Slow brightening after corona losses in the first half of the year

In the second quarter of 2020, the Homag Group also felt the effects of the corona pandemic more strongly. Accordingly, order intake and sales revenue declined in the first half of 2020. Since June, however, the Group has again recorded a slight increase in customer activity in most countries.
“As expected, the weeks and months of global lockdowns have also been reflected in our half-year figures,” says CEO Pekka Paasivaara. “However, we are cautiously optimistic that we have bottomed out in the second quarter.”

In the first six months of 2020, sales revenue of the Homag Group fell by 13 percent to 552 million euros (prior year: 637 million euros) and order intake by 17 percent to 493 million euros (prior year: 591 million euros). As of June 30, 2020, the order backlog stood at EUR 480 million (December 31, 2019: EUR 546 million). In the first half of 2020, the HOMAG Group generated operating EBIT of EUR 10.7 million (prior year: EUR 39.4 million). As of June 30, 2020, the Group employed 6,498 people (June 30, 2019: 6,592).

Thanks to stable supply chains, the Homag Group has been able to largely maintain production to date. However, customers have been very cautious with regard to investments. Pekka Paasivaara: “Demand in the first half of the year was very subdued, especially in the project business with large-scale plants. Although we are seeing the beginning of a recovery in customer activities, we are still far from the pre-crisis level. From today’s perspective, we expect the market environment to improve slightly in the second half of the year. However, it is difficult to predict when a real upturn will set in.”

In the second quarter, the Homag Group made important investment decisions for a successful future despite the challenging situation. By acquiring the remaining 75 percent of the shares in its long-standing sales and service partner in China, the company has put itself in an even better position for the expected market growth in China. The remaining 24 percent of the shares in Weinmann Holzbausystemtechnik GmbH, the timber construction expert in the group, were also acquired. With this acquisition, the Homag Group is strengthening its commitment to the solid wood segment.

The negative trend endures

Unfortunately, the period April to June 2020 did not bring any surprising news, and Acimall’s quarterly survey shows a difficult situation: The decline in orders for woodworking machines and tools is significant. Such a result was inevitable considering the closure of factories in April and the slow, gradual recovery of manufacturing operations in May.
Even a strong month of June could not save the final result of the quarter, which was severely affected by mass redundancies and distance working. However, the Italian sector is expecting stronger demand in the second half of the year.

The quarterly survey showed a 39.2 percent drop in orders compared to the same period last year, due to a 34.2 percent drop in international demand and a shocking 59.2 percent drop in domestic demand.

Seven percent of respondents indicated a positive trend in production (compared to 12 percent in the first quarter), while 86 percent indicated a decline in production (compared to 69 percent in the quarter from January to March) and the remaining 7 percent indicated a stable situation (compared to 19 percent).

At the end of the first quarter of 2020, 69 percent of firms expected a decline in employment; this figure has now fallen to 47 percent, while 53 percent believe that the employment trend will be stable (compared to 75 percent three months ago). Nobody expects a positive trend in employment.

Remains stable despite corona crisis

Success for Blum: Thanks to a good start into the fiscal year 2019/2020, the fittings specialist closes with a group turnover of 1,906.92 million Euro. With a plus of 14.90 million or plus 0.8 percent, this corresponds roughly to the previous year’s level.

After a good start to the financial year, the corona virus caused severe distortions in the global markets from April onwards and also led to a sharp drop in sales at Blum. The company was nevertheless able to supply its customers in over 120 countries on a continuous basis. Blum continues to push its international orientation and now has 32 subsidiaries and representative offices worldwide. In March 2020, a location in South Africa was added. Blum generates 97 percent of its sales, 44 percent of which are generated in the EU and 15 percent in the USA.

The number of employees at Blum as of 30.06.2020 is 8 349 worldwide, 6 180 of them in Vorarlberg, which is 262 more than in the previous year. From September 2020, 94 new apprentices will start their training at the company in Vorarlberg – 23 of them girls. This means that 378 apprentices will be in training at Blum Austria, where young people have been trained as technical experts for half a century now. The subsidiary Blum USA trains 24 apprentices to become specialists. For the first time, 4 young people are being trained at Blum Poland.

In Western Europe, markets such as Italy, France, England or Spain were in lockdown, sometimes for weeks at a time. This has also led to a decline in sales for Blum in this region. In Eastern Europe, the company was able to record growth despite economic restrictions, some of which were considerable. Managing Director Philipp Blum says: “For us, the European Union remains a significant stability factor. Keeping the borders open for freight traffic at all times has enabled us to supply our customers worldwide without interruption even during the crisis”. Sales in North America remained at the previous year’s level, while in the South American markets Blum had to accept a significant decline from the previous year’s level. In the Asia-Pacific region, the fittings manufacturer also achieved an increase in the past business year thanks to the continued very positive development of China. “However, India has been hit hard by the crisis,” explained Managing Director Philipp Blum at the press conference. “And with the exception of China, the South East Asian region. In China, the economy already picked up again in the course of March”.

Of course, new products also contributed to the growth. Blum was also able to register 79 new patents in 2019 (out of a total of around 2,100 now).

Total investments of the Blum Group in the business year 2019/2020 amounted to 327 million Euro. In Vorarlberg, the construction of the extension in Plant 4 in Bregenz is progressing according to plan. A new production hall with 49,000 square meters of floor space and a high-bay warehouse will be built here by summer 2021. For this project, Blum is once again using a multi-storey construction method in order to conserve space resources. In the immediate vicinity of Plant 4, the fittings manufacturer acquired the factory property from Wolford. The buildings are leased back to Wolford on a long-term basis, and Blum intends to use unused space itself in the foreseeable future. “Our investments in the region are a clear commitment to the Vorarlberg location”, says Managing Director Martin Blum. Important investments are also taking place internationally. In China, the construction of the new production site including an automatic high-bay warehouse has started, Blum expects to complete the project by the end of 2022, while in the USA, the extension of the warehouse and production areas will be completed by the end of the year. In Canada, the local subsidiary will move into a new building with warehouse, office and showroom in late autumn 2020.

Blum believes that the outlook for the coming months is fraught with uncertainty. The after-effects of the health crisis will continue to be felt in the global economy for some time to come. Blum considers it particularly important for the European Union to find a common way to tackle the challenges ahead. Philipp Blum says: “For us as an internationally active company, this community is particularly fundamental. In the future, the traditional company will continue to focus on the constant expansion of international markets, close customer relations and ongoing innovations in the product and service area. From the very beginning, Blum has been pursuing a strategy for the long-term preservation of the company for its employees, according to the management. “The past months have been very challenging for us as a company and we are taking a lot with us for the future. We would like to thank our team for their commitment and cohesion,” emphasizes Philipp Blum.

The company eagerly awaits the business development in autumn. “In recent months, the demand situation has been very positive for us.

Luigi de Vito is the new president

At this year’s Annual General Meeting of the Italian association Acimall, new elections were due: Luigi De Vito of the Scm Group from Rimini was elected President for the period 2020 to 2023, assisted by Marianna Daschini of Greda from Mariano Comense as Vice President. The assembled members also blessed the financial report of one of the most difficult years for Acimall and the entire global economy.

De Vito is Division Manager Wood at Scm Group and responsible for production, product development, sales and customer service. After studying business administration at the Luiss University in Rome, he gained some management experience abroad. Since 2008 he has been working in the woodworking industry. He joined the Scm Group in 2012.

In his inaugural speech, De Vito thanked outgoing President Lorenzo Primultini: “He has managed to lead the Association through one of the most difficult times in its history, without losing sight of the values that such an association must embody”. Afterwards, the newly elected President introduced Vice-President Marianna Daschini to the members, most of whom were “on” digitally, and stressed the importance of a young female leader in this position. Daschini has been celebrating great successes as managing director of Greda for several years.

Most recently, De Vito addressed the issues he has set himself for his term of office: Promoting open dialogue between member companies and other associations; focusing resources on strategic projects such as access to credit, business development and supply chain initiatives; supporting and developing member companies’ brands; and creating an environment conducive to the exchange of best practices in market strategy, sales and technology trends.

Won’t happen again until 2022

Due to the still fragile corona situation, stricter hygiene and distance regulations for trade fairs in Baden-Württemberg and continuing restrictions in international travel, “Paintexpo” 2020 is now cancelled after all The next world’s leading trade fair for industrial painting technology will take place in 2022 as scheduled.

“Together with exhibitors and partners, we had hoped to organize “Paintexpo” 2020 in October with appropriate health and safety measures for all participants. In the meantime, however, the omens have changed, partly due to new regulations for holding trade fairs in Baden-Württemberg, so that we have to cancel the event after all,” reports Jürgen Haußmann, Managing Director of the organiser Fairfair GmbH. This decision has been taken on the basis of a survey of all exhibitors at “Paintexpo” 2020, in which a large proportion also spoke out against a further postponement.

Many companies are currently preoccupied with the economic effects of the Corona pandemic, so participation in the fair is not at the top of their priority list. In addition, the protection of health and the containment of infections continue to play a central role. Contacts and travel activities are therefore limited to necessary interactions. This also includes the fact that companies sometimes prohibit trade fair visits and international travel continues to be subject to strict limits. Another important aspect in deciding against hosting “Paintexpo” 2020 was the requirements of the planned “Corona Regulation Trade Fairs” of the Baden-Württemberg state government.

“We will now devote all our energy to preparing the next regular ‘Paintexpo’ in order to offer the industry the best conditions for a successful participation in the fair. The next world’s leading trade fair for industrial painting technology will take place from 26 to 29 April 2022 at the Karlsruhe Exhibition Centre.

Doesn’t take place in November either – Next date planned for 2022

The “Xylexpo” will not take place this year. Cepra, the “operative arm” of the organizing Italian association Acimall, announced today that the “catch-up date” of November 10 to 13, 2020 in Milan is also impossible to keep.

Acimall President Lorenzo Primultini explained in a letter to exhibitors: “Postponing the exhibition until November 2020 seemed to be the best possible solution, but the efforts of our organization in recent months and the constant monitoring of all conditions necessary to offer a successful exhibition have clearly shown that the situation in November will not yet be favorable.

With its global reach and more than one in three exhibitors and visitors coming from abroad, ‘Xylexpo’ has an international soul and vocation that would be seriously threatened by sanitary and economic conditions still unresolved in many regions of the world.

Therefore, Xylexpo is not scheduled to return until 2022. The exhibition team is already working on designing an event to create a new and more modern “digitally oriented” showcase.

Cancelled in 2020 – Next fair planned for October 2021

The next edition of the “International Furniture Manufacturing Component Exhibition” (Ifmac), one of the most important trade fairs for woodworking machinery in South East Asia, will be held in Jakarta from 12 to 15 October 2021. Ifmac, which was scheduled for this year in September, was initially postponed until October 2020. However, due to the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic, this date cannot be realized. For this reason, the Indonesian trade fair company Wakeni (PT. Wahana Kemalaniaga Makmur) as organizer and Deutsche Messe AG from Hanover as partner of Ifmac are now concentrating all their efforts on next year’s event.
“In view of the continuing uncertainty about the lifting of travel restrictions by the Indonesian government due to the Covid 19 situation, we unfortunately have to come to this difficult but necessary decision. Ifmac & Woodmac is an international exhibition with large participation by foreign companies and attracts visitors from all over South East Asia. All efforts will now focus on bringing the industry’s players together for a strong exhibition in 2021 to support the recovery of the Indonesian furniture industry,” said Rini Sumardi, Director of Wakeni.

Credit approval for environmental protection

The BNL – Group BNP Paribas, one of the leading European banking and financial services companies, supports the Italian Biesse Group in actively protecting the environment. The bank granted Biesse a loan of 50 million euros. The machine specialist intends to use this money to achieve a sustainable reduction in CO2 emissions, make greater use of renewable energy sources and protect the health of its employees even better.
The economic conditions of the loan are directly linked to the environmental and social sustainability objectives: they will improve if the Biesse Group achieves its objectives, which are constantly monitored and measured.
With this step, Biesse underlines its focus on the environment and aims at an increasingly energy-efficient production, mainly by using more energy from certified renewable sources and significantly reducing indirect CO2 emissions. The Group is also making an even greater commitment to all its employees by certifying its occupational health and safety management system in accordance with the international standard “Uni ISO 45001”.
