Invests locally and globally in locations

Started a little more than 40 years ago in Rheinau, Baden, the Zimmer Group is now, by its own account, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of automation, machine and furniture damping components. In addition, the Zimmer Group is an important and valued partner for system solutions for numerous well-known national and international companies in the fields of mechanical and plant engineering, as well as the aviation and automotive industries.

Despite the current partly very difficult general conditions, the Zimmer Group, which currently employs more than 1,260 people at 13 locations worldwide, has been able to maintain its expansion course, which has been ongoing for years. “The strong increase in demand worldwide in almost all product areas makes a comprehensive and global expansion strategy necessary for the coming years in order to continue to exploit the enormous potential in Europe, Asia and America as quickly as possible,” said Achim Gauss, Managing Director Technology and Sales.

“In Germany, our production site, we are currently planning to expand our capacity by a further 5,000 square meters or so so that we can meet the steadily increasing demand, especially from Asia, but also from America and parts of Europe. In addition, the Zimmer Group currently has around 40 new jobs in the tendering process, for the Rheinau site alone,” says Günther Zimmer, owner and managing director.

“The investments made in R&D in recent years have expanded our product portfolio enormously. Highly innovative products have been created and are now very well accepted by the market worldwide,” Martin Zimmer, owner and managing director continues. “China has become our number 1 growth market in recent years and we are literally bursting at the seams in our Shanghai office. For this reason, a new building is now also being planned in China, although it will not be built in the metropolis of Shanghai, but 250 kilometers away in Jintan (Jiangsu Province),” explains Achim Gauss.

The location decision came apart from the good surrounding field conditions not least by the cross-linking of the region Jintan with the homeland region of the Zimmer Group (Ortenau) and the settlement of German enterprises also from this region. In addition to close cooperation between the Jintan region and the Ortenau Economic Region Association (WRO) and good networking with the university in Offenburg, there is a broad university landscape in Jintan, including in mechanical engineering, as well as a German-speaking school.

A building of its own has now become urgently necessary, since with increasing sales, fast local service is also becoming more and more of a customer requirement. In order to further develop the market in China, but also to competitively implement customer requirements, such as customer-specific applications or professional project management for the local market, more space, better infrastructure and qualified local personnel are needed.

India is also becoming increasingly important for the Zimmer Group. “For our sales office there, we will be able to present a plan for expansion in the coming year,” Achim Gauss adds.

In order to make even better use of the market opportunities in America, the company had already established its own sales office in Querétaro, Mexico, in August of this year and is planning to do the same for Canada in the foreseeable future. In the USA, the Zimmer Group has been in possession of its own company building for some time and is primarily expanding its sales and service staff there. With a well thought-out expansion plan, Zimmer Group not only wants to tap into new customers and markets, but also make better use of the synergies among the respective locations worldwide. “In this way, we will better position ourselves in a globalized world and create lasting growth opportunities for the Group through improved competitiveness. To achieve this, it is necessary to expand existing branches and enhance their capabilities, but also to establish new branches in countries that offer us opportunities for further development in the near future. The whole project will also be secured in the long term by an orderly transition process to the next generation,” concludes Martin Zimmer.

Günther and Martin Zimmer have a total of ten children, five of whom are already involved in the group of companies.

New association website

Eumabois, the European association of woodworking machinery and tools manufacturers, is pleased to announce that its website, wwww.eumabois.com, has gone live with an updated design and new features.

The homepage provides users with all the information and updates about the association and its member associations, coupled with a modern user experience. The primary goal of this redesign was to create a higher quality and fully responsive communication platform that is easily accessible from all devices.

Jürgen Köppel, President of Eumabois, commented, “The launch of the new Eumabois website is a very important step for us to facilitate and improve our information and communication offering to all Eumabois stakeholders. At this point, I would like to thank Dr. Goi for implementing the project in such a professional way.”

The website, dedicated to the national associations, their member companies and the exhibition organizers supported by Eumabois worldwide, has been brought to a new level not only visually but also in terms of content. In addition to the most important projects at European level, there is also the latest news from the Eumabois exhibition network. Social media LinkedIn and Twitter can be used to keep up to date with the latest industry announcements.

Eumabois plans to continue its efforts to expand its web content and invites everyone to try out the new website. The official launch of the digital platform took place during the 2021 Annual General Meeting in Vienna, in the presence of the national associations.

Experience innovations live again at last

New start after corona-related break: From 21 to 24 June 2022, “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” will once again bring the technical textiles and textile processing industry together physically in Frankfurt am Main. These exhibiting companies and topics await the trade visitors:inside.

About eight months before the first Frankfurt edition of “Techtextil”, leading international trade fair for technical textiles and nonwovens, and “Texprocess”, leading international trade fair for the processing of textile and flexible materials, around 900 exhibitors, including many organizers of joint stands, have registered for both events.

The number of registrations for “Techtextil” is currently around 85 percent of the previous event at the same time. To date, “Texprocess” has recorded around 70 percent of the registration level of the previous event.

“There is renewed movement in the sector and the need to exchange information about new developments and experience innovations live is enormous – whether national or international. Companies have faced unprecedented challenges in the last year and a half-plus of the pandemic. Many companies have completely repositioned themselves and at the same time launched innovations. They now want to exchange ideas about this with an international audience,” said Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies, at Messe Frankfurt.

“In June 2022, ,Techtextil’ and ,Texprocess’ will allow us to look ahead. Pandemic dislocations and a commitment to sustainability are putting even more focus on flexible, digitally automated and sustainable production structures. Among other things, these will also be more regional than before,” said Elgar Straub, Managing Director, VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies. “Adapted technological solutions exist and are increasingly in demand. The high registration numbers show the need for exchange.”

Both trade fairs take place as hybrid events and, in addition to the physical trade fair offering with supporting program, include numerous additional digital offerings for exhibitors and visitors.

Whether it’s the UN Decade of Action, which envisions the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals worldwide by 2030, the European Commission’s Green Deal, which aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, or the German government’s recently passed Due Diligence Act (“Supply Chain Act”), which makes companies liable for human rights violations in their supply chains: Sustainability is a key issue that also affects the textile and fashion industry, and one to which the sector can contribute a great deal due to its size and its impact on people and nature.

With “Sustainability@Techtextil” and “Sustainability@Texprocess”, both leading trade fairs in June 2022 will focus on sustainability approaches of the exhibiting companies and institutions. Expert discussions complement the topic. Once again, the “Techtextil” and “Texprocess Innovation Awards” will also honor outstanding achievements in sustainability in the industry in a separate category.

Dynamic and diverse: the textile industry is on the move and textile startups are active in numerous future areas such as 3D design, blockchain, e-commerce or sustainability. For the first time, “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” will present international startups for technical textiles and textile processing in a separate area. The area complements the tried-and-tested “Young Innovative Companies from Germany” area, which is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and features young companies based in Germany that have been on the market for a maximum of ten years.

Young textile talents will also be the focus of the “Texprocess” Campus, where colleges and universities will be presenting themselves.

From cotton cultivation and water-saving dyeing processes to finishing: as timeless as denim fashion is, as numerous are the myths and facts surrounding its sustainability, but also as diverse are the innovations in the sector. With the Denim Future Factory (DFF), “Texprocess” 2022 will devote a thematic focus to the denim industry.

With the “Techtextil” and Texprocess Forums, visitors to both trade fairs will gain highly topical and multifaceted insights into a wide range of industry topics on all days of the fair.

Outstanding new and further developments in technical textiles, nonwovens and functional apparel textiles, as well as technologies and processes for processing textiles and flexible materials, will again be honored in 2022 with the “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” Innovation Awards.

With the 2022 edition, “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” will use the West Exhibition Centre of Messe Frankfurt for the first time, with Halls 8, 9, 11 and 12. With regard to the hygiene regulations applicable in each case, Messe Frankfurt is in close contact with the relevant authorities in order to ensure the best possible protection of exhibitors and visitors at all times.

With the shift to 2022, both trade fairs will also change their trade fair rhythm for the coming edition and permanently switch to even-numbered years. A new trade fair date has also already been set for 2024, from April 23 to 26.

Registrations for “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” are still possible.

Launches Project to boost the adoption of responsible robotics in Europe

Robotics4EU is the European Commission’s answer to the unprecedented importance of robotics in modern economy.

Launched officially in January 2021 under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, Robotics4EU aims to take concrete steps to ensure a more widespread adoption of (AI-based) robots in the EU, particularly in the areas of Healthcare, Inspection and Maintenance of Infrastructure, Agri-Food, and Agile Production.

The project’s goal also includes raising awareness about non-technological aspects of robotics, such as ethics, legal, socioeconomic, data, privacy and gender issues. To do so, it will gather a responsible robotics community, with representatives from companies and academia in the areas mentioned above, citizens, policy and decision-makers, and it will organise community-building and co-creation events while advocating for the cause of responsible robotics.

In the first few months of the project, a series of interviews and online surveys were conducted in order to gain insight from stakeholders and members of the robotics community in topics such as the deployment of robotics, current practices, shortcomings and other needs of the community. The issues pointed by the surveyed include labour force concerns, the consequences of robotics on overall human well-being, among others, and are available on the project’s website. This report also includes information regarding good practices from other projects, robotics community readiness and robots’ acceptability, cooperation between policy makers and the robotics community, among others.

During the month of October 2021, Robotics4EU will also promote a GlobalSay – consultation that will engage approximately 700 citizens from 12 countries in deliberations about the societal and ethical impacts of robotics.

A series of workshops starting in November 2021 and lasting until mid-2022 is also in the works. The goal is to broaden and empower the responsible robotics community and encourage the debate around cutting-edge issues and ideas for practical solutions that will support the responsible adoption of (AI-based) robotics. There will be a total of 20 workshops: four online and one presential for each of the projects’ areas (Healthcare, Inspection and Maintenance of Infrastructure, Agri-Food, and Agile Production).

Robotics4EU is a €3 million coordination and support action comprising 7 organisations from 6 European countries with expertise in several technological domains. For more information on the project and future activities, visit Robotics4EU website at https://www.robotics4eu.eu/.

First continuous OSB plant for Turkey

The Turkish wood-based panel producer Küpeliler Endustri AS placed orders for two new plants with Siempelkamp: Firstly, the first continuous OSB plant to be assembled in Turkey – secondly, a new particleboard plant. Siempelkamp is thus continuing its successful commitment to the Turkish market.

“Right place, right time, right project”: According to this concept Küpeliler Endustri AS is established in several business areas, among others in the cement, packaging, and wood-based panel industries. The latter receives new impetus from a premiere plant which the Turkish company, founded in 1981, recently ordered from Siempelkamp: the first continuous press for OSB in Turkey.

The scope of supply includes a ‘Contiroll’ in the format 4′ x 33.8 m, extendable to 45.4 m, which replaces an existing plant at the Kutahya location. The new Siempelkamp plant will support Küpeliler Endustri AS in increasing its board quality and implementing higher plant availability. With the brand “Westboard” Küpeliler demonstrates its many years of experience with OSB material, which is mainly used in the construction industry, e.g. for cladding. The company thus provides attractive alternatives to expensive plywood and serves the rapidly growing demand from the construction and packaging industries. The quality of the OSB panels is enhanced by the special surface finish, the “OSB-ContiFinish”.

The improved thickness tolerances and optimized mechanical properties achieved with the continuous press technology also have a positive effect compared with conventional cycle press system boards.

The second new order was placed by Küpeliler Endustri with its German partner for its particleboard division. It comprises a line with a ‘Contiroll’ in the format 7′ x 23.8 m, extendable to 28,8 m. This new investment replaces a single-level line at the Eskişehir site, which has been in production for 40 years. The particleboard division was established and continuously expanded back in the 1980s under the company name Suntasan, part of the Küpeliler Group since 2006. In Eskişehir, the company focuses not only on production but also on the tempering of the boards. “We are pleased to be able to support Küpeliler’s innovative strength with two plant concepts at the same time, especially since we can place a first in the Turkish market with the OSB plant,” says Ulrich Kaiser, Head of Sales Siempelkamp. The two orders represent currently 32 ‘Contiroll’ projects that Siempelkamp has realized with Turkish customers in 27 years. “Our reference list is a chronology of the continuous trust of Turkish wood-based material producers in our work,” Ulrich Kaiser summarizes.

A central success factor for the high demand in the Turkish market is not least Siempelkamp’s strong local presence according to the motto “globally active, locally present”: Since 2010 Siempelkamp has been operating an office in Istanbul which supports Turkish wood-based panel producers with first-class, trustworthy advice. Under the management of Faruk Şişci, eight employees are dedicated to projects in the area of new plants as well as the support of the Siempelkamp service portfolio. With this team on site, the installed base is continuously updated, for example, with extensive modernization and upgrade measures for hardware and software. As a proven partner of Siempelkamp, GIM Export is also an important link in the Turkish market: This cooperation has existed for more than 25 years, within the framework of which GIM-Export provides central services in the area of overall financing.

Successful new start despite Corona pandemic

The European umbrella organization for manufacturers of woodworking machinery and tools, Eumabois, held its annual General Assembly on November 5, 2021. After the 2020 General Assembly was held as the first “purely digital General Assembly” of Eumabois, the delegates and board members were even more looking forward to the face-to-face exchange in Vienna, where they were welcomed by the Austrian association FMTI.

The opening topic was the general outlook for the woodworking industry, which is experiencing a rapid and very positive upturn. The figures continue to point to sustainable growth despite the fact that the wood processing industry is also suffering from high material costs and a shortage of raw materials. Global demand remains high, demonstrating the good recovery of this economic sector in response to the crisis triggered by the Corona virus. Megatrends such as digitalization and industrial automation, as well as a growing demand for furniture and kitchens, reinforced by travel restrictions and the cocooning effect, are also providing tailwinds for the woodworking industry.

Looking at the Eumabois exhibition network in 2021, unfortunately most of the shows had to be cancelled. For 2022, however, a full exhibition calendar with two top trade fair events is possible again: the “Holz-Handwerk” in Nuremberg in March and the “Xylexpo” in Milan with a new date in October. The positive signals from the trade fair industry are an important step towards normality, which underlines the value and importance of face-to-face events.

The meeting in Vienna was also used to officially launch the revamped Eumabois website with completely new features and modern graphics. There was also important news on the part of technical projects: OPC-UA (Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture) was given the marketing name “IZY”, which together with the Companion Specification V1.0 was officially presented to the market during the “Ligna.Innovation Network” on September 27, 2021.

In conclusion, Jürgen Köppel expressed his sincere thanks to the host association FMTI and all national associations present. The president emphasized, “I am firmly convinced that one of the most important pillars for the growth of our industry is our common European approach.”

The next Eumabois General Assembly will be held in Krakow, Poland, on September 22-23, 2022.

New building in Japan

In December 2020, in the city of Ageo some 40 kilometres north of Tokyo, the ,Jichinsai’ was held for Vollmer Japan’s new building: This ceremonial ritual saw a Shintō priest bless the approx. 1700 square metre building site, upon which the new premises of Vollmer’s Japanese subsidiary were subsequently constructed in just eight months. Sake, salt and rice were also sprinkled in the corners of the offices and function rooms, as is the local tradition. In mid-September 2021, Vollmer threw a pre-opening party with partners and suppliers – the official opening is scheduled for early June 2022.

“We decided to build brand new premises in Japan, partly because our existing office space was too small, and partly because we want to demonstrate how important the Japanese market is for Vollmer. Now with some 1000 square metres of office space and floor space, we even have room for a dedicated showroom for our customers,” explains Carl Moser, Vollmer Branch Manager in Japan. “And at the same time, we are paving the way towards energy efficiency and sustainability, with solar panels spanning 250 square metres of the roof as well as plans for a charging station for electric cars.”

In the summer months, the solar panels cover the majority of the site’s power requirements. Another important element of the concept is the installation of three charging columns for electric cars from January 2022 and the procurement of plug-in hybrids for use as company cars. The new building gentle is not only designed with the environment in mind, but with the current workforce of 16 in mind too: As such, Vollmer has incorporated a little café for meetings and breaks, and given thought to other details such as height-adjustable desks for an ergonomic working environment. There are also two large meeting rooms that can be combined to make one large seminar room with space for 40 customers. There’s also an extensive storage facility for parts, where the most important spare parts are always in stock and can be dispatched to customers in next to no time.

The showroom features up to five sharpening machines and customers can watch live demonstrations and even have a go at machining some tools. At present, the showroom primarily features Vollmer machines that can be used to machine rotating cutting tools.

“We established Vollmer Japan more than 20 years ago, and with this new premises, we are well equipped to continue our success story in the land of the rising sun,” explains Jürgen Hauger, CEO of the Vollmer Group. “Japan plays a central role in our positioning on the Asian market and is also very important for our internationalisation, which we continually expand via our branches across 14 countries.”
