Collaborates with Homag China at Asia’s premier machine and production trade show

Välinge Innovation have joined forces with Homag China to showcase their “Threespine” click furniture technology at “Interzum Guangzhou” 2021.

The collaboration comes as a result of a deeper partnership between the companies driven by a growth in demand for the revolutionary click furniture technology — leading to Homag integrating standard “Threespine” solutions into their existing product range.

“Threespine” is a revolution for the industry, omnichannel retailers, and consumers — enabling a total rethink in how furniture is produced, transported, stored, and sold — with cost and space savings at every step of the supply chain. The technology is suitable for any manufacturer and all types of materials — from flatpack to fine furniture, to fully-fitted kitchens.

“Our continuous and strengthened collaboration with major machine manufacturers globally is yet another confirmation of the relevance that ‘Threespine’ — click furniture technology, has to the consumers, retailers, and manufacturers alike, adjusting to the changing retail landscape,” says Jonas Banestig, Senior Key Account Manager Furniture Technology, Välinge Innovation. “We are proud to see our technology utilised in Homag’s standard solutions — further strengthening the business opportunities for the furniture industry.”

Patent “Digital Embossing” remains in force

The Hymmen company recently announced that one of the patents from the Hymmen patent portfolio, which deals with digital structure printing, was upheld by the decision of the Opposition Division of the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich on 10 March 2021.

In this case, the EPO had to decide on the oppositions filed by Barbéran, Cefla and Giorgio Macor against one of Hymmen’s patents – in this case the patent “DLE Digital Lacquer Embossing” with patent number EP 3 109 056. This patent has been in force since 14 February 2018. The subject matter of the patent includes a method for producing a structure on a surface of a flat workpiece and an apparatus for carrying out this method.

In the decision, the EPO Opposition Division upheld the above-mentioned Hymmen patent with slightly amended text stating that the claimed process must be a structure that is synchronous with the underlying decor. As the vast majority of digital decors and digital structure prints produced to date are synchronous, this is judged by Hymmen to be a minor change in the patent claims and will not diminish the importance of this patent in the field of digital structure printing.

“We are very pleased that the opposition division of the EPO essentially followed our arguments regarding novelty, inventive step and applicability of the main patent claims and upheld the patent with the above details. This is particularly important for Hymmen, as the German part of the above-mentioned DLE patent EP 3 109 056 is one of the two current patents on the basis of which Hymmen is pursuing patent infringement claims against Barberán before the Düsseldorf Regional Court, which were filed on 14 April 2020 (Düsseldorf Regional Court, file number 4b O 26/20),” it says from Bielefeld (see mf.com of 19 June 2020). The patent infringement proceedings are to continue as planned. “It is important to us to protect our know-how and that of our business partners with our Hymmen patent portfolio,” affirms the Hymmen management.

Guararapes orders new plant for MDF production

The convincing overall performance of Siempelkamp’s No. 1 plant leads to a “remake” of the successful concept: Once again, the Brazilian wood-based materials producer Guararapes Paineis, S/A. placed an order for an MDF plant with its German partner.

Top availability and low production costs – Guararapes, one of the most important MDF producers in South America, is fully satisfied with the performance of its first Siempelkamp plant. For its Caçador location, the company therefore currently ordered an almost identical copy of its successfully operating existing plant. Guararapes thus represents the largest MDF site in America.

The core component is a “Contiroll” Generation 9 for MDF in the 9′ x 48.7m format. The daily capacity of the plant is designed for 1,500 m³ and thus exceeds that of the first Siempelkamp plant, which was ordered in 2014 and started up in 2016, by 400 m³. The scope of supply for Guararapes includes all components from the debarking and chipper line to the packing line. Also included is the “Ecoresinator” glue blending system for MDF, which convinces with high glue savings and low operating costs.

The expanded production range of the company, founded in 1984, will be supplied mainly to the domestic market, but also to export markets. Assembly in Caçador is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2022.

“The overall performance of our first Siempelkamp plant is absolutely convincing. So there is no question that we will realize the new investment again with our German partner,” says Ricardo Pedroso, CEO of Guararapes Paineis, S/A. Jürgen Philipps, Spokesman of the Management Board of Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH, adds: “We are proud to be able to support our Brazilian customer with the increase of its production capacities through another plant and are looking forward to the upcoming cooperation.”

Strongly strengthens the area of technology, standardisation and research

Since the beginning of March, Dr. Dan Talpeanu and Roger Starke jointly head the Technology, Research and Standardisation Department of the VDMA Woodworking Machinery Association. Together they succeeded Dr Eckhard Licher, who retired at the end of last year.

“With this double staffing, projects for the internationalisation of standards for machine safety on woodworking machines will be consistently implemented and expanded by the association. Simultaneously, topics such as OPC UA or ETML will be vigorously pushed forward for the woodworking machine construction,” said Dr Bernhard Dirr, Managing Director of the VDMA Woodworking Machinery.

Dr Talpeanu, who was already appointed to the VDMA Association since the end of 2019, is responsible for the areas of technical representation and research. The mechanical engineer earned his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart. Prior to this, he worked for three years at the power tool manufacturer HILTI as a technical project manager. Before this, he was head of the wood and composite material machining research group at the Institute for Machine Tools at the University of Stuttgart.

Roger Starke, who has been technical advisor at VDMA since 2006, has extensive experience in the fields of standardisation on DIN, CEN and ISO level. Parallel to this, he will be responsible for standardisation activities in the field of printing and paper technology. He studied mechanical engineering and printing technology at the Technical University of Chemnitz and worked in the printing industry before joining the VDMA. In the fields of standardisation on machine safety, the Association organises the work of the German mirror committee NA 060-06-01 “Woodworking machines – Safety” and, together with experts from the member companies, represents the interests at the corresponding European and international committees CEN/TC 142 and ISO/TC 39/SC4.

“Dr. Eckhard Licher, who for decades headed the technical division of VDMA Woodworking Machinery, deserves great thanks for his achievements!” said Dirr.

Schattdecor

New building at headquarters in Thansau

Schattdecor started the planned new building at the headquarters of the globally active decor printer in Thansau in March 2021. In two years of planned construction, a four-storey office building is to be built on 1,800 square metres, connected to the current existing building, by the second quarter of 2023.

Roland Auer, CEO of Schattdecor AG: “We are consciously investing in growth. We believe in the heart of the group, the Thansau headquarters. Through the expansion, we are creating space for the future and progress.”

Where capacity limits are reached, the newly created space will allow for an equalisation and spatially sensible restructuring. In addition, space is also planned for Retis Holding and the board of Schattdecor AG. Auer: “As a family-owned company, we benefit from a strong owner family, which will also find its physical home at the headquarters in the future. A strong and positive sign for our entire team.”

True to its corporate culture, the local medium-sized company attaches great importance to building as much as possible in harmony with people and nature and, accordingly, with the least possible impact.

Claus Neuffer, Head of Engineering: “We decided to build where our project would have the least impact on local residents and nature. In addition, together with an architect’s office, we have designed a concept to create natural compensation areas, for example in the form of extensive roof greening. The existing trees will also be retained and merely relocated. Later, they will become part of a large fruit and flower meadow.”

The coatings industry under pressure due to developments in the market of raw materials

The European paint, printing inks and artists’ colours industry is under increased pressure due to rising raw materials prices. A complex mix of demand, capacity issues and scarce transportation resources of key raw materials is enhancing uncertainty in the supply chain. Despite the enormous impact for the industry, the coatings industry is striving to reduce risks to customers.

“After a year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, our industry faces serious challenges again in 2021 due to the rise in raw material prices”, said André Vieira de Castro, Chairman of CEPE. There are several reasons for the increase, namely increasing demand for raw materials due to the anticipated economic recovery, a shortage of raw materials available due to bad weather conditions and the closing of several plants causing suppliers of raw materials to invoke force majeure. In addition, transportation costs are on the rise resulting from the sharp increase in oil prices. André Vieira de Castro pursued “The burden for the industry is immense, as raw material prices account for more than half of the cost. Since January last year, costs for key components like epoxy resins have risen by 60 percent in Europe. The situation is similar for solvents, where the price of acetone and n-butyl acetate alone rose by 123% and 91% respectively.”

The current situation stems from Europe and Asia and especially the unexpected rapid V-shaped recovery in China which is fuelling demand for essential raw materials. Next to epoxy resins, the list of highly demanded petrochemical raw materials includes inter alia polyester resins, polypropylene glycols, acrylic acids, acrylic resin, UV resins, polyurethane resins, and solvents. In parallel to petrochemical raw materials, global pigment raw material costs (including titanium dioxide, red and yellow iron oxide) have also seen sharp increases. Key drivers for the increases include high demand across all industries, greater domestic supply requirements in producing countries, generic supply and demand imbalances and higher pigment component costs.

The situation is exacerbated by capacity issues. Disruptions at producers in Asia and Europe – either due to factory closures or plant accidents – have significantly tightened supply. Another cost factor are scarce transportation resources. The COVID-19 pandemic led to erratic demands for international trade which affected the shipping container movements. The current global shortage of containers in the right places has led to a sharp increase in transportation costs: prices of containers between China and Europe have risen more than 400% since Q4 2020.

While the coatings industry seeks to cope as much as possible with the current uncertainties, the world market pressure should give European decision-makers pause for thought. “Increased sustainability is undeniably the way forward, but global competition should not be ignored in the measures of the EU Green Deal. It is essential for Europe to have a strong chemicals industry with factories based in Europe in order to be more self-sufficient, otherwise it is the European economy as a whole which is under threat” concluded André Vieira de Castro.

Preparations for “Domotex Digital Days” in full swing

“Domotex” 2021 will be held this year from 19 – 21 May as a digital-only event due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The “Domotex Digital Days” consist of a live conference programme on 20 May, which will address current and trendsetting topics in the international floor coverings industry. The live programme is framed by two days of business dating, networking and exchange for participants. This year’s “Domotex” thus offers an alternative, digital trade platform that is open to all participants for three days. Nine weeks prior to its launch the event is looking at a positive registration. Exhibitors and long-standing partners such as Ipek – A. Ipektchi, Battilossi and Theo Keller from the handmade carpets segment, as well as Neuhofer Holz and Unilin Technologies will be there.

“The ‘Domotex Digital Days’ are a meeting point for the international community, offer business dating and live chats among all participants and much more. Participants can already look forward to this digital event and its exciting conference programme. Including all the latest developments and trends, feature programming will focus especially on the three subject areas future of retail, future trends in interior flooring, and sustainability and healthy living,” says Sonia Wedell-Castellano, Global Director DOMOTEX, Deutsche Messe. She further states: “’Domotex’ last took place in January 2020. Since then, the world has been preoccupied with the effects of the pandemic and trade fairs can no longer take place as usual. With the Domotex Digital Days, we provide a virtual platform to the carpet and flooring industry for exchanging ideas, offering networking opportunities and the chance to showcase product innovations to an international audience. The Domotex Digital Days can certainly not replace the DOMOTEX trade show experience but offer a great way of staying in touch with the flooring community virtually until we meet again in January 2022.”

Participating companies welcome the virtual platform, which offers them the opportunity to stay in touch with the industry, present products and innovations and make new contacts on the customer and partner side despite current travel restrictions. “We are very much looking forward to the Domotex Digital Days. Direct and personal exchange within the scope of an on-site trade show is of course not comparable to maintaining digital contacts. However, in times like these, it is important to break new ground. We are pleased that the show can take place in any form at all. Since there is the possibility of a live presentation, we can make our innovations and our vision 2025 accessible to a broad audience.” confirms Franz Neuhofer, owner and managing director of Neuhofer Holz GmbH.

“We are thrilled that the ‘Domotex’ is once again offering a platform to reach out to the entire flooring industry. Of course, it is nice to meet in person, but that doesn’t stop us from planning to introduce some new technologies during the event, as well as taking part in many video meetings with licensees, buyers, importers and distributors from around the world. Our team is looking forward to exploring the benefits of full digitization this time round.” says Floris Koopmans, Business Development Manager IP at Unilin Technologies.

The live conference programme includes lectures, panel discussions as well as product and innovation presentations with live discussions, top-class speakers and experts from the world of floor coverings. In addition to the three subtopics of the keynote theme “Cover New Ground Balanced Living”, “Sustainable Living” and “More than Floor”, the focus will primarily be on future trends in retail. Under the title “The Future of Retail – Lessons learned in the crisis”, topics such as the digitization of brick-and-mortar retail will be addressed; the pros and cons of digitization in the flooring industry will be examined. Experts and trend researchers will provide answers to current questions in the interior flooring sector such as “What comes next after the current trend of cocooning?”, “What impact will Corona have on the flooring industry?”, “Are the craftsmen the big winners of the pandemic?” and many more.

The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing trade fair organizers to rethink. Due to travel and contact restrictions, numerous trade shows over the past year have been held exclusively digitally. Trade show organizers are responding to the popular demand of the markets to offer alternative business and trading platforms, despite all the restrictions. With the “Domotex Digital Days”, Deutsche Messe offers such an alternative platform and at the same time makes a contribution to the increasing importance of online channels in the flooring industry as well.

“Domotex” 2021 will take place as a digital-only event from 19 – 21 May 2021. The next “Domotex” is planned as a hybrid event from 13 – 16 January 2022 at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds.
