Continuously grows its patent portfolio on digital structure

Unilin Technologies is happy to announce that The European Patent Office will grant a new European Patent on digital structuring technologies. The specific patent EP 3 381 710 will further extend Unilin Technologies’ patent portfolio on “digital structure technologies” for panels.

“Unilin Technologies already described and filed patent protection for digital structuring technologies in 2009”, states Jasmine Geerinckx, Business Development Manager at Unilin Technologies. “Such patents protect printing technologies that can produce 3D structure on the surface of panels. The main method for realizing the structured layer comprises at least two steps, namely, a first step, in which a synthetic material layer is provided on the substrate, and a second subsequent step, in which a relief or structure is produced on the surface. Such a structure is achieved by using a digitally-printed, lacquer-repelling agent or a selective mask that protects the underlying, synthetic material during a mechanical removal treatment.”

This patent portfolio is commercialized under the name “Digitouch”. It is a complete digital solution for printing life-like 3D textures directly onto boards. “Digitouch” adds that real look and feel.

Unilin Technologies has worldwide patent protection on these digital structure technologies with more than 90 patents and 11 applications and is in extensive negotiations with many of its partners to license out the patent portfolio.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary

For Italian machine builder Dalso, based in Schio, the year 2021 is a very special one: 20 years ago, the company specialized in the design and construction of industrial automation systems for woodworking, overcoming numerous challenges and repeatedly pushing forward with innovative automation projects. Apart from this milestone, Dalso also sees the current year as an important starting point for new developments.

The company, based in Schio in the province of Vicenza, was born from the experience of its founder Lucio Dal Soglio and from the culture of the spirit of sacrifice: a vision that assumes that every effort is necessary to ensure a better result and continuous improvement of the company and its products.

Company founder Lucio Dal Soglio explains: “Dalso was born with the vision that every effort contributes to moving the company forward, offering better products and achieving an excellent result”. Twenty years of activity as a machine producer in the woodworking sector is only the first milestone we have reached. I have accumulated more than thirty years of experience in the automation industry from the beginning of my career until I became the owner and commercial director of a company. It has often been a combination of dedication and sacrifice to turn a ‘startup’ into a solid company, with consistent growth in sales, employees, rooms, business units, customers and markets.

However, the key factor in recent years has been the high level of customer satisfaction. It led to us being able to move to our current location in 2016, which offers plenty of space at around 4,000 square meters. The number of employees has increased once again and we have become more industrially oriented. In addition, this year we renewed our ISO 9001 certification, which officially underlines the quality of our work and end products – which is ultimately an achievement of our employees. And we see the past 20 years as a new starting point, fueling enthusiasm throughout the company to deliver future projects with the same commitment and passion.”

A reflection of this are the two latest automation lines currently being projected: A saw infeed for the production of wood profiles. The whole thing is designed for panel packs and up to five loading stations, with the line operating completely autonomously. The second line automates process steps of a parquet production.

Dalso is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the knowledge that it will not be thwarted by any adversity – not even by a pandemic, as has happened in the last 1.5 years. Both in the development of customer concepts and ultimately in the organizational and practical implementation of these, new paths are always taken to create the best possible solutions.

Around 450 exhibitors at the presence fair in Frankfurt

After almost two years of almost exclusively digital encounters, the time has finally come again: the “Formnext” will take place again as a face-to-face event from 16 – 19.11.2021 in Frankfurt.

“In discussions with the AM community over the past few years, we have once again become aware of the importance of ‘Formnext’. The trade show has a vibrancy and innovative power that are unbeatable. Knowing that with the support of the entire community we can once again create such a creative space where people can exchange ideas in person, have productive conversations over a cup of coffee, touch products and discuss their innovations is just wonderful,” said a delighted Sascha F. Wenzler, Vice President Formnext of Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH.

“Formnext” promises a wide range of highlights. These include top-class lectures by industry experts, presentations from the partner country Italy, as well as innovations in the “Purmundus Challenge” and the start-up “Challenge Pitch-Next” event. Furthermore, the TCT Conference and Stage as well as the special shows of VDMA AG AM and BE-AM (Built Environment) are to be highlighted. ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) is also organizing for the first time an international standards workshop the day before the event.

Major companies in the industry will also be present at the show this year. Some 450 exhibitors (55% from abroad) have already registered, including 3D Systems, Additive Industries, Addup, Arburg, Autodesk, BigRep, DMG Mori, Dyndrite, EOS, ExOne, Farsoon, Formlabs, GE, Hexagon, HP, Keyence, Markforged, Materialise, Meltio, Nexa 3D, Prima Industrie, Renishaw, Sandvik, Siemens, Stratasys, Trumpf, Voxeljet and XJet.

Of course, the health and safety of all participants is paramount. Therefore, the protection and hygiene concept developed last year is continuously adapted to the pandemic situation and legal requirements, as the organizer announces on its website. Wider aisles in the halls and additional communication and waiting areas in higher-traffic zones of the show will help maintain the necessary safety distances. A 3G concept will be introduced (Vaccinated, Convalesced, Tested).

Two weeks later, the physical event from Nov. 30 – Dec. 01, 2021, will be complemented by “Formnext Digital Days.” Given the rapid growth of the AM community and the demand for 3D printed products across all sectors of the industry, allowing those still affected by travel restrictions to participate digitally in the exchange of ideas. Supplies MDF plant including Turkey’s largest continuous wood-based panel press to Starwood

Starwood has commissioned Dieffenbacher to supply an MDF line in İnegöl, Turkey, that will include a 9-ft wide by 63.5-meter long CPS+ press, the largest continuous wood-based panel press in Turkey. Just two years ago, Starwood signed the acceptance of its new Dieffenbacher particleboard line, one month ahead of the contractually agreed upon date.

“Collaboration is the key,” said Starwood CEO Hüseyin Yildiz at the contract negotiations in İnegöl in July. “That’s the motto that made our particleboard project so successful two years ago, and I trust Dieffenbacher that it will be the same for our new MDF line.” Following the engineering phase, installation is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2022. The first board is to be produced toward the end of the same year. “I strongly believe in the power of teamwork with Dieffenbacher. It wouldn’t surprise me if we manage to be a few weeks ahead of schedule again,” Hüseyin Yildiz added.

In addition to Turkey’s largest continuous wood-based panel press, Dieffenbacher will supply the dryer, sifter and glue preparation technology as well as the forming station and forming line. Downstream of the press, Dieffenbacher will deliver the press emission control system, raw board handling, STS storage system and the sanding line. Dieffenbacher is also responsible for the plant electrics and automation.

An annual saving of 32 tonnes of CO2 thanks to solar energy

Sustainability and carbon reduction are corporate responsibility of Ninkaplast GmbH (Bad Salzuflen; Germany). Following wide ranging investment in 2020 towards a sustainability strategy, including three new highly efficient injection moulding machines, further steps are being taken to significantly reduce the company’s carbon footprint in the form of 302 linked solar panels with a total capacity of 99,660 watts.

The flat-roof system on the factory roof at national road 239 is, as is customary today, orientated in an east/west direction. Each of the 302 panels generates 330 watts. With average sunlight this equates to 80,000 kWh of electricity per year, saving approximately 32 tons of CO2 per year.

The self-generated electricity flows into the company via two 40 kW inverters and replaces part of the external supply. At the weekend, in comparison, while Ninka production is generally quiet, the electricity generated is fed into the public power-grid. Managing Director, Klaus H. Wulf referred to this 70,000 euro investment „We are quite proud to see that we are on the way towards to reaching our long-term goal of being carbon-neutral. It is often overlooked however, that we, like others, have to pay an EEG (German Renewable Energies Act) surcharge for the self-generated renewable energy that we create.”

„MEM-Industrial“ 2021

“Tecno Mueble Internacional” takes place as a presence fair

As originally planned, “MEM Industrial-Tecno Mueble Internacional” will be held as a presence event at Expo Guadalajara from August 18 to 21, 2021. This has been confirmed by the organizing committee of “MEM Industrial-Tecno Mueble Internacional” (MEM-TMI), consisting of Hannover Fairs México and the Association of Furniture Manufacturers of Jalisco (Afamjal), together with the local authorities and Expo Guadalajara. Of course, there will be a strict safety and hygiene protocol for all visitors and participants.

According to Azul Ogazón, director of “MEM-TMI”, “the government of the State of Jalisco has supported the economic activities at Expo Guadalajara, on condition that events like ours implement a series of strict measures to protect the health and well-being of all participants. Over the past year, the Organizing Committee of ,MEM-TMI’ and Expo Guadalajara have been working together on health measures and protocols that meet the highest international standards, as well as new generation technologies that will allow us to protect the health of our visitors and exhibitors. Hannover Fairs México, Afamjal and Expo Guadalajara would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to contribute to the economic reactivation of the sector and the creation of business opportunities for the wood and furniture industry from August 18 to 21.”

Afamjal President Teresa Calderón Durán pointed out that the furniture sector is of great importance to the country in general and to Jalisco in particular, as it employs around 25,000 people and contributes significantly to the local economy. “Therefore, it is necessary to complement the furniture production chain with world-class machinery and production equipment, without forgetting the forestry sector, which also makes a significant contribution to the Mexican economy.”

“The new times,” added Calderón Durán, “call for new technologies and digitalization to serve a market that increasingly demands innovative products that can be delivered almost immediately. That’s why the furniture industry needs suppliers who can keep up with advances in the sector.”

New subsidiary in Mexico

The Rheinau-based automation specialist is strengthening its activities in Central America: from August 2021, Zimmer Group will be represented by its own subsidiary in Querétaro, Mexico, thus continuing on its growth path. In addition to its headquarters in Rheinau, the company now has 13 of its own locations worldwide.

The decision to establish its own branch in Mexico is an important part of the Zimmer Group’s global expansion strategy: “In the past, the Mexican market was successfully developed by a local dealer. Strong demand and the desire of our customers prompted us a few years ago to set up our first own sales team through our then US branch. Mexico is one of our key markets. To further strengthen our local market presence, we have now founded our own company – Zimmer Automation S. de R.L. de C.V. – in Querétaro,” explains Vincent Zimmer, the new Managing Director of the Mexican branch.

Since Zimmer Group customers will continue to be supplied directly from Germany, the Mexico headquarters will focus primarily on sales, consulting and after-sales. “Only locally can we provide customers in a market as important to us as Mexico with the kind of intensive support they are used to from the ‘Know-How Factory’,” Vincent Zimmer concludes.

As the son of the company’s founder Günther Zimmer, Vincent Zimmer was involved in his own company from an early age. Before the economist was appointed managing director this year, he was able to gain some experience in an internationally renowned mechanical engineering company. Most recently, he took the opportunity to gain further knowledge in international sales and marketing as assistant to the Zimmer Group management – namely as “Business Development Manager” in the USA. In addition to his role as Managing Director for Mexico, Vincent Zimmer will continue to work as Business Development Manager in the USA, where he will selectively develop and support key account customers.

The Zimmer Group, which was founded by the two brothers Günther and Martin Zimmer more than 40 years ago in a converted cowshed in Rheinau, is an owner-managed family business that attaches great importance to a future-proof company succession in family hands. Thus, a large part of the offspring of the two company founders is already employed in the company, and seven of the ten children of the two partners are already working in the Zimmer Group in very different areas. The goal is to lead the family business step by step into the so-called “next generation” in a joint process over the coming years. With Vincent Zimmer, another step in this direction has now been taken.
