German machinery manufacturers aim to expand strongly in the USA

The USA is not only the largest single export market for machinery and plant manufacturers from Germany. Many companies also have a strong presence in the United States and are planning to expand it. A recent survey in which around 350 VDMA member companies took part shows that around a third of them already manufacture in the USA. Three quarters of all respondents intend to expand business activities in the U.S. this year and in the coming year. Around two-thirds of them want to strengthen their own service and sales, 37 percent are planning to expand their production, and 18 percent also want to expand design and development in the USA. According to the survey, two-thirds of the companies plan to increase their local workforces for this purpose. Currently, German engineering companies employ an estimated more than 100,000 people in the United States.

“The United States has long been a market of tremendous importance for engineering companies from Germany and Europe. Both the size of the market and its growth prospects, as well as increasing geopolitical tensions, make it attractive to have a direct local presence,” VDMA President Karl Haeusgen said during talks with U.S. congressmen and decision-makers from the Biden administration in Washington.

The expansion plans are also accompanied by expectations of rising sales. A good 40 percent of the companies surveyed expect a nominal increase of more than 10 percent in their U.S. business in 2022, and another good 40 percent expect growth of up to 10 percent. Expectations for the coming year are similar: 37 percent of the companies anticipate a further nominal increase in sales of more than 10 percent, while 48 percent expect growth of up to 10 percent.

Current figures from the U.S. Department of Commerce on foreign direct investment also show how important the U.S. is for German industry as a whole. According to these, the total volume of German direct investment in the U.S. reached the sum of $636 billion at the end of 2021 – an increase of 21 percent compared to the value at the end of 2020. In the ranking of the most important investors, Germany has thus moved past Canada into second place, while Japan remains the frontrunner. Companies from Germany employ an estimated one million people in the United States.

In the survey, mechanical engineering companies cited market size (86 percent) as the most important reason for expanding in the United States. 64 percent of the companies want to invest in the U.S. because they expect market growth there, 55 percent emphasize proximity to customers. As many as 16 percent want to circumvent so-called “buy American” clauses, i.e., trade hurdles that are intended to force local production in the U.S. in some cases for government-funded infrastructure projects. “Trade barriers have unfortunately increased on the U.S. side toward Europe in recent years. This is hurting companies on both sides of the Atlantic. Both European machinery manufacturers and their U.S. customers would benefit if industrial tariffs were eliminated, conformity assessments were mutually recognized and, above all, no further trade barriers were erected,” Haeusgen emphasized.

Robot installations in China grew by 44 percent

The industrial robotics market in China achieved strong growth with a new record of 243,300 installations in 2021 – a rise of 44 percent compared to the previous year. These preliminary data have been published by the International Federation of Robotics.

“China was leading the global recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic and accounted for half of worldwide robot installations in 2021,” said Marina Bill, President of the International Federation of Robotics. “Growth is strong across all industries with electrical and electronics being the dominant sector – up 30 percent to 81,600 installations. The automotive industry also showed a strong recovery. This was mainly driven by electric vehicle manufacturing in China. It rose by 89% in 2021 with 50,700 installations.”

Chinese government supports robotic automation

In China aging population’s demographics causes shortage of labor and drives the growth of robotic automation. The continued robotization of industries has been announced earlier this year by the government. The Five-Year plan for the robotics industry, released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in Beijing, focuses on promoting innovation – making China a global leader of robot technology and industrial advancement.

New profession: “robotics engineering technician”

At the same time, state authorities aim to boost employment and entrepreneurial opportunities among college graduates. In June, 18 new professions including “robotics engineering technician” were announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. The profession focuses on the research and development of control algorithms and operating systems for robots, as well as the use of digital simulation technology.

“China still has high potential for further growth,” said Marina Bill. “The country´s robot density in the manufacturing industry amounts to 246 industrial robots per 10,000 employees thus ranking ninth worldwide in 2020. Ten years ago China´s robot density was 15 units only.”

Surface Competence Center now newly equipped

To achieve optimal results in furniture and wood painting, many professionals from industry and trade have already used Croma Lacke’s Surface Competence Center. “Since opening in 2018, our consulting center has recorded more than two hundred successful test runs on the latest automated painting systems. With this solution-oriented customer service, paint systems can be specifically configured for efficient application technologies. Customization results in outstanding application solutions,” comments Alexander Kollat, Managing Director of IVM Chemicals GmbH in Herrenberg.

Now, at the start of a new, close cooperation with the renowned Italian coating machine manufacturer Makor, the equipment will be supplemented by further new system technologies. “We are pleased that we now have a German partner for the presentation of our equipment. This cooperation makes the paths much shorter and more efficient,” says Dr. Ing. Carlo Dolciami, Sales and Marketing Manager at Makor.

For the application-oriented live presentations, the Surface Competence Center now features Makor’s latest “S-One” automatic surface spraying machine with extensive equipment. This includes glass detection, small-volume container, gun sets in air-atomizing, airless and airmix as well as Kremlin pumps and application technology. In addition, a further expansion stage is being planned.

In combination with the Makor “Fastdry” drying channel and the Makor “Ultradry” UV dryer, all commercially available coating systems of waterborne 1K, 2K and UV coatings can be applied with this machine. Of course, this also applies to solvent-based systems.

Numerous application machines are available in the technical center for simulating a wide variety of surfaces.  These include a 2-belt cylinder sander from SCM, roller application machine with smooth and grooved roller, trowel machine and “Floory” oil line with distributor unit for brushing and padding, and a UV dryer from Makor. Also two roller applicators, optionally with textured roller or sponge rubber rollers and distributor brushes for pickling, as well as a gravure printing unit with two printing rollers from Bürkle. This equipment enables IVM Chemicals to reproduce almost any application form for wood finishing in real terms.

The Croma Lacke brand offers a high level of consulting expertise on site in Herrenberg.  Under the guidance of technical specialists, the paint and coating components of the innovative material systems can be tested on the latest coating machines. This allows efficient production of finishes in accordance with the current VOC guidelines to be tested here under realistic conditions. Every dryer situation can also be simulated, so complete test runs are possible. This has the advantage that no time is lost for adjustments during production. Furthermore, Makor’s technical center in Sinalunga, Italy, is also available to any interested party.

SSI Schaefer

Publishes first Sustainability Report to international GRI standards and defines specific action areas

The SSI Schaefer Group, a Germany-based family-owned company established more than 85 years ago and a leading international solution provider of modular storage and logistics systems, today published its first Sustainability Report. The report was prepared on the basis of the internationally recognized standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The company thus implements its 2023 SSI Strategy Roadmap, which defines sustainability as one of six focus topics.

Sustainability has two dimensions for SSI Schaefer, i.e. responsible operation along its own value chain and promoting the sustainability of its customers by offering them innovative and future-proof technologies.

“Our first Sustainability Report is intended to give our stakeholders an insight into the sustainable initiatives, projects and solutions we are pursuing already today, our major challenges in the relevant action areas in the coming years, and how we plan to master them,” says Steffen Bersch, CEO of the SSI Schaefer Group. “As the backbone of the globally growing e-commerce industry, we can help our customers make their material flow even more efficient and sustainable by offering them intelligent intralogistics solutions.”

Based on a comprehensive analysis of its business environment, which also involved the main stakeholders of the group of companies, SSI Schaefer has defined four action areas in accordance with its corporate strategy:

  1. Value-oriented corporate culture as a foundation for the dealings with stakeholders and resources
  2. Using intelligent processes to create innovative and sustainable solutions for customers
  3. Responsible management by reducing impacts along the own value chain
  4. Sustainability management as a strategic factor (process-oriented action area)

In each action area, SSI Schaefer has set itself specific goals based on measurable performance indicators or initiatives with clearly defined deadlines. This is to make the process as transparent as possible to all stakeholders. The report covers the entire basis of consolidation and, as a first step, records the performance indicators of the 18 largest entities, which represent more than 80% of revenues.

Specific goals defined with regard to a value-oriented corporate culture include, for instance, the development of a strategic EHS (environment, health and safety) management system or the definition of global KPIs for the Group’s safety performance. A strategic goal in the field of product development is to reduce the share of pneumatic products of selected product ranges, which are not very energy-efficient, to 5%. With regard to the value chain, SSI Schaefer wants to base its supplier management much more strongly on sustainability criteria; by 2023, at least 50% of the top 100 suppliers are to be subjected to sustainability audits.

As far as the Group’s carbon footprint is concerned, the calculation for the 18 largest entities is underway (Scope 1 & 2), with the aim of publishing a carbon/climate strategy for the SSI Schaefer Group by the end of 2022.

To implement the topics in the Group, SSI Schaefer has installed a Global Sustainability Council (GSC) led by Heiko Stötzel, Head of Group Social Responsibility & HSE, which coordinates control and target tracking across business units, regions and Group functions.

“Unlike large capital market-oriented corporations, our Group is not yet obliged to publish sustainability reports but does so voluntarily,” Steffen Bersch adds. “But to us, this is more than just complying with legal requirements. As a globally active group of companies, we want to show the way forward, live up to our social responsibility and continuously increase our contribution to achieving the climate targets as well as the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This is why we joined the ‘50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders’ initiative back in 2020 as the first member of the intralogistics industry.”
