Takes place in May as a hybrid event

Date shift and digital features as a supplement: The next “Domotex” will not take place as planned, from 15 to 18 January 2021, but a good four months later, from 20 to 22 May, in Hanover and then as a “hybrid” event. With this decision, Deutsche Messe AG is creating planning security in uncertain corona times.

Deutsche Messe AG has decided to relocate the event despite the fact that two-thirds of the exhibitor space of around 62,000 square meters has been booked, and despite an existing comprehensive hygiene concept for corona-compliant implementation. “The reasons for this are the current developments of the Covid 19 pandemic, which is rampant worldwide, and the related desire of customers, exhibitors and visitors to hold ‘Domotex’ at a later date,” a press release states. A digital conference is planned for January 15, 2021, the original start date of the trade fair.

The great strength of the world’s leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings, its internationality, is an incalculable weakness in Corona times. In January 2020, 70 percent of visitors came from abroad and over 80 percent of exhibitors came from more than 60 nations. Currently, the Covid-19 infection figures are rising again all over the world. In many cases, strict travel and quarantine restrictions are in place, and it is not foreseeable when these will be lifted. In addition, there are fundamental fears about travel and stays abroad. At the same time, however, the availability of vaccines is also envisaged for the end of 2020. “It is our duty to act responsibly. From numerous discussions with exhibitors and partners, we have learned that the most important thing is to create planning security at an early stage,” says Dr. Andreas Gruchow, Member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Messe AG. “Thanks to our comprehensive hygiene and safety concept and the positive registration status, we were still very optimistic until recently. But recent developments now show that it is not certain whether the travel situation will improve significantly by January 2021. Against this background, we have decided to postpone ‘Domotex’ from January to May 2021. The discussions we have had with the market so far have been very positive and show that postponing it until May is the right decision!

And one thing has also become clear in the many discussions with market participants: The desire for complementary digital offers to take account of the rapidly growing number of online channels, including those of the flooring industry, and to offer a worldwide neutral platform as “Domotex”. For this reason, “Domotex” 2021 will take place as a “hybrid event” from Thursday to Saturday (20-22 May) inclusive – a physical trade fair supplemented by virtual elements. This will enable visitors who, for various reasons, will not be able to travel even in May, to participate at least digitally. For exhibitors, on the other hand, a hybrid format will continue to guarantee the accustomed international reach: Physically on the exhibition grounds as well as digitally extended to generate even more coverage through new display formats.

In addition, the “Domotex” team is working on a digital conference to be held on January 15, 2021. The main theme “Cover New Ground!” is intended to stimulate the industry to discuss the effects of the “New Normality in Times of Corona” on carpets and floor coverings and at the same time motivate people to think beyond previous strategies, visions and experiences in the design and application of floors and to look to the future.

Start of assembly and modernization in Turkey

New milestones in the long-standing trustful customer relationship between Kastamonu Entegre and Siempelkamp: At the end of July, the assembly of the new forming and press line with “Contiroll” Generation 9 in the format 7′ x 37.1 m for particleboard production started at the Samsun location. At the same time, the leading producer of wood-based panels – No. 1 in Turkey, No. 4 in Europe, No. 7 worldwide – ordered a modernization package for its MDF line made by Siempelkamp in Kastamonu City in July, which will be installed at the end of 2020.

With this package both companies confirm their strong partnership even in difficult times due to the restrictions caused by the Corona pandemic. With the installation, the continuous forming and press line in Samsun – replacement investment for an existing particleboard plant at the Yontas location acquired in 2009 – is entering the home stretch. Start-up is scheduled for early 2021. The Siempelkamp subsidiary Pallmann will supply the knife ring flakers – two “Microflaker” and two “Macroflaker” flakers as well as a knife ring flaker for dry particleboard processing. An automatic setting and sharpening machine from Pallmann for the automatic sharpening of the blunt knives in the ring is also included in the scope of delivery.

Kastamonu is also currently relying on Siempelkamp support at another of its six Turkish locations: In Kastamonu City, capital of the province of the same name in northern Turkey, an MDF line with “Contiroll” in the format 7′ x 55.3m will receive a modernization package from the Siempelkamp subsidiary Siempelkamp Logistics & Service GmbH (SLS). This package includes a lightweight board package with which the customer can produce lightweight MDF boards with raw densities down to 500 kilograms per cubic meter. In addition, the “Sico Master Gauge” measuring frame is also included in the scope of delivery. This novel measuring frame, which is mounted on the foundation, encloses the two heating plates of the “Contiroll” in the calibration area on the control system. Its advantages lie in the simultaneous measurement of the upper and lower hotplaten positions, independent of the influences of the mechanical expansion of the frames.

In addition, the “Contiroll” press receives an additional cylinder track in the press calibration area, combined with a single cylinder track control. This in order to further minimize the raw board tolerances and further reduce the amount of sanding of the raw boards. This modernization provides Kastamonu Entegre with considerable added value, as the wood-based materials producer is thus able to significantly expand its product portfolio, reduce raw material costs and raw material usage, and tap further market potential.

Kastamonu Entegre currently operates eight Siempelkamp plants with continuous press technology in Turkey, Russia, and Italy. The close connection to Siempelkamp began in 1969 with a belt-fed tray plant for particleboard production in Kastamonu City. The two current projects underline the innovative power of this business relationship, which does not stagnate even in challenging times. As a proven partner and connecting link of Siempelkamp in the Turkish market, GIM Export is again involved with its financing support. During the more than 25-year cooperation between Siempelkamps and Michael P. Krocker, owner of GIM Export, 29 new plants including the current project have been realized so far.

“Especially now we are proud to support the entrepreneurial energy of Kastamonu Integres with our services in two different projects and to contribute to the future orientation of our partner. We are now looking forward to the joint work on site with the Kastamonu team and a successful commissioning of both projects,” said Ulrich Kaiser, Head of Sales Wood Division, Siempelkamp, and Dr. Stephan Niggeschmidt, Managing Director of SLS.

Sustainability with letter and seal

Wood is nature. Wood is design. Wood is life. For many centuries this material has provided valuable services. It is and remains one of the most beautiful materials – because furniture made of this substance flatters the eyes and soul. But naturally wood is not equal wood.

On the proverbial wood way is, who looks with the furniture purchase exclusively at the price. This not only violates the lowest quality standards, but also the responsibility we bear for future generations. Schmidt Küchen und Wohnwelten is clearly aware of this obligation. This means that we are the right address for customers who attach particular importance to the careful use of resources. With its sustainable economic concept, the family-owned company is among the ecological avant-garde in industrial production. The furniture manufacturer was awarded the renowned “Green Franchise Award” for its living eco-concept. Schmidt also claims to be the only industrial manufacturer in Europe with six certifications: In addition to ISO 14001 for the environmentally friendly production process and ISO 50001 for energy efficiency, the custom-made furniture specialist has also been awarded the “NF Environnement Ameublement” environmental seal – an environmental certification initiated by the French furniture industry – for its concrete contribution to reducing environmental pollution by cutting CO2 emissions in production. Schmidt also successfully completed the “Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification” – PEFC for short.

This certificate documents that the majority of the wood used in production comes from sustainable and controlled forestry. The stipulated quota of 70 percent is clearly exceeded with 82 percent. These recognitions are supplemented by the ISO 9001 certification for the high quality standards and OHSAS 18001 for hygiene and occupational safety. “However, these results are only one stage. A trampoline on the way to new and more demanding standards,” Anne Leitzgen points out. The granddaughter of the company founder is the president of the Schmidt Groupe, to which Schmidt Küchen und Wohnwelten belongs.

Schmidt customers can rely on the fact that the entire manufacturing process of their product is certified and checked by independent experts. “We certainly see ourselves as eco-pioneers in this respect. Our structure as a traditional family business requires us to think in generations and not in quarters. That is why sustainable development is one of our most important corporate goals,” says Anne Leitzgen. In many places, the furniture manufacturer, founded in 1934, has already been able to demonstrate that its self-imposed commitment to protecting people and nature is at the heart of its business activities. The photovoltaic systems installed and the consistent waste separation are just two small examples.

The emission of pollutants has been extremely reduced thanks to the commissioning of the over one million euro volatile organic compound incinerator. Apart from this, the French leader in the sector systematically recycles the waste produced in recycling chains and uses it to generate energy. The sawmill waste, for example, is used to heat the factories and offices. The zero-deposit policy applied focuses on the targeted recovery of materials through recycling, or on making them available for energy recovery through incineration and thus for heat or energy production. All materials used are subject to this requirement. Schmidt halves the European standard of four grams per 100 grams of chipboard when using formaldehyde, which is still indispensable according to the technical standard today.

Europe’s fifth-largest kitchen manufacturer received the “Prix d’Excellence de l’Entreprise Patrimoniale et Familiale” for its environmentally conscious corporate strategy and its lived ecological concept – the highest award for a medium-sized family business in the neighboring country.

It was also awarded the “Coup de Coeur” as an excellently managed group with sustainable growth. And it was decorated with the eco-design label of Ademe, the French agency for environmental and energy management. In all its plants, the company is committed to giving preference to energy-saving investments. Every salesperson also undergoes training in environmental standards. The design and manufacturing processes are always based on the Three Rs rule: réduire, réutiliser, recycler – in other words, reduce, reuse, recycle. Schmidt also gives priority to local suppliers in order to minimize transport distances, energy and unnecessary expenses. New logistics platforms have also been put into operation at the production sites to avoid any empty truck returns. In addition, electric vehicles are provided for transportation between the various production sites. For Schmidt, sustainable growth means producing more with fewer resources. Quality and ecological development go hand in hand.

Strategic investor Jamoo has taken over, Ralf Marohn is new managing director

On the home stretch: The takeover of Poggenpohl, according to the kitchen manufacturer the oldest kitchen brand in the world, by the strategic investor Jomoo Deutschland, a subsidiary of the Chinese Jomoo Group, is proceeding as planned. All contractual conditions have been fulfilled, so that the economic transition will take place on September 1, 2020.

“Poggenpohl will remain a German kitchen brand with production in Herford, which stands for sophisticated, modern design as well as high quality and reliability. Our customers can rely on the high brand promise. The jobs in Herford will be retained and the entire team of employees will return Poggenpohl to its old glory and strength,” announced newly appointed Managing Director Ralf Marohn (53) to the Poggenpohl team. The experienced manager is no stranger to the industry and has already been active as an entrepreneur for 28 years. Since 2014, he has headed the kitchen manufacturer RWK & Kuhlmann Küchen GmbH in Löhne, which was taken over from the bankruptcy. During this time Marohn has successfully restructured and at the same time expanded RWK & Kuhlmann Küchen.

Marohn expressed special thanks to the previous Poggenpohl Managing Director Gernot Mang for his good coordination during the transition. He also thanked the insolvency administrator Manuel Sack for his professional management of the company during the insolvency proceedings.

Attorney Sack, a partner in the nationwide law firm Brinkmann & Partner, said: “During the insolvency proceedings, I successfully continued operations together with Gernot Mang, and production continued to run stably on all working days. My sincere thanks go to our customers, suppliers and employees for this. Together, they trusted in a good future solution for this special company and actively supported us”.

Marohn also praised the high level of trust and loyalty that customers have shown to the Poggenpohl brand and its team. The employees in particular have been under enormous pressure since the beginning of the insolvency proceedings. “We are delighted that our customers continue to stand by Poggenpohl. This shows the close bond and firm belief in what Poggenpohl represents – in history and in the future.”

For the future, a strong focus on product design and product innovation is still planned. The further development of both continental European markets and regional overseas markets such as the USA, China, India and the Middle East will be a focus of investment. The network of existing branches and dealers will continue to grow in order to guarantee the high quality of Poggenpohl products and the best B2B customer service.

Two thirds of the space is already booked

“We’re just getting ready for the new normality,” says Maik Fischer, Director of “Interzum”, about the preparations for the world’s largest supplier and interior design trade fair. “Together with the industry, we want to reshape the future, that is our goal and our challenge,” the Director continued.

With the next “Interzum”, which will take place from 4th th 7th of May, Koelnmesse is offering the industry the first globally significant industry event since the beginning of the Corona pandemic and thus the desired platform to show innovative products, discuss current issues and thus revive business – naturally in compliance with applicable hygiene and protection regulations.

“We must not wait for old times to return, but must start into the future together with confidence and courage,” comments Maik Fischer on the current development, “because for the global furniture industry and interior professionals, ‘Interzum’ 2021 is essential to give them new impetus, discover innovative products and thus revive and expand their own businesses.

For the safety of exhibitors and visitors, Koelnmesse has developed “#B-SAFE4business “, a concept that has been agreed with the authorities and takes into account all hygienic, medical and organizational measures. The exhibitors can therefore expect a trade fair with high safety standards for all participants.

After expiration of the first early booking tariff in mid-June, the number of registrations is almost at the same level as at the comparable time of the “Interzum 2019”, which is historic in its dimensions. “This very pleasing number of registrations in these difficult times confirms that the exhibitors are eagerly awaiting ‘Interzum 2021’ for the global re-launch of their business,” says Maik Fischer, evaluating the number of registrations. This means that with the current start of planning, over two-thirds of the planned exhibition grounds have already been booked. In addition to many well-known exhibitors, from market leaders to small think tanks, Maik Fischer’s team can also welcome important returnees to Cologne next year. These include the Kastamonu Group and the companies Yildiz Entegre and Financiera Maderera (Finsa). The focus on digital printing and floor coverings, as well as a start-up area, will ensure additional attractiveness and guarantee further exhibitor potential in the remaining months. Currently, companies that have not yet registered for “Interzum” 2021 can reserve their stand space at a preferential price until September 30, 2020.

“Of course there is a lot of need for explanation at the moment, but we sense in our conversations with visitors that they not only see the necessity of a visit to the trade fair, but that they are also looking forward to the ‘Interzum’,” says Fischer. “Everything depends however on to what extent travel restrictions are lifted. However, despite the current travel restrictions, we already reach around 70 percent of trade visitors.”  At the same time, the team is also developing a hybrid event format for visitors who will not be able to travel to Cologne. “We will build up a sustainable and lasting digital extension of the ‘Interzum’ and learn from our digital formats of the coming fall – the ‘Gamescom’ and the ‘Dmexco’ – but also from the ‘Imm Cologne’ and ‘Living Kitchen’ 2021. We are thus giving exhibitors the opportunity to present themselves and their products digitally as well, to enter into an exchange with virtual visitors and thus increase the overall reach of their ‘Interzum’ presence. In addition to our digital matchmaking opportunities, we not only expand the business opportunities for our exhibitors, but also reach a wider range of visitors.

HPL Compendium published in English

ICDLI aisbl, the International Committee of the Decorative Laminates Industry, presented the English-language HPL Compendium to the professional public as part of its knowledge initiative on the material system HPL at the end of July. Further language versions are to follow from next year.

The English HPL Compendium, which has now been published, is a further important building block in the future transfer of knowledge about the production, processing and application of the HPL material system. It is thus possible, far beyond the German-speaking market, to impart practical knowledge to processors, suppliers and architects as well as the skilled workers of tomorrow.

The recently published textbook is accompanied by an accompanying seminar series of the HPL Academy. Module 1 of the seminar series provides basic knowledge about HPL. Due to the great success this year, the offer will be extended by further modules. The textbook is not only available in print format, but also in a PDF version, which can be downloaded free of charge from the ICDLI aisbl website www.icdli.com

The offer is rounded off with an adhesive table, which is intended in particular for the work of young scientists but also for laboratories and test facilities. It describes very clearly which adhesive systems can be used to apply HPL to various surfaces, thus demonstrating its wide range of possible applications. It is available on request from the office.

“Imm Cologne” will take place in 2021

Koelnmesse is convinced that “Imm Cologne” will take place next year: “We want to boldly take the path to new normality together with the industry,” says Matthias Pollmann, Executive Vice President Trade Fair Management at Koelnmesse, summing up the task with regard to the furniture fair. It is important to offer the industry a secure platform to maintain its position on the international market and to serve the topicality of the topic of living.

On January 18, 2021, the “Imm cologne” will open its doors together with “LivingKitchen”. Currently, 70 percent of the hall space is already occupied. “Under the current framework conditions, we can consider this a really very good registration figure,” explains Matthias Pollmann. “At the moment, we can also see an overall increase in interest in staging presence trade fairs compared to previous months. More and more the motivating realization becomes generally accepted that real meetings of humans are indispensable for the up and development of business relations.“

A further plus point: the topic of living is emerging as a winner from the crisis. Similar to the areas of camping, home office and digitalization, as well as the furnishing relevant topics of outdoor living, cooking & eating and home spa, home furnishing is one of the segments whose importance for people has increased once again due to the pandemic experience and which is experiencing a significant increase in demand in some cases.

The exhibitors can expect a trade fair with high security standards for all participants, a great impact on the public via the media and also digital alternatives to reach those visitors who cannot participate themselves, forecasts Matthias Pollmann. “Unfortunately, however, there is still uncertainty in the industry due to the recurring hot spots in Europe. I am therefore firmly convinced that we must now start living the ‘new normality’. We must not wait for old times to return, but must courageously shape the future together,” says the business unit manager.

To ensure the safety of exhibitors and visitors, Koelnmesse has developed a concept called “#B-SAFE4business” and agreed it with the authorities, in which all hygienic, medical and organizational measures are taken into account. In addition, a hygiene and infection protection concept has been developed that complies with the currently valid provisions of the Corona Protection Ordinance of North Rhine-Westphalia and the requirements of the responsible health authority. Among other things, used air in the exhibition halls is discharged to the outside and 100 percent new fresh air is supplied, so that aerosols cannot spread via the ventilation systems.

The “Imm Cologne” team continues to approach visitor acquisition with great confidence. “Of course, visitor frequency will depend on the situation in air travel, rail and public transport, as well as the extent to which travel restrictions are lifted. However, despite the current travel restrictions, we already reach around 90 percent of our trade visitors.”

In the last three years in particular, the event has been able to successively increase its share of international visitors from China, the USA and other growth markets, for example, through extensive marketing activities. Nevertheless, the “Imm cologne” is essentially a trade fair with a strong European environment. Therefore, a dramatic distortion in the visitor structure is not to be expected. “The German furniture industry, in particular, which focuses its foreign business to a large extent on European customers, can expect a high attendance rate of its export customers during ‘Imm Cologne 2021’,” says Pollmann.

“It is not only the traditionally high proportion of European interested parties that nourishes our hopes for a satisfactory number of trade visitors,” Claire Steinbrück sums up. “Following the cancellation of Orgatec, we also expect that architects in particular, who wanted to visit the fair, will now come to the imm cologne as an alternative.

The team around Matthias Pollmann and Claire Steinbrück is working purposefully to give the industry the best possible trade fair experience in January. And not only from the actual, but also from the customers’ perceived security. But they are also counting on the industry’s willingness to do business again – and here the furnishing sector is certainly one of the economic sectors that is particularly dependent on the real experience of the products and the staging at a trade fair. But both are firmly convinced of one thing: “We must now courageously take the path to a new normality.

Restructuring costs jobs

Siempelkamp has announced a restructuring program to sustainably strengthen the company’s competitiveness in the difficult global market environment. Due to the current pandemic and its effects on the global economy, the entrepreneurial challenges for the globally active Group have increased once again.

“We expect a lower order volume in the USA and Europe in the current fiscal year. In addition, our core markets have shifted towards the Asian market in the past and coming years,” explained Dr. Martin Stark, Siempelkamp’s CEO. “Due to the current global development in the context of the Corona pandemic we do not see a quick recovery,” Dr. Stark continued.

The restructuring program focuses on organizational and process optimisation, as well as various sales and digitalisation offensives and a strengthening of the production network. In addition, it is planned to adjust the personnel structure at the Krefeld location of Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH and Siempelkamp Maschinenfabrik GmbH to market realities. Dr. Martin Stark informed the Works Council of both companies about the plans of the management. In this context it is planned to cut approximately 260 jobs. The goal is to implement the job consolidation as socially acceptable as possible in the coming constructive dialogue with the Works Council.

Dr. Martin Stark: “The city of Krefeld and the location there is and will remain the heart of Siempelkamp. We are working at full speed to sustainably strengthen the competitiveness of the Group and the companies at the Krefeld location. Together with our managers and employees we will make Siempelkamp fit for the future”.

Successful major events in China

Optimism, business acumen, and impressive exhibitor and visitor numbers made “Toy & Edu China”, “Baby & Stroller China” and the first event “Licensing China” a success. After “Intertextile Shenzhen Apparal Fabrics” and “Yarn Expo” in July, they are among the first events organized by Messe Frankfurt since February. They took place from 6 to 8 August in the “Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center”. The company is thus sending a strong signal for the resumption of B2B events. After all, Messe Frankfurt’s events are once again taking place in Guangzhou.

With 1,321 exhibitors from eight countries and regions and more than 61,500 visitors, the three trade fairs offered their community an intensive live platform after months of interruption of industry events. Companies from Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Macao, Sweden, Taiwan and the USA were present.

“The overwhelming response shows not least that sustainable business relationships and the huge sales volumes associated with them work very well face-to-face, especially in times of crisis,” Wolfgang Marzin, Chairman of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt, is convinced. For Messe Frankfurt, Asia is a key region for its foreign business. “Shenzhen is an ideal trade fair venue for our customers to participate in the promising Southern Chinese market. For our events, the direct proximity to technological development and the region’s most important toy manufacturing center offers valuable synergies of cross-sector cooperation and thus ideal conditions for further development and growth”, emphasises Detlef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt responsible for the Consumer Goods Sector.

The trade fairs in Shenzhen were held in strict compliance with hygiene and safety standards. In addition to distance rules and compulsory masks, these included the online registration of all visitors, which was necessary in advance. Messe Frankfurt’s events in Guangzhou are also taking place again. Recently the “SPS – Industrial Automation Fair Guangzhou” (SIAF) as well as the “Asiamold” with more than 650 exhibitors were opened. The “SIAF Guangzhou” is the most important hub for intelligent industrial automation solutions in South China, while “Asiamold” presents the latest technologies from mold making to 3D printing and metalworking. Both events were held at the “China Import and Export Fair Complex” from August 11 to 13.
