“Take responsibility for your actions!”

Today, June 5, is “World Environment Day”. The day of action is celebrated worldwide. Dr. Georg Emprechtinger, owner and managing director of Team 7, does not miss the opportunity to remind us of our responsibility towards nature in a statement: “Nature gives us everything we need to live – food, clean water and fresh air. We are a part of it and how we deal with it also decides our future. It is time to remember and appreciate the things we are given. It is time to take responsibility for our actions and respect the needs of nature. Because only if we live consciously and sustainably can we preserve the sensitive ecosystem in its fascinating diversity – and thus also the basis of life for future generations.

We at Team 7 have made sustainability and environmental protection the focus of our actions. The woods from sustainable forestry, which we treat exclusively with natural oil and process in a resource-saving manner, can be returned to the natural cycle after their long life. A benefit for nature – but also for people. With its sensual feel and incomparable aesthetics, the fragrant wood brings home the feeling of security that one feels when walking in the forest. After all, nature not only gives us the essentials of life. When I walk through the forest, I do not only see trees that bind CO2 and convert it into oxygen. I see overwhelming beauties, grown for decades and with individual character. The fine balance of nature radiates a unique harmony, which touches me deeply and allows me to find peace.

Our ecological footprint shows how much we influence this fragile balance. How we affect nature, it affects us in turn – that’s why we preserve a world worth living in by protecting the ecosystem. And that is why mindfulness is the order of the day.”

SCM Group

Register now for the worldwide unique “SCM Live Show”

SCM, a leader in the field of woodworking technologies since 1952, presents its technological innovations through new tools and state-of-the-art multimedia channels for all professionals and companies in the sector. This is the aim of the “SCM Live Show”, according to the Italians “the worldwide event of the year”, which will be held as live streaming from June 30th to July 2nd 2020. The online show is taking place because around the globe the most important events in the industry have so far been cancelled or postponed to the last months of the year due to the corona pandemic. Despite this issue, SCM intends to continue to provide its comprehensive support in terms of technology and know-how for the production and manufacturing needs of all woodworking companies, from large industrial to craft businesses, from furniture to windows and doors to carpentry.

As part of the “SCM Live Show”, the Italian group has put together a varied programme of live broadcasts and webinars. On all three days of the event, participants from all over the world will be able to find out about technological change via the Internet and, as in a live television show, will also be able to proactively contact SCM’s experts. From the “Technology Center” in Rimini and from other Group locations, they will explain the most important innovations in the field of woodworking processes and key market trends.

“We are experiencing a time of profound change. And SCM is transforming a challenge – the cultivation of customer relations – into a digital strategy,” emphasizes Luigi De Vito, Director of the Wood SCM Division. “This is what we have been working on for the last few months, using our digital tools and services to ensure all maintenance, support and training activities are carried out remotely. A worldwide unique event such as the ‘SCM Live Show’ is another building block of this. The technological innovation, which has always been a unique selling point for SCM with its powerful, flexible and advanced solutions, is flanked by a communicative and multimedia innovation to write a new chapter in the history of woodworking.”.

The numerous technological innovations that will be at the heart of the event, such as integrated cells and stand-alone machines for different applications, will meet the most varied production requirements of the second stage of woodworking: from the modernization of the wide range of machining and drilling centres for panels to the machining centres for solid wood and for wood construction; from the offers for flexible and J-shaped industrial edges to angular dividing saws; from the integrated surface treatment with the novelties in the pressing, sanding and finishing sectors to the latest solutions for packaging; from the specific technologies for window production and the integrated lines for door production to the solutions with double-end profilers and automatic planing and profiling machines. On show, as always, will also be the widest and world-leading range of machines for joinery, with a new specific cell for panel sawing, drilling and edge banding. Exclusively, a new app for the craftsman will be introduced.

The focus will be on the “Smart&Human Factory” for the furniture industry. This was presented with great success at the “Ligna 2019” and will be shown with new advantages during the live show of SCM. The aim is to increase the productivity and flexibility of panel processing, reduce scrap and waste and optimize the quality of the end product even with the most sensitive materials. The new version is just one example of the different configurations that can be used to tailor this production model to production requirements. It consists of flexible automated cells with a modular structure, integrated by anthropomorphic robots and interconnected by self-propelled intelligent shuttles.

Has bought De Stefani

Portfolio expansion at the Giardina Group: The Italian specialist for coating technologies for the wood, glass, plastics and metal industries and for the finishing of composite materials has acquired the manufacturer De Stefani Valerio & C snc based in Giussano (Italy). This means that in future, sanding and edge banding machines will also be part of the Giardina range. De Stefani Valerio & C is a small, agile manufacturer that has been operating all over the world for over forty years, mainly in the field of sanding solutions for craft businesses.

The signing of the contract coincided with the global foreclosure due to the Covid 19 pandemic. “We have been working on this project for some time now and have completed it despite the circumstances”, comments Stefano Mauri, who owns the Giardina Group together with his brother Riccardo. “We believe that, especially at a time like the present, companies need to show that they are looking ahead: For example in the form of such a project. It proves that there is enough strength and above all a perspective for the future of the company. Without waiting to see to what extent governments and institutions will intervene and possibly intervene or support. Today it is more important than ever to believe in your own strengths and ideas.”

Despite Corona, Giardina has not been idle over the last few weeks: The analysis and evaluation processes, which should lead to the companies growing together as harmoniously as possible, have already been completed. There is a clear plan for the integration of the teams and products and how sales will be synchronised. De Stefani will continue to produce at the headquarters in Giussano. Responsibility for this and coordination with the management of the Giardina Group will be assumed by the sons of the company founder Valerio De Stefani, Sara and Alessio De Stefani.

The takeover of De Stefani is a further important chapter in the “Giardina Group 2030” strategy. The focus of the plans is on meeting the customer markets with the widest possible range of products. Very important in this respect is comprehensive know-how in the planning and construction of specially tailored solutions for all areas in which the Group operates, from wood to glass, plastics to the automotive industry and composite materials and aerospace.

Moves from September to October

The “International Furniture Manufacturing Component Exhibition” (IFMAC), one of the most important trade fairs for woodworking machinery 2020 in Southeast Asia will start in October. Due to current developments surrounding the Covid 19 pandemic, the Indonesian trade fair company Wakeni (PT. Wahana Kemalaniaga Makmur) and Deutsche Messe AG from Hanover are postponing “Ifmac” until 14 to 17 October 2020.

This means that the event, originally planned for September (23 to 26), will provide a somewhat longer period for further easing of the current pandemic restrictions. Indonesia has an internationally significant furniture industry, which plays an important role in the growth of the local woodworking market. However, Indonesia’s manufacturing industry in particular is suffering greatly from the consequences of the current crisis. The Indonesian furniture companies need new technologies to adapt the quality of their products to the increased requirements.

“Ifmac 2020 is the most important trade fair for woodworking machinery in Southeast Asia this year. By postponing it to October, we are extending the period for possible relaxation of pandemic restrictions and giving both exhibitors and visitors more planning security and a little more time to prepare for ‘Ifmac’,” emphasizes Christian Pfeiffer, Global Director “Ligna” & Woodworking Shows at Deutsche Messe. “Together with Wakeni, we will definitely do everything we can to offer the best possible platform to find out about the current state of the art in woodworking technology – naturally with the then applicable distance rules and hygiene measures.

The “Ifmac” (International Furniture Manufacturing Component Exhibition) is a trade fair for woodworking machines and tools, machines, materials and components for interior design and materials and components for furniture production. Since 2012, it has been held annually in autumn at the Jakarta International Expo Kemayoran Exhibition Centre. Ifmac” is organized by the Indonesian trade fair company Wakeni (PT. Wahana Kemalaniaga Makmur). Since 2019, “Ifmac” has been held in cooperation with Deutsche Messe. The event is supported by the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia and several local and international associations, including Eumabois, the European Association of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers.

“Green Gluing” for a year

In May 2019, the Robatech Group launched a new branding. For a year now, the Swiss manufacturer of industrial adhesive application systems has been using “Green Gluing” to draw more attention to its innovative and sustainable solutions. The donation from the voting campaign launched at that time has now been donated to three environmental organizations.

“The environment is important to us” was the title of Robatech AG’s voting campaign in May 2019 in favor of the environmental organizations Rainforest Alliance, Ocean Conservancy and Birdlife International. For each vote cast, 5 Swiss francs were credited to the accounts of the organisations concerned. The interim results in the ranking reflected the explosive nature of current environmental issues over time: In May, the topic of avoiding plastics moved the environmental debate. When the forest fires broke out in the Amazon in August 2019, the tide turned. In the end, Rainforest Alliance received almost 50 percent of the cap amount of 10,000 Swiss francs.

Behind the voting campaign and the new company branding lies a corporate philosophy that characterizes Robatech through and through: With every sustainable measure, no matter how small, something can be achieved. Even if adhesive application per se is not necessarily environmentally friendly, Robatech’s energy-efficient application systems enable adhesive to be used very sparingly in industrial processes. With a fine spray application of adhesive for pallet stabilization, it is even possible to avoid using tons of plastic film to wrap pallets. In addition, Robatech guarantees an exceptionally long backward compatibility for its application systems for spare parts of 30 years.

Sustainability also plays a major role in production. In 2014 Robatech installed a solar system on the roof of the warehouse. The system covers around 50 percent of the total energy requirements at the company’s headquarters in Muri. In winter, waste heat from the compressed air system is used to heat the warehouse. Packaging is also used several times. “Green Gluing” therefore stands for much more than optimized gluing processes. “Green Gluing” combines innovation and efficiency for more sustainability in companies and offers exactly the service that keeps Robatech equipment alive for a long time.

Exemplary crisis management and clear visions for the future

“Every crisis offers opportunities – and we seize them. Not in order to ‘somehow’ get through the Corona crisis, but to emerge from it stronger”, explained Dr. Kurt Schmalz, managing partner of J. Schmalz GmbH, on the occasion of the first virtual press day of Schmalz. And he continues: “Our systems are particularly challenged, for example, when handling food in distribution centres or when gripping medical products. We make our contribution so that our customers can also overcome the crisis – that is our claim.

That’s why we secured our supply chain at an early stage, our ability to deliver is assured. What’s more, despite the cancellation of trade fairs, we have not only succeeded in maintaining personal contact with our customers, but have also expanded it through new channels: For example, we have established tools such as a live chat and video consultation in a very short time, and our first virtual trade fair is about to start. We are using these channels to introduce our customers to the numerous product innovations we launched in the spring, including solutions for robotics and for the digitization of gripping processes.

It goes without saying that the Corona crisis has brought with it enormous challenges for our company. However, we are very well positioned as a financially independent family business. Even in the first few days, we set the right course to mitigate the consequences: This includes, for example, the establishment of an internal crisis management team that constantly reassesses the current situation and implements appropriate measures. With our hygiene and conduct rules, we go beyond the requirements and recommendations of the authorities.

Very early on, Schmalz established external warehouses worldwide and equipped them well in order to remain able to deliver – also because the products were and are urgently needed in many areas, especially during the Corona crisis. “Just think, for example, of the logistics surrounding the significantly increased demand for disinfectants. We play an important role here”, says Schmalz.

But also as a company, all the stops were pulled out. For example, in the various branches, where help was provided with the procurement of masks and protective materials, or by using the 3D printers to produce new types of face masks to combat the pandemic. In principle, the company from the northern Black Forest still sees itself as well prepared for the future: Schmalz, as a family business, is financially independent and has a high equity ratio. During the last few months, the company has done everything in its power to ensure the stability of the company and to secure all jobs worldwide, according to the statement.

Due to the consistently high or even higher demand in some areas, Schmalz can look back on a quite good first quarter of this fiscal year. Nevertheless, the family-owned company is now also experiencing declines in orders and has reduced production capacities accordingly. “We are currently working with various scenarios and have prepared ourselves intensively for a double-digit decline in incoming orders and sales. However, we hope for an improvement from the second half of the year onwards, if the situation does not deteriorate again,” explains the company owner.

Schmalz’s performance last year was very good: the vacuum expert recorded sales of around 190 million euros. The commitment to research and development was about nine percent of the turnover. The sales network in Austria has been expanded by a branch office, which means that Schmalz now operates 20 of its own locations and cooperates with sales partners in 60 other countries. In addition to the headquarters in Glatten, there are production facilities in Melbourne (Australia), Shanghai (China), Pune (India), Yokohama (Japan) and Raleigh (USA). The demand for Schmalz products up to the Corona crisis was very strong in North America and especially in the USA in the last one to two years, and there was also dynamic growth in Asia – with China and Japan as drivers. Europe showed consistently good growth, led by Poland and Turkey. Broken down by industry, interest was very good in logistics, packaging, electronics and the medical and pharmaceutical sectors.

Schmalz had recently invested again in the headquarters in Glatten and expanded production. Construction work began in autumn 2017 and the entire building was ready for occupation in summer 2019. There was an expansion of around 11,000 square metres. Construction of a new office building was also started in mid-2017, and the company moved into the building in autumn 2018. Around 3,000 square metres are now available here for the Innovation department as well as for testing and laboratory facilities, the expansion of global sales, flexible working environments and in the form of creative rooms. In total, space for well over 100 new jobs has been created.

The family-owned company has also grown internationally: In China, there was a new greenfield site with an initial 7,600 square meters of floor space for construction phase 1, in Poland a new building with around 900 square meters and in Italy a comprehensive renovation of an existing building.

In order to continue to position itself effectively in the future, Schmalz is focusing, among other things, on the area of robotics. The manufacturer definitely wants to take its place in this growth area and has a broad domain knowledge. The goal is to provide ready-to-connect complete solutions for gripping, and a powerful team is working on this topic.

In addition to robotics, digitization plays a decisive role, with the clear vision that there should be a noticeable added value in every step of the process. “Customers only benefit from digitization when there is visible and noticeable added value for them – in all process steps, from design and configuration to procurement, operation and service,” explains Dr. Kurt Schmalz. And he continues: “This is what we are aligning our organisation and our products to. The organization includes a Digital Lab for technology and product digitization, Digital Business for e-commerce, sales channels and customer front-ends, and GPS Gesellschaft für Produktionssysteme as an external development unit. On the product side, we proceed in such a way that the hardware requires high intelligence and connectivity. At the same time, new software solutions are needed to help leverage the potential of the devices. Then there is added value through the intelligent use of data.”

Enters into a strategic partnership with 3CAD

The Homag Group has once again been able to expand its network of innovative partners: The Homag Group and 3CAD have agreed to cooperate closely. Because in times of increasing digitalisation of distribution channels, the possibilities of configurators are also becoming increasingly important for the customers of the Homag Group. As part of the Compusoft Group, 3CAD is a highly innovative leading provider for the creation of such configurators and web shop connections. With this strategic partnership, the mechanical engineering company aims to ensure that the requirements of its customers can continue to be optimally met in the future.

Within the Homag Group, Homag Software is the specialist and, by the company’s own account, market leader for systems for production planning and control of production processes in the woodworking and wood processing industry. With its own software and digital solutions, the Homag Group is paving the way for leading the industry into the digital age.

“The combination of the configuration of products in the web shop and the seamless processing of data in our production planning systems is a very great advantage for the customer,” explains Uwe Jonas, head of Digital Factory and Software at Homag. “The data connection for the customer will thus be completely seamless in the future and the customer will receive the solution from a partner integrated into his system landscape”. In addition to operational cooperation in specific customer projects, the two companies have also agreed to cooperate intensively on development projects, and intend to think about future business models together.

“In addition to opening up new markets, the cooperation with Homag enables us to focus our development and project expertise even more strongly on the digitization of our industry,” emphasizes Andrea Gnoato, CEO of 3CAD. “We are convinced that this cooperation will accelerate our efforts to deliver new and exciting products to our customers. In Homag we have found an innovative and therefore ideal partner for our products”.

The organizers keep to the date in August

For more than 50 years, the “International Woodworking Fair” (“IWF”) in Atlanta has reflected the needs and interests of the woodworking industry, and this is the only reason why the trade fair platform was once created. According to the organizers, this mission is to continue to be pursued as the Coronavius and COVID 19 pandemic reshapes global trade and requires organizations around the world to adopt new plans and practices. As things change almost daily – and the world learns to adapt – the exhibition management continues to work on the event to reflect the change, while paving the way for a new future.

For this very reason, the “IWF” is also scheduled to take place as planned at the end of August with accompanying events. The “IWF” team justifies its adherence to the date with the fact that the late summer time creates conditions that differ greatly from the current ones. In addition, the sectors represented by the “IWF” have decided to resume full operation, according to the organizer. “The holding of ‘IWF’ 2020 will help clients to regain market share and accelerate a recovery in business.

But it is unlikely to be comparable to the previous event: “IWF 2020 will look, feel and function very differently from previous fairs. Such a change is inevitable, inevitable and inescapable. The latest information on show schedules can be viewed at any time on the event homepage,” says the two associations WMIA and WMMA, which own the fair. You can find the current status here.

If you look at the information, you will quickly see how hard the show team is working to prepare for the expected social and business conditions at the end of August. The course will be determined on the basis of comprehensive studies. “Over the next four months, we will continue to adjust the planning and execution of the fair as new guidelines emerge and conditions inevitably change.”

German furniture industry experiences difficult month of April

In recent weeks, the German furniture industry has suffered massively from the effects of the Corona pandemic. As a result of the temporary closure of furniture stores, manufacturers recorded a drastic decline in orders from retailers. In a joint flash survey conducted by the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM) and the Associations of the Wood and Furniture Industry of North Rhine-Westphalia, just under 80 percent of companies reported that their order intake had fallen by more than 20 percent since the beginning of the corona crisis. Due to the deterioration in the order situation and the lack of supplier parts, production capacities had to be cut back in many cases. Almost 80 percent of the companies introduced short-time working in April.

“In view of the difficult economic situation in our industry, we very much welcome the fact that the furniture trade was allowed to open up again throughout Germany,” says VDM Managing Director Jan Kurth. He added that the reopening of shops was having a positive impact on the furniture industry. However, the increase in capacity is presenting producers with new challenges. “Here we need close cooperation in the industry, such as regular information on the delivery status from the industry and delivery possibilities in the trade,” says Kurth.

The Corona crisis gave a boost to the online furniture trade. Due to store closures, more customers took advantage of the opportunity to buy via the Internet. Around 40 percent of the companies surveyed reported a revival in their online business.

Looking ahead to the coming months, however, the industry is extremely cautious. By the end of the year, a good 40 percent of the companies expect a decline in sales of more than 20 percent. Around 40 percent of manufacturers are preparing for losses of between 10 and 20 percent. It is estimated that the industry will be short of a good 3 billion euros in sales by the end of the year. Against this background, VDM is in favor of a broad-based economic stimulus program that does not target individual sectors alone.
