A great success both live and online

The 49th “CIFF Guangzhou” was held in two phases, from July 17 to 20 and from July 26 to 29, at the Canton Fair Complex in Guangzhou Pazhou. It welcomed more than 2,500 exhibitors from 23 countries and regions and 139,574 trade visitors to a total exhibition area of 510,000 square meters. Eight thematic exhibitions and over 130 conferences and forums were held. For the first time, “CIFF Guangzhou” was also held online and recorded 50.19 million visits.

The first phase was dedicated to the world of living: from home furnishing and decoration for interiors to outdoor living. Major companies exhibited at “Home Furniture”, including 70 design brands that had not participated in “CIFF” in the past five years.

Among the numerous events, the “CMF-Trend Lab” interpreted the market trends in this context in the form of four workshops: “Digital Post-mankind Lab” focused on the virtual economy and the digital framework; “Unbalance Lab” developed the themes of well-being in the post-covid era, the innovation in food and the focus on zero emissions; “Nation Oriented Lab” focused on innovation in traditional crafts, the redefinition of the oriental spirit and the activation of industrial materials; “Body Shaming Lab” focused on the growing role of women in the economy and the resulting changes in consumer decision-making. Around 50 design studios actively participated in the “D2M Lab”, a platform for exchange between designers and manufacturers.

The exhibition area “Homedecor & Hometextile” presented new trends on interior decoration: home accessories, lighting, decorative elements and artificial flowers to enrich any kind of ambience. Outdoor & Leisure dealt with the outdoor lifestyle, showing increasingly select solutions for extending quality and comfort to the outdoors as well.

The second phase focused on the world of work and public spaces, as well as the technologies required for the furniture industry. “Office Show” showcased industry leaders with smart and sustainable workplace design solutions that improve productivity, well-being and safety. Much space was also devoted to commercial public spaces, healthcare and senior living facilities, and schools.

“2030+ International Future Office” (IFO ), with the theme “Hyper Dimensions,” analyzed the workplace in the three dimensions of time, space and wisdom to explore a new model of the work environment and new trends in office equipment. Renowned brands such as Steelcase, Koenig+Neurath, Lamex, Sitland, Magis, Estel, Rexite, Gan, Aurora, Sunon, Tom Dixon and Linak participated in the design exhibition jointly organized by “CIFF” and China National Furniture Association.

“CIFM/interzum guangzhou 2022” offered visitors a full range of technology and semi-finished products for the furniture industry. Renowned Chinese and international brands of machinery, materials, finishes and hardware gave a convincing response to the needs of an ever-growing industry that relies on the most innovative solutions to generate quality through production optimization.

The next “CIFF Guangzhou” will be held from 18 to 21 and from 28 to 31 March 2023.

Rings in a new era of sustainability with a wooden bell

At the start of the 2022 Annual General Meeting of EPF, the European Panel Federation, held in Ghent from June 29 to July 1, a wooden bell was inaugurated, made entirely of wood-based materials by arborist Ben Vanden Berghe.

By ringing this bell, EPF and Fedustria, the Belgian association of the textile, wood and furniture industries and this year’s host of the AGM, aim to symbolically herald a new era of sustainability in construction, furniture, packaging and other sectors served by innovative wood-based materials. After all, products from sustainable sources not only make an active contribution to climate protection through natural, long-term carbon storage, but also fit perfectly into the circular economy and optimize resource efficiency through the cascading use of wood. They represent both the past and the way forward.

Today, only 45 percent of wood in Europe is used for materials. EPF calls on regulators, EU institutions and also consumers to advocate or opt for nature-based materials where multiple uses of wood are preferred, in order to increase the use to at least 60 percent in this way. After all, the age of sustainability has dawned.

As EPF Chairman Martin Brettenthaler pointed out, “Together with our members and in the traditional yet progressive city of Ghent, the wood-based materials sector as a European ‘flagship industry’ is proud to herald the beginning of an exciting future.”

Order intake in the first half of 2022 exceeds EUR 1 billion for the first time

Following the record order intake in the opening quarter, the strong demand at the Homag Group continued in the second quarter. The company also achieved significant growth in sales and earnings in the first half of 2022.

In the first six months of 2022, the Homag Group’s order intake increased by 18 percent compared to the already very high previous year’s figure to EUR 1,031 million (previous year: EUR 872 million). “This is the first time we exceeded the EUR 1 billion mark in a half-year,” emphasizes CEO Dr. Daniel Schmitt. “We were successful both in the single machine business and in the systems business with complete production lines as well as with our service portfolio. In terms of regions, North America in particular developed very strongly. Demand was particularly high for systems for the production of components for sustainable timber houses there.” As a result of the high order intake, the order backlog rose to EUR 1,269 million as of June 30, 2022 (June 30, 2021: EUR 839 million).

Sales increased for the sixth consecutive quarter, improving by 21 percent to EUR 782 million in the first half of 2022 (previous year: EUR 647 million). As reasons for the increase in sales, Dr. Daniel Schmitt cites “efficient capacity utilization, improved adjustment to material shortages as well as positive exchange rate effects and a temporarily higher share of merchandise with no added value of its own in a major US order.”

The HOMAG Group was able to increase its EBIT before extraordinary effects by 45 percent to EUR 58.6 million (previous year: EUR 40.3 million), even though the supply chain problems continued to lead to additional expenses and the share of sales revenue generated by lower-margin merchandise was above average. High capacity utilization, the growing service business and the efficiency improvements of previous years had a positive impact on earnings.

As of June 30, 2022, the number of employees in the company had increased to 7,333 (June 30, 2021: 6,800). The Homag Group has built up its workforce particularly in the strategically important areas of service and timber construction.

With the “Holz-Handwerk” exhibition in Nuremberg in July, a major trade fair was held as an in-person event for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Daniel Schmitt comes to a positive conclusion: “We succeeded in having many good discussions with customers at the exhibition. Our innovations met with great approval and we observed great interest in our solutions in the areas of digitalization and automation. We therefore maintain an optimistic outlook for the remainder of the year.”

HMTX signs new i4F digital printing license and purchases “Jupiter” line

I4F, a group of companies providing patents and technologies to the flooring industry, announced that U.S.-based HMTX Industries has signed a new I4F digital printing technology license and purchased a Hymmen “Jupiter” digital printing line. This will be the first Hymmen digital printing line in China, where HMTX manufactures. HMTX’s innovative, sustainable and socially responsible flooring products will be manufactured there in the near future using the Hymmen “Jupiter JPT-C” print-to-board (direct-to-board) line. I4F licenses the world’s most advanced digital printing technologies and provides exclusive access to all Hymmen digital printing technologies.

HMTX Industries is a global new materials flooring company serving a wide range of companies in the construction and renovation markets. HMTX companies and brands include “Halstead,” “Metroflor,” “Teknoflor,” “Aspecta” and “Allure.”

The acquisition of the new digital printing line from Hymmen is an important building block in the digital transformation that HMTX is strategically pursuing. Products manufactured on the “Jupiter” will be on display at the group’s “Create-Visualize-Realize” center, among others, which HMTX will soon open at its U.S. headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Hymmen developed the “Jupiter JPT-C Print-to-Board” lines for industrial production in three-shift operation, offering intelligent and high-precision register accuracy. Maximum color stability and print quality at print speeds from 25 up to 50 meters per minute is no problem. HMTX has chosen 8-color printing with “DLEplus” technology using digitally printable textured varnishes.

According to Hymmen, digital printing will play a crucial role in the development of new flooring products, as it offers the highest flexibility for design and structure and can be applied to a wide range of materials. With digital printing technology, it is possible to react much faster to current market demands. The high design and decor flexibility is a key competitive advantage in the flooring sector.

Harlan Stone, CEO of HMTX, says, “Our goal is to be the most innovative manufacturer of new flooring products. The decision to move to digitally printed products makes the biggest contribution to achieving this goal. The time to market for products is reduced from six months to six days. I think that just says it all. I4F has been our preferred technology partner for a long time and is also supporting us now on our path to greater sustainability and innovation leadership.”

Jürgen Schröer back in the management board

Barely eight months after the last change in the management board, Robert Bürkle GmbH has reorganized itself again. And this with a familiar face in the executive board: Dipl.-Ing. Jürgen Schröer has been CEO at Bürkle again since June 1, 2022. Schröer was already active as CEO at Bürkle from 2014 to 2019. From 2020 until the end of May 2022, he accompanied the company as chairman of the advisory board. In addition to his duties as CEO, Schröer is also responsible for the operational management of the group of companies as COO. The new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is Frank Gollwitzer.

“With Frank Gollwitzer, we were able to win over a financier experienced in project-oriented mechanical and plant engineering. Olaf Rohrbeck, as a successful CSO / CTO, continues to be responsible for sales, marketing and technology. He brings his extensive experience in the complex international markets to the further optimization of our competitiveness. After my years as Chairman of the Advisory Board, I am looking forward to actively shaping the operational realignment of our group of companies”, Schröer comments on the tasks of the management.

Accordingly, Jan Sieckmann as CEO, Jürgen Müller as CFO and Olaf Hartwig as COO Production and Materials Management have left the company. The three had shared the management of the engineering company with Olaf Rohrbeck since mid-October 2021.

In the 2021 financial year, Bürkle posted a record order intake; at the end of May this year, even the largest single order in the company’s history. The four production sites worldwide are working at full speed, according to the latest press release from Freudenstadt.

Growth drivers include the successful photovoltaic laminators. With this innovative technology, the Freudenstadt Group is contributing to the energy turnaround in Europe and the expansion of renewable energies. In other product segments, too, such as systems for the insulating materials industry, the printed circuit board industry and the wood-based materials and furniture industry, current business figures are exceeding expectations and plans.

For the future, the Group is positioning itself to be even more agile and flexible. “We are developing an individual growth strategy for each technology segment. Our organization is clearly focused on its respective business area. We want to achieve leadership in all market segments relevant to us,” the old and new CEO sets as a guideline.

The objective is to respond strategically and operationally to the needs of the highly diverse markets. “In the Executive Board, we are sure that this will enable us to further expand our technology leadership. The performance strength in all product areas and clear responsibilities open up additional growth and earnings potential,” Schröer emphasizes.

Selects Senior Sales Director for Furniture Solutions

Rehau today announced the appointment of Amanda Henrickson to the new position of senior sales director for furniture solutions. Reporting directly to the CEO of Rehau Americas, Dr. Thomas Troeger, Henrickson will oversee furniture division sales and customer service teams in the United States and Canada.

Henrickson, who brings to Rehau 13 years of experience with commercial interior product manufacturers in a myriad of sales roles, will focus on growing the company’s millwork and cabinetry business through a unified strategy and process consistency.

“We are pleased to welcome Amanda to Rehau and I look forward to seeing how she applies her extensive sales and commercial specification experience to accelerate the growth of our furniture solutions division,” said Troeger.

“I am proud to join Rehau’s very knowledgeable and tenured team, where I have been greeted with an overwhelming amount of support,” said Henrickson. “I am working to understand the current state in the different regions and define a clear, unified future state, supported by the specific tactics that will secure our sustainable long-term growth.”

As director of sales and marketing with Springs Window Fashions for the past three years, Henrickson worked extensively with architects, designers, developers and general contractors to win large commercial window covering projects, while also building brand awareness and growing the business through distributors. Among her accomplishments was incorporating sloped, motorized shades throughout the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

Prior to Springs, Henrickson served as director of sales with VT Industries, where she worked with commercial general contractors and distributors across the United States to provide top-quality veneered wood doors. During her 10 years at VT, Henrickson learned the business from ground up, starting in inside sales and working up to sales manager, then director – overseeing every aspect of the front-end processes including specifications, estimating, bidding, order entry, manufacturing, shipping, customer service and claims.

“I’m confident that my background with inside sales processes and outside sales territory management, along with a deep understanding of specification and project management within construction, will help the Rehau furniture solutions teams to reach new heights,” said Henrickson. “I’m excited to see the growth opportunities we will bring about through simple process changes and a stronger emphasis on commercial spaces.”

Henrickson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Following her time at UW-Stevens Point, Henrickson attended Lakeshore Technical College for Business Management.
