Managing director of Brazilian subsidiary retires

At the end of this year, Flavio Lufchitz, Managing Director of Schattdecor do Brasil, will retire. From January 2022, the Brazilian site will be jointly managed by Sandra Mohr Ludwig (Sales, Design, Marketing and Communication), Gerson Aldo de Souza (Production and Engineering) and Carla Mendes (Finance, Human Resources and Administration).

“With Flavio Lufchitz, we are saying goodbye to an experienced Schattdecor and industry man in retirement,” said Roland Auer, CEO of Schattdecor AG. “He has contributed to our success in the Latin American market and successfully accompanied our positive development on site. Today, we proudly look at two state-of-the-art, progressive locations, which, thanks to the new management, are well prepared for the future. We are losing a colleague of many years, but have gained a loyal friend in Flavio. We wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.”

Lufchitz spent much of his more than 35-year national and international career in the decor paper industry. After serving as director of production and engineering, he assumed overall management of Schattdecor do Brasil in 2017. In addition to increasing production capacity in printed décor papers and acquiring and integrating and modernizing the impregnation plant, his greatest achievements as managing director at Schattdecor include implementing growth plans in Latin America. He focused on participative management based on the corporate philosophy and continuous progress oriented towards the customer. Thanks to numerous sustainable investments by Flavio Lufchitz, the site is well prepared for the future when the new management takes over.

The woodworking industry is fine-tuning “Izy”.

Increasing automation in production entails one thing: The complexity of connecting machines to each other or to higher-level software solutions such as ERP systems or production management systems is growing exponentially. For the user, the whole thing is increasingly becoming an unsolvable task – or one for which a lot of money has to be invested. For new projects, the user, machine manufacturer and software producer often sit together weeks in advance to develop a functional solution.

In 2018, there was an initial push in the woodworking sector to remedy this situation: The OPC UA project was initiated. The aim here is to define uniform interfaces across manufacturers. In the end, machines from different manufacturers can be integrated “plug and play” into a machine park and still directly use all the digital possibilities of the new technologies. This project quickly spread far and wide and ultimately became a European project in which major Italian manufacturers and the umbrella organizations Acimall and Eumabois also got involved.

Now the industry is one step further. With OPC UA, not only is a European standard being worked on, but also a special Woodworking Companion Specification. The machine manufacturers Biesse, Bürkle, Homag, Ima Schelling, SCM, Weber and Weinig have joined forces for this. Put simply: OPC UA describes the grammar, the Woodworking Companion Specification is then the language with which machines in the woodworking industry communicate with each other. For this “language”, a total of 11 requirements were determined by the project partners, which are now being standardized accordingly. In order to move forward as quickly as possible, the first four requirements (identification of machines from different manufacturers, overview of machine status, overview of machine messages, and provision of information for KPI calculations) have been started and already implemented. The whole thing is called “Izy” and even the name already conveys the claim to simplify things.

During the “Ligna.Innovation Network” at the end of September, the project partners provided comprehensive information about “Izy” for the first time. The first version, i.e. “Izy 1.0”, an open software, is meanwhile available via the OPC UA Foundation or also the VDMA. Of course, the work of the European working group continues, after all, the seven other defined requirements still have to be implemented. In addition, there is now also cooperation with Umati, a community of the mechanical and plant engineering industry and its customers for the dissemination and use of open interface standards based on OPC UA. Umati has so far been active primarily in the metalworking sector – and is delighted to be joining forces with the woodworking industry. Because in the end, only one thing counts: that customers have it as easy as possible when installing new machines. And the more industries that work on the same basis, the more likely it is that woodworking machines will be up and running and digitally connected in production just as quickly as robots or machine tools, for example.

4-week “Biesse Inside” has started

It all started on October 11: in Pesaro, the Biesse Group opened its doors to customers and interested parties for another “Biesse Inside”. But not only for 3 or 4 days, as it was usual in the last years. But rather a whole four weeks until November 5. “We just have to act as the situation allows,” explains Raphaël Prati, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer of Biesse Group. Federico Broccoli, Chief Commercial and Subsidiaries Officer, adds, “In the past, we were happy to report that many hundreds of visitors were at our plant within a short period of time. Today, we have to ‘equalize’ the visitor groups, and that’s why we’re stretching our fall show to a total of four weeks.” But of course, every change also offers opportunities. “It all has its advantages,” says Broccoli. “We’re now able to cater to each individual visitor and their needs much more intensively than we used to then.” And there is a clear trend: international customers are making very strong use of the digital offers that are increasingly available during “Biesse Inside”, while there is a noticeable interest from Northern European visitors to also experience machine technologies “live” again.

Basically, the Biesse Group is very satisfied on the road. “We will be able to follow up on the record figures we had in 2018 and 2019 with the 2021 financial year,” Broccoli reported at a digital press conference. “This is already shown by the course of the first half of the year: we are recording significantly more orders than in the same period of 2019, a double-digit increase. And almost twice as many incoming orders as in the first half of 2020. These are really very good figures.”

As part of “Biesse Inside” 2021, new machines and solutions for the wood, glass and stone sectors will be on display through November. Broccoli reveals, “we haven’t had any downtime in our R&D department, of course. Sometimes it feels like that of renowned telephone providers: We present the latest generation and ingenious new features.”

Expands portfolio in the glass processing sector

The Biesse Group, a company listed on the STAR segment of the Milan Stock Exchange that designs, manufactures and markets systems and machinery for the processing of wood, glass, stone, metal, plastics and composites, signed an agreement the day before yesterday to acquire 100 percent of the shares in Forvet Costruzione Macchine Speciali S.p.A., a manufacturer of specialized automated machinery for glass processing based in Volvera, near Turin. The value of the transaction amounts to approximately 41 million euros and will be settled mainly in cash during the current fiscal year.

This transaction is in line with the Biesse Group’s growth strategy and will significantly expand the product portfolio of glass processing machinery. Biesse has been present in this field since the mid-1980s with “Intermac” brand technologies. Thanks to the introduction of its own technologies by Forvet S.p.A., the Group is strengthening its offer in the upper segment of the market by providing highly automated, customized machines and systems that are unique in this sector. “This acquisition is great, Forvet is on the market with great solutions and we are thus expanding our offer in the glass sector very successfully along the complete process chain,” Federico Broccoli, Chief Commercial and Subsidiaries Officer underlined during a digital press conference.

“This is a strategic acquisition that allows us to complete the range of glass processing machines with industrial solutions that complement and integrate perfectly with our technologies. This allows us to offer our technologically advanced customers modular lines and automated systems that guarantee a high level of productivity and flexibility,” commented Roberto Selci, CEO of the Biesse Group.

Founded in 1990, Forvet S.p.A. is known in the market for the production of automated lines that incorporate a high level of know-how and are capable of producing a complete product in a small space, including loading and unloading operations and intralogistics that can still be customized according to the customer’s requirements.

Acceptance in record time at Dongwha

The Korean wood-based panel producer Dongwha is “very satisfied” with its new Siempelkamp plant after a record-breaking ramp-up curve. Only six weeks after the first board was produced, the plant was accepted by the customer – and it is already producing with more than 20% above the output guaranteed in the contract. The plant is the first in Vietnam to process acacia, a challenging raw material in the production process.

Dongwha operates a total of three wood-based panel plants made by Siempelkamp in Vietnam, all designed for the production of MDF. While two of them were built in the south of Vietnam in the greater Saigon area together with the Vietnam Rubber Group (VRG), the new plant in Hanoi is the first direct investment of the Korean company in Vietnam. It is the first plant in Vietnam ever to be targeted at the special raw material resources in the north of Vietnam.

In the greater Hanoi area, the acacia tree species is widespread. It improves soil quality, filters pollutants and enriches the soil with nitrogen. The characteristics of acacia – durable, resistant, robust and yet flexible – make it attractive for the furniture industry. However, due to its demanding fiber geometry, this tree species presents challenges to panel producers. High press speeds and capacities at have not been possible until now due to the high dust content of the fibers.

Specialized in press concepts for the processing of challenging raw materials, Siempelkamp also mastered this project. After initial press operations with pine wood, the following ramp up phases with the raw material acacia led to results that exceeded all expectations.

“Neo” press inlet: special infeed geometry opens up numerous advantages The special infeed geometry of the “Contiroll” press makes the decisive difference when processing acacia: The “Neo” press infeed with extended, highly flexible heating plate facilitates the deaeration of the mat in the press infeed and effectively prevents blowouts and steel belt damage even at high production speeds. This results in higher operational reliability of the line, higher line availability and significantly increased capacity of the overall line. Particularly in thin board production, this results in a significantly increased production output compared to the technical solutions available on the market to date. Thus, the economical production of thin boards as well as the operation of very long presses with high pressing speeds with the raw material acacia is possible.

The “Neo” press infeed is the consistent further development of the proven, highly flexible infeed of the Siempelkamp “Contiroll”. Introduced in the 1990s, this technology enables stable press speeds of up to 2,000 mm/sec. today. With the new, extended infeed Siempelkamp meets the current challenges of its customers: The processing of short-fiber wood with a high dust content and of annual plants becomes just as manageable as the production based on new gluing-blending systems with low tack.

“Our team pulled through a series of holidays between Christmas and Chinese New Year to be able to stay on schedule. Parts of the commissioning were also carried out in remote mode to save valuable time. In close cooperation with the highly committed customer team, we were thus able to beat the original first board deadline by several days. The subsequent ramp-up curve set a new standard in the established cooperation between Siempelkamp and Dongwha: After only six weeks of operation we were able to exceed the contractually guaranteed capacity by more than 20% and hand over the plant to the customer,” says Holger Jansen, project manager at Siempelkamp.

The new MDF plant sets benchmarks not only as the first press for a special raw material but also with its length. The continuous press “Contiroll” in the 8′ x 47.1 m format also secures Dongwha the title “longest MDF press in Asia” for the second time – both supplied by Siempelkamp.

Acquires 50 percent stake in Fine Decor

Schattdecor is expanding its portfolio with a 50 percent stake in Fine Decor. Through the merger, the companies are focusing on the symbiosis of long-standing decor and design expertise and an innovative, sustainable substrate in the form of recycled PET film. “We are joining forces to offer the industry a unique, promising and sustainable product that provides innovative solutions for demanding customer needs,” says the management of both companies.

Fine Decor produces and finishes sustainable PET-based uni-lacquer laminate surfaces for the kitchen and furniture industry. In doing so, the decorative film manufacturer has developed its own technology with a manufacturing cycle that makes it possible to produce a plain or decor-printed furniture surface from the recycled material. Even scrap is recycled back into the company’s own manufacturing process and fully processed. The sustainable surface is elastic and moisture-resistant and, due to its composition, offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional thermoforming sheets.

Schattdecor is thus expanding its product portfolio in the field of finished surfaces and will in future also be able to print and finish PET-based films. The first joint product will be marketed by both companies under the name “Fineflex”.

On the side of the film manufacturer Fine Decor, there is euphoria regarding the next planned joint steps and future projects. Hasan Sekmann, founder of Fine Decor: “It is an enrichment for us to have a partner like Schattdecor at our side who, like us, has a vision of growth, progress and innovative developments with sustainable added value. With our European production, we ensure stable supply chains for our customers and, thanks to this local added value, we are a reliable partner for the furniture industry. Together we can shape the future. Literally, because this is where design expertise, cutting-edge technologies and inventiveness come together, coupled with passion, motivation and a network built up over the years.”

“Through our partnership with Fine Decor, we continue to invest in our mission ‘One Source. Unlimited Solutions,'” adds Roland Auer, CEO of Schattdecor AG. “We offer contemporary, innovative solutions ‘made in Germany’ and strengthen each other with our expertise and existing network. In Fine Decor, we have found a partner who shares our passion for people and products and our vision of the future.”

“This is exactly what is needed in the industry now,” said Claudia Küchen, board member for design and marketing. “With this symbiosis, we serve both: the need for press releases of first-class print quality, paired with hip design and a recycled substrate that meets the ever-increasing environmental demands in Europe. With our in-house developments and product innovations on environmentally friendly, formaldehyde-free thermoplastics, we have determined where the journey should go for us. Now we are taking the next step towards the future,” continues Küchen.

Frank Schumacher, Executive Vice President Sales, concludes: “The market is ready for new, sustainably produced surfaces. The search for alternative substrates to the predominantly paper-based decor business has been occupying us at Schattdecor for some time. With Hasan Sekmann and his team at Fine Decor, we have now found the perfect partner to implement our product strategy.”

The film manufacturer Fine Decor was founded in 2004 and is one of the leading companies in its industry in the field of paint laminates. The company now has international customers from over 20 countries worldwide.
