Celebrates 100th birthday

On September 23, 2022, Kardex Mlog will not be presenting any further developments in intralogistics for a change. Instead, the company based in Neuenstadt am Kocher will be celebrating its 100th birthday. For this anniversary, all current and many former employees are invited to review together the unique and long-standing success story. At the Küffnerhof conference and seminar center in Langenbrettach-Neudeck, a varied supporting program awaits the approximately 400 guests.

“At Kardex Mlog, we normally deal with current customer challenges and future-oriented solutions. For the company’s 100th anniversary, we allow ourselves to take a look at the past. There we see the history of intralogistics, which we have helped to shape from the very beginning and which we have shaped to this day through many ideas, developments and patents,” explains Hans-Jürgen Heitzer, Head of Division Kardex Mlog.

The story begins in 1922 with the founding of the steel construction company Erwin Mehne. While the company initially concentrated on the construction of steel structures, bridges, containers, buildings and halls, departments for crane construction, mechanical engineering and materials handling technology were established in the 1960s. In 1966, the first order for five order pickers followed for the central spare parts warehouse of the then Fiat Automobil AG in Heilbronn. As early as 1968, the first automatic high-bay warehouse (HRL) in silo design with a height of 25.8 m was built – a technological milestone with a rail- and floor-guided storage and retrieval unit (SRU) developed in-house. The solution worked much more precisely than the top-guided stacker cranes that had been common until then.

In the 1970s, Erwin Mehne made a name for itself as a general contractor and several more high-bay warehouses were built. The highlight of this era was the automatic high-bay warehouse with conveyor technology and order-picking area developed and manufactured in-house for Vereinigte Papierfabriken in Feuchtwangen in 1974.

The 1980s were characterized by the introduction of programmable logic controllers (PLC), which were first used at Erwin Mehne in 1981 in a fully automatic HRL for Daimler.

In 1989, the company merged with Man Lager- und Systemtechnik, founded in 1974, and Wolffkran. As a subsidiary of Man GHH based in Oberhausen, the company name was changed to Man GHH Logistics GmbH. By then, 60 high-bay warehouses and 630 stacker cranes had already been built. In 1997, Man GGH Logistics became Man Logistics GmbH, which developed into one of the leading suppliers of conveyor and material flow technology components, systems and complete solutions.

The name MLog Logistics was created in 2005 as a result of a management buy-out. The headquarters of MLog became Neuenstadt am Kocher in 2009.

The takeover of MLog Logistics by the Kardex Group in 2010 opened up completely new perspectives for the intralogistics pioneer. Under the umbrella of the globally operating parent company, new markets could be opened up and further investments made in the home territory. Internationalization also made great strides, leading to the establishment of a Polish site in Sopot in 2021. In addition, Kardex Mlog strengthened its position as a supplier of complete systems comprising hardware and software. The “Kardex Control Center” warehouse management system developed in-house was expanded to include new modules and now covers all functional areas from material flow computers to plant visualization.

On the hardware side, too, Kardex Mlog remained true to its reputation as an innovation leader: In 2010, for example, the company presented the Kardex “MDynamic” small parts SRM system. In 2014, the Kardex “MMove” wireless pallet shuttle and the Kardex “MSpacer” load handling device were launched. With the now patented fork for stacker cranes, the second row is also used at full height in double-deep storage. This results in a space gain of over 1,800 mm per aisle in a 20-meter-high warehouse. In 2017, Kardex Mlog built the highest HRL in the company’s history so far in Wronki, with a height of 45.3 m, for the Polish manufacturer of household appliances Amica.

And today – after a 100-year development history – Kardex Mlog can look back on over 1,000 completed projects as a provider of integrated material handling systems and high-bay warehouses.

Cyber attack on subsidiary in China

A Chinese production company of Hettich has become a victim of a cyber attack through no fault of its own. As yet unknown perpetrators have penetrated the internal networks and deposited malware there.

The IT specialists of the Hettich Group, supported by external experts, are working around the clock to successfully fend off the attack and supplement the security measures of the systems. It is not yet possible to say when the Chinese subsidiary will be able to fully access all IT systems again.

Local production in China will continue. According to current knowledge, other companies of the Hettich Group are not affected. From today’s perspective, the ability to deliver to customers outside China is not restricted.

Endowed professorship for digital transformation

The University of Applied Sciences Vorarlberg (FHV – Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences) is establishing a new research group for Digital Business Transformation supported by Blum as part of a cooperation. This is to be successively expanded over the next few years. Gerhard Humpeler, Managing Director of Julius Blum GmbH, and Stefan Fitz-Rankl, FHV Managing Director, signed a cooperation agreement in the presence of State Councilor Marco Tittler and FHV Head of Research Markus Preißinger, which includes the establishment of a Blum Endowed Professorship at the FHV. The Blum Endowed Professorship is a high-caliber impulse generator and will in the future fulfill an important interface function between students, researchers, companies and the general public. The common goal is to further strengthen and expand the business and research location in the state. Plans call for the establishment of a separate endowed professorship as well as the appointment of several scientific staff members for the area.

“The closer connection between research and teaching brings direct benefits to the economy in the state. In Vorarlberg, there is a need not only for applied research in cooperation with local industry, but also for needs-based, industry-oriented and forward-looking training of skilled workers,” explains Gerhard Humpeler. “We take a holistic, interdisciplinary approach that covers business, technology, design and social issues.” Future skilled workers will be able to use the new knowledge specifically in the development of digitization strategies for Vorarlberg’s companies. In parallel, the development of expertise in digitization will also promote an understanding of STEM in the state and relevant studies on current topics will be developed. The endowed professorship will be firmly anchored in the Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science – Digital Innovation as well as the Master’s degree program in Business Informatics – Digital Transformation.

“We need specialists at all levels, today and in the future. By establishing the interdisciplinary endowed professorship, we are supporting the relevant training of bachelor’s and master’s students. Through intensive research activity on digitization in the four UAS departments, we are also creating an attractive environment for doctoral students. This forward-looking institution will also lead to more students and researchers coming to the state and taking an interest in the companies in our region,” Klaus Wendel, Head of Information Services and Organization at Blum, is convinced.

FHV Managing Director Fitz-Rankl emphasizes: “The research of our University of Applied Sciences is the strongest driver of inter-company research in Vorarlberg. The cooperation with Blum helps us to further expand inter-company research for the companies in the state and also to further increase the R&D quota in the state. In this way, we are creating fertile ground for innovations in digitization and providing impetus for the region.”

Earns Great Place to Work Certification

Rehau is proud to announce that seven countries operating within its Americas region individually achieved Great Place to Work Certification. The prestigious award is based entirely on what current employees say about their workplace experience in the Great Place to Work global employee survey platform.

Rehau companies in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and the United States earned the certification for the first time in 2022. Colombia became the first Great Place to Work-Certified™ country in the Rehau Group worldwide in 2021 and earned re-certification in 2022. While the company’s employees in Peru were included in the overall survey results, operations there do not meet the minimum size for country certification.

Great Place to Work® is the global authority on workplace culture, employee experience and the leadership behaviors proven to deliver market-leading revenue, employee retention and increased innovation. This global recognition considers the extent to which employees trust leaders, the respect with which people are treated, the fairness of workplace decisions, and the feelings of pride and camaraderie among team members.

“Great Place to Work Certification isn’t something that comes easily – it takes ongoing dedication to the employee experience,” said Sarah Lewis-Kulin, vice president of global recognition at Great Place to Work. “It’s the only official recognition determined by employees’ real-time reports of their company culture. Earning this designation means that Rehau companies in the Americas are among the best companies to work for in their countries.”

“We are honored that seven countries in our region have now joined the ranks of manufacturing companies who are Great Place to Work-Certified,” said Monika Irchenhauser, vice president of human resources. “We are also very pleased that our employees, including the 80 percent who work in our eight manufacturing plants, say that Rehau is a great place to work. Customers can be assured that no matter the origin of their Rehau product, it comes from employees who are proud of the company and of the work that they do.”

As a manufacturing company, jobs at Rehau entail all the challenges that come with developing, producing and distributing products in a global economy. Employees at all levels are encouraged to take the lead and make something better every day. Assuming responsibility for the work that needs to be done, jumping in to lend a helping hand to a team member and celebrating wins together is engrained in the company’s culture. As confirmed by the survey, 89 percent of employees affirm that “When I look at what we accomplish, I feel a sense of pride.” and 84 percent agree that “I can be myself around here.”

With a careful balance of experience and openness to change, Rehau continually evolves to meet the needs of a permanently changing world. In addition to the standard benefit programs employees expect, all Rehau employees are able to participate in a variety of programs that promote a positive workplace experience. They receive rewards for innovative ideas through the My Idea for Rehau program, foster team spirit through the peer-recognition platform INSPIRE Americas and have their voices heard thanks to the culture of open doors and transparent communication instilled by the company’s founder, Helmut Wagner.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we acknowledge that being a great place to work is a continuous journey that requires all employees to resolve issues as they arise,” said Irchenhauser. “Our persistent efforts will help Rehau  maintain this certification for years to come.”

Seven more companies joined since May

In April, the Brussels-based Europur Association reported that six companies had joined the association in 2022. Since then, seven more companies have become Europur members, bringing the total to 13 new members and more than 100 members this year alone. Together, the members operate more than 70% of the PU foam plants in Europe and produce about 1.1 million tons of PU foam – still about 80% of the total production in the region.

Europur is the European Association of Flexible PU Foam Block Manufacturers based in Brussels and has represented the industry for more than five decades. It provides a platform to discuss the most important issues related to foam production and use and to act accordingly.

One of the newest members is H&S Anlagentechnik from Sulingen, Germany. “We absolutely share the values of Europur. Above all, the area of sustainability is particularly close to our hearts and we are therefore very pleased to be able to make an even greater difference in the future as a new member of Europur,” says Mila Skokova, Sales & Product Manager at H&S Anlagentechnik.

Like Europur, H&S Anlagentechnik is committed to promoting the unique benefits of flexible polyurethane foam in its many applications. For example, in cooperation with the Dutch recycling company RetourMatras, H&S Anlagentechnik has implemented the post-consumer mattress recycling project, which is about to be put into operation. But the cooperation with the mattress recycling program “Renuva” at Orion Chemicals Orgaform is also one of the world’s first projects in this field, which also fits perfectly with the theme of sustainability. “Such projects move the entire recycling industry forward, as they are not only environmentally friendly, but also bring economic benefits. Here, we are specifically concerned with the more active implementation of projects that are not only focused on the area of research. Only in this way can we become even more attractive in the area of sustainability and take care of our ecological balance by actively fighting against the waste streams,” says Skokova.

H&S Anlagentechnik GmbH develops plant and process technologies for the efficient, flexible, production-safe and environmentally compatible storage, metering, mixing and formulation of polyurethanes, as well as for the chemical recycling of PU and PET waste. For 30 years, the plant engineering company has combined chemical expertise with technical production and developed individual solutions for customers from various industries. H&S Anlagentechnik GmbH stands for excellently trained engineers and chemists, international experience and a worldwide network of sales partners.

"Orgatec" 2022

Routes into new ways of working

The days when a quick glance was all you could get are over. At “Orgatec”, it’s all about touching, trying and experiencing. The Inspired Hybrid Office special event will showcase successfully implemented new work solutions – not abstract visions of the future. Visitors will be able to experience and try out the working environments presented at first hand.

Over the last two years, our world of work has been going through a period of radical change. Global events have forced a change in what was previously the status quo. The way we work and where we work have changed forever. New working models have emerged and become established. Working from home is one example of an approach that used to be the exception, but is now suddenly part of everyday life. However, many companies would like their employees to come back to their old offices – at least part-time. But staff are now returning to their companies with a new set of experiences and different expectations.

So, where do we go from here? On the one hand, this raises the question of how we can now revive aspects of working life that have been missed recently, such as face-to-face interaction with colleagues. And on the other hand, we need to find ways of taking all the things that have worked well and have added value to our teams, professionalising them and incorporating them into the new normal. Trade visitors to “Orgatec”2022 from 25 to 29 October will find answers to these questions at the special Inspired Hybrid Office event in Hall 8.

The special event is a natural follow-on to Inspired Collaboration, the special exhibition area at “Orgatec”2018, which showed how hybrid collaboration between people can work regardless of differences in space and time. Zgoll: GmbH was the partner for this original project and will also be the lead supporter of the new event at “Orgatec”2022.

The way into the new work routine
Inspired Hybrid Office aims to reveal routes into new ways of working. In particular, it will address questions such as how a safe return to the office can be organised and what opportunities and challenges face companies in their working environments. After all, the place where an employee works on a daily basis is no longer exclusively either the office or their home, but can instead be chosen by the employee on the basis of individual requirements and in the context of the task at hand.
Fewer desks – more dynamic workspaces
As a result of these developments, changes are needed with respect to technical equipment. For instance, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, offices need far fewer desks but far more dynamic workspaces and meeting spaces – creative areas that are suitable for interactive, collaborative work. But in many companies, meeting rooms date from a time before COVID-19, when videoconferencing was often only available to executives. Today, however, employees at all levels have extensive experience of daily videoconferencing and home offices fitted out with professional equipment. And this raises expectations when staff return to their old workspaces. How can these expectations be met? How can companies create office environments with added value? Or, put another way: what can and must an office workplace offer its users in terms of added value when compared with a home office?
“Inspired Hybrid Office will offer answers to these timely questions through proven best-practice examples,” promises Michael Zgoll, Managing Director of Zgoll: GmbH, adding: “That’s the secret to the special event. Instead of presenting abstract visions of the future, we’ll show how, through carefully thought-out concepts for the use of space and technology, direct communication and creative collaboration can thrive even in new working environments by adapting existing spaces and combining the latest technology in intelligent ways.”

Here you can experience the New Work everyday life at first hand
In a space extending over more than 700 square meters, the special event will demonstrate what is already possible in terms of technology and workplace planning today: a working environment for new work, with an integrated, holistic concept comprising different work processes, practical and seamless transitions between working from home and working in the office, with dynamic floor plans and a combination of existing building technology with intelligent sensor systems. By making coherent use of collaboration and booking tools, such an inspired office will create a working environment in which every employee will find the right workspace to suit their precise tasks and requirements every day, be able to customise it with great ease, and maintain an inspired flow of ideas with colleagues wherever they happen to be. And at “Orgatec’s”’ special Inspired Hybrid Office event, trade visitors can experience at first hand what everyday life would be like in this new world of work, because all the application models presented will be fully functional and could be rolled out in companies as they are or in a similar way in the near future.
But that alone is not enough to bring about a successful transformation, as Anton Michael Döschl, Director Sales Modern Workplace at Cisco Deutschland and one of the special event’s strong high-tech partners, knows: “The term new work is also specifically used to describe the structural change – i.e. the transformation of our world of work – caused by digitalisation and the changing needs and wants of the workforce. It’s a tough challenge for companies, and meeting it involves not only technical solutions, but also cultural change.”

Inspired Hybrid Office Stage invites to professional exchange and discussion
In addition to Cisco, further partner companies such as Samsung, Sony and Telekom will ensure that the Inspired Hybrid Office space meets state-of-the-art technical standards. But of course, it’s not always enough simply to see the final version of the solution. That’s why the Inspired Hybrid Office Stage will also provide insights into the theory behind the practical demonstration models.
This is where successful implementation strategies will be presented by contributors with first-hand experience, and where there will be opportunities to exchange ideas with the leading scientists and researchers behind the products. Attendees will be able to see for themselves how leading international companies have created hybrid working environments and with which partners and technologies, what has already proven successful and what challenges they have had to overcome. In short, audiences will be presented with successful strategies by people experts who have actually implemented them so that they will come away with important ideas for their own projects.

Cisco’s decision to participate in “Orgatec” was also motivated by this combination of inspiring insights into new working environments, showcases of new materials, company presentations and opportunities for professional dialogue. “This is what makes ‘Orgatec’ 2022 the right platform for Cisco to introduce new approaches to potential customers and further develop established models,” says Anton Michael Döschl. He’s looking forward to speaking to trade visitors: “We would like to welcome you to our stand, which has never before offered so many creative ideas and incentives. Discover how we interpret the term ‘modern workplace’ and find out which concepts work. Come and be inspired by our ideas and by the passion of our valued partners.”

Moves its registered office from Luxembourg to Germany

The two Extraordinary General Meetings of Stabilus SE last week approved the transfer of the company’s registered office from Luxembourg to Germany with an attendance rate of 78.3 percent and an approval rate of 100 percent.

The transfer of the registered office will become effective upon registration of the company in the German Commercial Register. Stabilus will report on this in a separate corporate news item on the day of registration.

In addition to the transfer of the registered office, the new Articles of Association of Stabilus SE, the new authorized capital and the conversion of dematerialized shares into bearer shares were resolved. The new Articles of Association authorize the Executive Board, with the approval of the Supervisory Board, to increase the company’s share capital by a maximum of 2.47 million euros, i.e. by a maximum of 10 percent, by issuing new shares over the next five years. Furthermore, the Extraordinary General Meeting confirmed the mandates of the Supervisory Board members with an approval rate of 99.6 percent.

“We are pleased about the strong approval of the shareholders for the relocation of the registered office as well as for the new articles of association,” emphasizes Dr. Stephan Kessel, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Stabilus SE. “The relocation of the registered office will lead to a simplification of the Group’s structures and thus to a reduction of complexity, which at the same time will result in cost savings and efficiency gains. In the future, both the Group headquarters and the stock exchange listing of Stabilus SE will be in Germany.”
