Mobile robots revolutionize Industry

Robot mobility is booming worldwide: Unit sales of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) in the logistics sector e.g. will increase by 31% between 2020 and 2023 annually. At the same time, the use of AMRs in public environments will also go up rapidly – IFR predicts unit sales will grow by 40% per year worldwide.

How mobility is reshaping robotics and why this is a game-changing revolution has been researched by the International Federations of Robotics and published in the new paper “A Mobile Revolution”.

“Mobile robots have traditionally operated in industrial settings to transport parts throughout the factory or feed machines,” says Milton Guerry, President of the International Federation of Robotics. “Today, AMRs also work in applications where contact with the general public is intended. They provide information to shoppers, deliver room service orders in hotels or support police officers by patrolling city areas. IFR´s mobile revolution paper gives an overview of the main use cases for mobile robots and their most significant impacts.”

While researchers have worked on technologies for autonomous mobility since the 1940s, autonomous mobile robots have only become commercially viable over the last decade. This is primarily due to the availability of far more powerful and cheaper computing power. This has led to rapid developments in sensor, vision and analytics technologies which enable robots to connect in real-time to their environment. Today, “Autonomous Mobile Robots” show double digit growth. AMRs navigate and perform functions autonomously in industrial and service sectors and pave the way for mobile robot adoption around the world.

“Mobile robotics is a dynamic field of development and we expect exciting advances over the next decade,” says Milton Guerry. These advances will take place in both hardware and software. Mobile robots will become lighter and more flexible. AMRs and service robots will be able to navigate in a range of indoor and outdoor environments more easily as advances in sensors and software algorithms mean that navigation and vision become more and more precise.

Live digital event on September 9.

SCM remains on track with live digital events to bring the Group’s new products to all customers worldwide – regardless of whether there are travel restrictions somewhere or other measures to combat the Corona pandemic. On September 9, the focus will be on “Superfici” machines. So it’s all about environmentally friendly and innovative surface technologies. The “Superfici Live Experience” starts at 9 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m., and in parallel with the digital events in six languages, a personal visit to the “Superfici Technology Center” in Villasanta (Monza) is also possible throughout the 36th calendar week by appointment.

Many individual presentations of the latest trends in painting are planned. This starts with sanding and extends to the most impressive effects that can be produced with new technologies on a wide variety of materials. In addition to Italian, English and German, customers can follow the demonstrations in French, Russian and Chinese.

The focus of the “Superfici Live Experience” will be, for example, on the new “Compact XL” injection molding machine of the latest generation with high-quality features. The panels painted with the “Compact XL” are subsequently further processed with the innovative excimer UV technology “Excimatt”. This ensures an exceptional super-matt finish, a silky-soft feel and unparalleled surface durability, as no matting agents are required in the product itself.

“Excimatt” ensures a mechanical microtexture of the applied coating layer. In this way, it is possible to replace the matting achieved by chemical additives, which usually reduces the scratch resistance of the topcoat layer.

The application of “Excimatt” is possible both in roller and curtain coating lines for the painting of flat surfaces, and in spraying lines for the surface treatment of shaped panels and edges.

Gloria Valtorta, Superfici business unit manager, explains: “Superfici has always been the surface specialist of SCM Group. Our mission is to meet the latest requirements of the painting market with state-of-the-art technologies. This involves both stand-alone solutions and solutions to be integrated into customer-specific systems. Definitely a great challenge, because we are talking about the first appearance, of a piece of furniture, a door or a window. Through continuous investment in research and development and the know-how of our experts in close cooperation with the other surface finishing technologies from SCM, we are always designing tailor-made solutions – much of which can be experienced at our digital event in September.”

“IMM Cologne” 365 is forging the path into the future
In times of upheaval, trade fairs feel both a longing for the familiar and a desire for improvement and change. This conflict is an enormous opportunity for “IMM Cologne”. It is a chance to combine the traditional design of a trade fair with visionary ideas, to innovatively blend the best of both worlds and thereby create an entirely new trade fair experience that nevertheless feels familiar. “A trade fair has to evolve with the market. “Go” for ZAO Murom’s greenfield project

First board on November 26th, 2020, start of three-shift operation in March 2021 – now the next milestone has been reached: the benchmark OSB plant of the Russian wood-based materials producer ZAO Murom was accepted in July – a success not least in view of the challenging circumstances.

The new OSB line was built as a greenfield project at the site of ZAO Murom in the Vladimir region. The core piece is a “Contiroll” Generation 9 in the 8.5′ x 30.4 m format. The complete plant includes the combined competence of the Siempelkamp Group: Pallmann and CMC as front-end specialists within the Group contributed the raw material preparation as well as the screening, gluing and forming technology. The energy plant and drum dryer were supplied by Büttner, and Sicoplan was responsible for the engineering. Also included are Siempelkamp’s new developments for OSB production which have already proven their positive characteristics in plant performance: the press heating system, a release agent application device for pMDI use, and the “strand catchers”.

In the middle of the pandemic, the first OSB was produced on the complete plant made by Siempelkamp at the end of November 2020. The way was thus paved for the further start-up – despite the extreme winter period with permanent low temperatures of below -30°C and heavy snowfalls. The innovative OSB line with an annual capacity of more than 280,000 m3 enables Murom to use diverse raw material assortments, including waste from plywood production, another focus of the plant investor.

The plant’s machinery and components enable the production of a high-quality wood-based product that can be sold worldwide and offers clear competitive advantages. This product is already meeting with great approval in the customer’s markets. The plant now also produces very thin OSB with a board thickness of 6.0 mm – a unique selling point for ZAO Murom in Russia.

“We are pleased with the successfully completed acceptance process, which provides ZAO Murom with another strong foundation for wood processing and will influence new investments in the wood-based materials sector in the future,” says Konstantin Putintsev, General Director OOO Siempelkamp (Russia).
