Joint research for the recycling of MDF

Dieffenbacher and 19 organizations from seven countries have joined forces in the “EcoReFibre” (Ecological solutions for recovery of secondary materials from post-consumer fibreboards) research project to make the production of wood fiberboard such as MDF and HDF (medium-density and high-density fiberboard) more sustainable. The aim of the project is to recycle wood fibers at the end of their life cycle and use them to produce new fiberboard. Currently, fresh wood is used almost exclusively to produce wood fiberboard.

The four-year project, which kicked off in May, has 12 million euros in funding from the European Union through its research and innovation funding program Horizon Europe. The project partners, which include wood-based panel manufacturers Homanit and Sonae Arauco, intend to develop and test solutions that will enable up to 25% of the fresh wood fibers used to manufacture wood fiberboards to be replaced by recycled secondary fibers. Five pilot projects will also explore how recycled wood fibers can be used to manufacture new end products such as insulation materials and biocomposites.

“More than 100 million cubic meters of wood fiberboard are produced worldwide every year—almost exclusively from fresh wood. The industry urgently needs a sustainable recycling solution here,” explains Dr. Matthias Graf, who is leading the project at Dieffenbacher. “With the innovative technologies and business models that we’ll develop as part of the ,EcoReFibre’ project, we’ll take the circular economy in the MDF/HDF industry a big step forward,” he says.

Dieffenbacher has a longstanding commitment to sustainability and preserving fresh wood resources in Europe. The company is a leader in producing equipment that uses waste wood as a raw material in the production of particleboard. The company’s Recycling business unit has supplied numerous waste wood cleaning and wood recycling plants to particleboard manufacturers such as Unilin, Pfleiderer, Rheinspan and Fundermax.

“EcoReFibre” was launched in May with a meeting at the consortium leader, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala. The project will end in April 2026.

Strengthens its patent portfolio for waterproof coating technologies

Unilin Technologies, the IP division of Mohawk Industries, is thrilled to announce that they are expanding their patent portfolio on waterproof edge-coatings for MDF and HDF based boards. An additional US patent has been granted on the 18th of October 2022, which will expand the already substantial US and European patent portfolio.

Unilin’s patent portfolio is the consequence of the early and highly dedicated R&D program that resulted in strong patents with priority dates as of 2015. The newly granted US Patent US 11,473,315, which protects the impregnation of MDF/HDF based boards with different types of coating, is Unilin’s second US patent for waterproof coatings after US 10,655,338.

The US patents are following in the footsteps of the European patents that have already been granted. Floris Koopmans, Sales Director at Unilin Technologies, comments: “We have a strong patent portfolio on waterproof coatings and we see that wood and laminate manufacturers all over the world are interested in making their products more resistant to water. With this new patent we hope to further inform the industry about the existing broad patent portfolio in this area of expertise.”

Unilin licenses out their own waterproof edge-coating solution under the name Unicoat, in partnership with machine supplier Schiele Machinebau GmbH (see news from 26 January 2022). “Unicoat outperforms other waterproof coatings in the market today,” states Floris Koopmans. “Unicoat not only prevents swelling, it also ensures a sealed surface that prevents water from penetrating between the joints. Unicoat has proven to prevent leaks, swelling and discoloration of the floors for over a week, even after extensive testing with standing water.”

3rd Customer Symposium in Turkey

To be where the customers are – and from October 20 to 21, 2022 that was at Siempelkamp in Istanbul. There, Team Siempelkamp, consisting of Siempelkamp Logistics and Service (SLS), Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau, and the subsidiaries Büttner and Pallmann, invited to a 2-day symposium. The focus was to exchange ideas with the Turkish customers and their technical teams on site and to present the latest developments, trends, and services to them. The interest and enthusiasm of the more than 120 participants was great.

Faruk Şişci, General Manager of Siempelkamp’s Turkish representative office, summed up: “This was an excellent event which our customers followed with great interest in all presentations. Siempelkamp has very many friends in Turkey. We will be happy to repeat this symposium in the future!”

Last but not least, the perfect organization of the event, carried out by the Siempelkamp representative office Turkey around Faruk Şişci, contributed to the success of this symposium. Their team had chosen the Green Park Pendik Hotel & Convention Center as an ideal venue and provided a varied supporting program. Thus, in addition to the informative part of the symposium, exchange and entertainment were not neglected. The next opportunity for this occured already a few days later: At the Intermob Istanbul 2022 the Siempelkamp experts and the Turkish Siempelkamp customers could further deepen the topics of the symposium.

Underlines corporate philosophy with new logo

The Biesse Group is giving itself “a new face” and launching a new identity in the form of completely redesigned logos. “We’ve been around since 1969 – and we’ve been constantly evolving since then,” explains Biesse Group Marketing Manager Raphaël Prati during an online press conference today. “Very early on, we had the goal of selling our machines worldwide. In the meantime, we see ourselves as ‘international natives’ with offices worldwide and an effort not only to be directly on site with the customer, but also to bring the global cultures of our employees and customers to the Italian headquarters. Our mission is to offer the best possible solution to our customers all over the world and for every material. To do this, we can very often adapt solutions from certain materials to others, but over decades we have also become specialists in certain materials. We reflect all this with new logos. On the one hand for the entire company, but on the other hand also for the individual materials,” says Prati. “The logos are intended to signal flexibility and stability, as well as to provide a clear direction.”

The starting signal for making the new pictograms known worldwide is now. It will be many months before they can be found everywhere and the machine design also shows just that. “When a chocolate bar gets a new layout, the new look can be found in every store worldwide after about 45 days. In our case, the whole thing will probably take up to 24 months,” Prati is realistic. And he is nevertheless pleased about this way of the Biesse Group to visualize its self-image.

“New Array” – the theme of 2022-2023 Automotive Color Trends collection

Each year, designers for BASF’s Coatings division create a new collection to inspire automotive designers around the globe. The 2022-2023 collection is called “New Array”, providing innovative shades with an increasing focus on sustainability and functionality, while still moving into new and exciting color spaces.

The collection title “New Array” refers to the thoughtful process of ordering values and responding to new needs. Think of it like being on an escalator. It’s a mode of transportation that does not belong to the previous nor the next level, taking the rider to a liminal space in-between. This collection immerses itself in that space to look forward at the future of mobility.

The colors of Europe, Middle East and Africa reach high chromaticity with spectacular new pigments – enabling beautiful and intense new shades. The darker tones are fine and smooth. Neutral color shades play with a virtual look by adding subtle color information. Effects are there to support the idea and visual impression.

“Overall, identity is shown not only through uniqueness, but also in the ability to subtly extend the already unique character of diverse color positions or effects,” said Mark Gutjahr, head of Automotive Color Design, EMEA.

Standing in a liminal space, the colors of Asia Pacific bring us comfort, happiness, spice, and solutions reflecting human individuality, which is expanding and gaining importance. They show people how to live gently and vividly with their own narratives.

“AP’s colors shape a positive and realistic future. They draw your own story allowing you to align with your colorful identity away from the social pressures,” said Chiharu Matsuhara, head of Automotive Design for AP.

Society is grappling with its directional pull, whether to move in a radically different aesthetic without losing touch with sophisticated appearance and compelling effects. Visions of progress emanate through the Americas colors with depth, texture, and compatibility. Expressions of natural and simplified options beckon both individuals and communities to embrace liminal spaces.

“Dealing with a plethora of emotions and conditions associated with both individual and communal identities, one may find solace and acceptance beyond the typical confines of tangible life,” said Liz Hoffman, head of Automotive Design for the Americas. “Moving through the liminal uncertainty may ultimately provide grounding and opportunities to see into the future.”

Every year, the designers of BASF’s Coatings division study future trends which they use as foundation for the development of surface, texture and color positions. They draw inspiration from industry, fashion, consumer products, nature, technology, and more. This research is shared with BASF’s customers, the automotive designers, to drive future mass production plans.

Starts wood fiber insulation board production on new Dieffenbacher plant after less than one year of construction time

A complete wood fiber insulation board (WFIB) plant provided by Eppingen-based Dieffenbacher for Bavarian Ziegler Group’s Grafenwöhr site is up and running less than one year after construction began. The line for rigid WFIB began production on August 30, 2022. Ziegler Group placed its order with Dieffenbacher on April 1, 2021. Despite a change of location at short notice from Bärnau, 50 km west to Grafenwöhr, construction of the new plant began just five months later, on September 1, 2021.

“We are very pleased that our new Dieffenbacher WFIB plant had such a rapid and successful start,” explains Andreas Sandner, Commercial Managing Director at Ziegler Group. Dieffenbacher’s scope of supply for the complete plant included a fiber dryer, “EVOjet M 2.0” gluing system, the forming station and forming line with prepress, a “CSS Continuous Steam Press System”, the raw board handling system, electrics and automation and the “MyDieffenbacher” digital service platform.

“We never would have been able to achieve this record-breaking construction and completion time without the full cooperation of our partners, in this case, especially Dieffenbacher. The change of location and the procurement crisis during the pandemic made this feat all the more remarkable,” says Sandner. “Our thanks go to the entire Dieffenbacher team, which overcame huge challenges to meet our requirements for product quality and energy efficiency.”

In addition to the WFIB plant just completed, Ziegler Group commissioned Dieffenbacher to supply another fiber dryer for flexible insulation mat production at the Grafenwöhr site. Construction began in June. The 10-tonne-per-hour capacity dryer is scheduled to go into operation in October 2022.

Just over 25,000 visitors on four days of the fair

Here they are at last, the official figures for the “International Woodworking Fair” (“IWF”) 2022, held August 23-26 at the “Georgia World Congress Center” (GWCC) in Atlanta: North America’s largest woodworking trade show and conference, exhibits occupied a total of 663,000 square feet of exhibit space in the three GWCC buildings, A, B and C, totaling 1.2 million square feet of space. Included were more than 900 exhibitors offering machinery, accessories and services in more than 540 product categories.

After a Corona-related four-year hiatus, the 2022 show registered a total of 25,524 visitors from every U.S. state, the District of Columbia, and 92 other countries and provinces. Amazingly, 48 percent of attendees traveled to Atlanta for the first time to attend “IWF.” A clear indication that much has changed in the industry in recent years.

Highlights of the “IWF” were certainly the announcement of the winners of the “IWF Challenger Award” on August 23. Bacci America, Biesse America, Felder Group USA, Northtech Machine, Salice, Cameron Automation and Topp Line ultimately emerged victorious from the 86 entries. A jury of experts had previously named 20 finalists from which the winners were chosen. The first “Night At The Tabernacle” on Wednesday was also very well received by exhibitors and participants at the show. 1,000 visitors enjoyed this “IWF” party, the largest single event in the history of the show to date.
