Majority shareholding in Italian manufacturer Saib

Growth through acquisition and expansion of know-how in the use of recycled wood: Egger acquires 60 percent of the shares in the Italian wood-based materials manufacturer Saib. The purchase agreement was concluded yesterday, December 15, 2022.
Saib, based in Caorso, near Piacenza, has been one of the leading wood-based materials manufacturers in Italy for 60 years, with a strong focus on design and sustainability. The majority shareholding by Egger opens up further growth and synergies in the globally active group of companies for the site with around 200 employees. With this acquisition, Egger is confirming its strategy of further growth in its home market of Europe.
Two family-owned companies, founded almost at the same time, with common values regarding sustainable business and reliable partnerships: Egger’s stake in Saib is an ideal combination and offers great development potential for both companies. The Egger Group is taking over 60 percent of the shares in Saib. In the long term, Egger will potentially increase its stake further. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price or further details of the transaction.
Thomas Leissing, spokesman for Egger Group Management, emphasizes the synergies of the takeover: “Italy is one of the leading furniture-producing countries in Europe, and Saib is one of the leading suppliers to the Italian furniture industry. By acquiring a majority stake in Saib, we are broadening our market access, increasing our capacity and adding Italian design expertise to our product portfolio.”
Members of Saib’s owning family Giuseppe Conti, Clara Conti and Sergio Doriguzzi will continue to manage the Caorso site. “The integration of our company into the international Egger Group gives us a growth perspective for the Caorso site and our employees,” says Clara Conti, explaining the company’s share sale.
“We will be able to benefit from the experience and network of a leading group that has always focused on optimizing production and product quality,” say Sergio Doriguzzi and Giuseppe Conti. “Both companies were founded and developed by families and share common values, such as attention to environmental sustainability and trust in their employees and workers. This is a solid basis for building a common future that will be characterized by continuity and innovation.”
The experienced team of 223 employees in Italy will be instrumental in supporting this joint growth course and will contribute their experience to the Egger Group. In particular, the sustainable, circular production processes pay off ideally in terms of the Egger Group’s sustainability goals. The plant has been using only post-consumer recycled wood in production since 1994.

About Saib: Saib is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of wood-based products in Italy. The third-generation family-run company, with 223 employees, produces around 600,000 cubic meters of raw and coated particleboard at its Caorso (IT) site, supplying mainly the Italian furniture industry with innovative and high-quality design products. Saib is a leader in the circular economy and has been using 100 percent recycled wood in its production for almost 30 years.

Over $100 million investment in North America

The Felix Schoeller Group is systematically implementing its growth program for North America. Starting in 2023, capacities at the company’s sites in the USA and Canada will be significantly expanded in three steps.

In the first step, a new silicone coater will be launched at the site in Pulaski, NY in mid-2023. This will enable the Felix Schoeller Group to supply the American market locally with siliconized release liners and films. In doing so, the company is relying not only on solvent-free silicone technology, but also on solvent-based silicone technology – and doing so using particularly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technological solutions.

Further measures in the course of the capacity expansion until 2025 include, on the one hand, the expansion of the paper machine in Drummondville, Canada, from currently 32,000 tons to over 40,000 tons per year. This expansion is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2023. Secondly, the specialty paper manufacturer plans to invest in the construction of a second paper machine for the North American market. The plant will then produce up to 50,000 tons of decor papers per year. In the course of project planning, the location and details of the technical equipment will be determined. The Felix Schoeller Group is also planning further targeted investments in North America, so that local production of Releaseliner base papers will also be possible in the future. The total investment volume in the production of high-quality decor and releaseliner papers for the USA and Canada is expected to exceed 100 million US dollars.

“With the significant expansion of our product capabilities and capacities in North America, we are following the plan of consistent expansion of our local supply strategy. We are and always want to be present with our products in the markets where our customers are at home,” said Hans-Christoph Gallenkamp, CEO of the Felix Schoeller Group. The decor paper market in North America is showing consistently good momentum and will continue to grow in the coming years, partly due to population growth, the resulting demand for housing and the associated investment by the wood-based materials industry. “With the project planning of the paper machine, we are opening a new chapter in market supply in North America. In the future, we will thus be able to offer reliable supply with local service and production not only to our customers for high-quality decor papers, but also in particular to those for the release liner business,” emphasizes Michael Szidat, who as CEO of Felix Schoeller North America, as well as Technocell Canada, is responsible for the business in North and South America. “Not least, the Corona crisis has shown how important such reliable local supply is,” Michael Szidat continues.

"Imm Cologne"

Sets the course for the future

Interdisciplinary duo to drive the trade fair’s further development forward: Dick Spierenburg and Bernd Sanden take over the leadership of the Interior Business Event. Together with Dick Spierenburg and Bernd Sanden, “Imm Cologne” is embarking on the mission of reorienting the Interior Business Event, hosted in Cologne, in a new direction. With the choice of Dick Spierenburg, formerly Creative Director of “Imm cologne”, and Bernd Sanden, previously Director of “LivingKitchen” and “Pure Architects”, Koelnmesse has decided to launch the 2023 trade fair year with a duo at the helm. The new tandem leadership team succeeds predecessor Claire Steinbrück, who oversaw “Imm Cologne” from 2018 and is now Vice President FoodTec at Koelnmesse. With this first stage in the development of a new concept for imm cologne, Koelnmesse aims to provide planning certainty for a relaunch of its long-standing trade fair brand. The “Imm Cologne” team is currently preparing for the Spring Edition in June 2023 in a challenging environment for trade fairs.

External specialist meets internal industry professional

Dutch architect and designer Dick Spierenburg, born in 1953, has served as imm cologne’s Creative Director since as far back as 2009. He will additionally assume conceptual and strategic responsibilities for the trade fair’s planned new direction. The external specialist is far from an unknown figure: Starting with “Pure Village” and later “Pure Editions” and “Pure Architects” and continuing with “Pure Platforms” and “Pure Atmospheres”, he has been instrumental in shaping “Imm Cologne’s” development from a trade fair focusing exclusively on furniture into an international interior business event over the course of his 13 years of creative and conceptual work for Koelnmesse. With the launch of the Pure Galleries format, Spierenburg is creating further impetus within the imm cologne universe and laying the foundations for a new trade fair experience in the Pure interior world. “My mission is to bring new thinking to the trade fair world. That means that we want to play an active part in shaping the future. I’m a firm believer that the momentum that trade fairs will be able to unfold in the future is much greater than can be achieved with a mere showcase of product innovations,” says Spierenburg.

Bernd Sanden can also look back on a solid track record at Koelnmesse. The 43-year-old holds a university diploma in Business Administration (Diplom-Kaufmann) and has 16 years of experience at Koelnmesse. Sanden joined the “Imm Cologne” team as Sales Manager. He was subsequently appointed Director of “LivingKitchen” in 2017 and played a key role in its further development. He has also been involved in numerous international projects in Russia, China and the US. His responsibilities will focus on leading an in-depth dialogue with businesses, key opinion leaders and associations in order to fill the trade fair’s strategic direction and Spierenburg’s creative ideas with life. “Breaking new ground is, in my view, a crucial point for imm cologne’s future credibility and relevance. Our goal is a new interpretation of the leading trade fair for the interiors industry in Germany,” says Bernd Sanden. “And the ‘Imm Spring Edition’ is the first step towards this future,” he adds.

China overtakes USA in robot density

China’s massive investment in industrial robotics has put the country in the top ranking of robot density, surpassing the United States for the first time. The number of operational industrial robots relative to the number of workers hit 322 units per 10,000 employees in the manufacturing industry. Today, China ranks in fifth place. The world´s top 5 most automated countries in manufacturing 2021 are: South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Germany and China.

“Robot density is a key indicator of automation adoption in the manufacturing industry around the world,” says Marina Bill, President of the International Federation of Robotics. “The new average of global robot density in the manufacturing industry surged to 141 robots per 10,000 employees – more than double the number six years ago. China’s rapid growth shows the power of its investment so far, but it still has much opportunity to automate.”

Robot density by region
Driven by the high volume of robot installations in recent years, Asia’s average robot density surged by 18% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2016 to 156 units per 10,000 employees in 2021. The European robot density had been growing by 8% (CAGR) in the same period of time reaching 129 units. In the Americas it was 117 robots – plus 8% (CAGR).

Top countries
The Republic of Korea hit an all-time high of 1,000 industrial robots per 10,000 employees in 2021.
This is more than three times the number reached in China and makes the country number one worldwide. With its globally recognized electronics industry and a distinct automotive sector, the Korean economy profits from two large customer industries for industrial robots.

Singapore takes second place with a rate of 670 robots per 10,000 employees in 2021. Singapore’s robot density had been growing by 24% on average each year since 2016.

There is a remarkable gap to Japan (399 robots per 10,000 employees) which ranks third. Japan’s robot density had grown by 6% on average each year since 2016. Germany in fourth place (397 units) is the largest robot market in Europe.

China is by far the fastest growing robot market in the world. The country has the highest number of annual installations, and since 2016 it has each year had the largest operational stock of robots.

United States
Robot density in the United States rose from 255 units in 2020 to 274 units in 2021.
The country ranks ninth in the world, down from seventh – now head-to-head with Chinese Taipei (276 units) and behind Hong Kong (304 units) and Sweden (321 units).

“Thin Board Challenge”: successful acceptance at Borg

On October 12th it was “acceptance” for an MDF thin board line made by Siempelkamp operated by Borg Manufacturing Pty. Ltd. Thus, the fourth Siempelkamp production line in total at the Oberon, New South Wales, location was handed over to the Australian wood-based panel producer.

In 1987 and 1995 the first two MDF plants at the Oberon location had been ordered from Siempelkamp. In 2017 the order chronology was supplemented by a plant for the production of particleboard. The order for the currently accepted MDF thin board plant with a “Contiroll” in the 8′ × 18.8 m format had been placed by Borg Manufacturing Pty. Ltd. in 2019 and thus now operates four Siempelkamp plants in Oberon.

The plant produces boards in a thickness range from 1 to 25 mm. In particular, the production of the 1 mm thin board represented a special challenge for the commissioning team.

“For us this is a special success, considering that, in addition to the technological challenge, the Corona entry restrictions also influenced the work of our project team. We are pleased that the work with our customer’s team in particular could be conducted in such a result-oriented and constructive manner regardless of this,” says project manager Stefan Wolff.

The new president is Miguel Nogueira

Miguel Nogueira has been elected as the new president at the general meeting of the International Committee of the Laminates Industry, ICDLI, the leading association of the European HPL industry. He succeeds Carlos Cruz in the role, who did not stand for re-election after 12 years at the helm of the association. Carlos Cruz was appointed honorary president.

During the European HPL Summit organized by the ICDLI in Bologna, Italy, the election of the new ICDLI President was also on the agenda. After 12 years at the helm of the ICDLI, Carlos Cruz, CEO Investwood, did not run again for the office of ICDLI President. Due to his many years of service to the ICDLI and to the interests of the European HPL industry, Carlos Cruz was appointed Honorary President and given a standing ovation by the members. Miguel Nogueira, Managing Director Surforma, was unanimously elected as his successor. Surforma, based near Porto, is part of the Portuguese Sonae Indústria Group. The president is elected for 3 years at a time.

Dieffenbacher

Delivering another Fine OSB line to China

Chinese engineered wood manufacturer A Beautiful Family Plate Making Co. Ltd. (BFP) has placed an order with Dieffenbacher for a complete Fine OSB production line for its site in Guangxi, China. Assembly of the new line is scheduled for the second quarter of 2023. BFP is expected to produce the first board in the fall of 2023.

The scope of supply includes all trades from machining to raw board transport. It includes the dryer, the screens, the chip preparation, the material recovery, the gluing including glue preparation and metering, the forming station and the forming train, the continuous press “CPS+” as well as the electrical system and the automation. After commissioning, BFP will use the plant to produce up to 500,000 m³ of Fine OSB per year.

“Fine OSB is becoming increasingly popular in China,” said Matthias Rübsam, Area Sales Director at Dieffenbacher. “Thanks to the lower raw material costs, OSB is an economical alternative to plywood for almost every application. Fine OSB also solves the problem of poor coatability due to the uneven board surface of conventional OSB.” To improve the surface texture, Fine OSB uses an OSB middle layer surrounded by particleboard face sheets on top and bottom. Finally, the resulting boards can be coated on both sides with melamine or phenolic paper in a short-cycle press.

“Fine OSB combines the excellent mechanical properties of OSB, such as moisture resistance, robustness, dimensional stability and high screw-holding capacity, with the surface quality of particleboard,” explains Rübsam. “That’s why Fine OSB is ideal for applications in home furnishing and decoration, flooring, custom furniture manufacturing and more. The Chinese authorities are so convinced of the product that they have introduced a national standard for Fine OSB,” he concludes.

Company founder Heinrich Sagel deceased

In 1962, he founded Vauth-Sagel KG together with his father-in-law Hermann Vauth. Since then, the company has developed from a specialist manufacturer of products made of wire and sheet metal into the internationally active Vauth-Sagel Group, which produces over 85 million quality products “Made in Germany” each year with its cross-material expertise.

Family, friends, the advisory board and the entire workforce at all locations mourn the loss of father, grandfather, great-grandfather, business partner, company founder, boss, mentor and exceptional entrepreneur Heinrich Sagel.

Companions describe Heinrich Sagel as a special entrepreneurial personality who drove the company’s fortunes and further development with tireless energy and never-ending drive. With great passion, he was always enthusiastic about new ideas and business fields.

The history of Vauth-Sagel is characterized by the virtues of Heinrich Sagel, the unconditional will to succeed and the entrepreneurial principle: “Customer-oriented custom work, combined with distinct adaptability”. And also the topics of highest material competence, strategic growth and family cohesion are important for the success of the company.

Heinrich Sagel has always attached great importance to quality in terms of innovations, materials, production facilities, employees and the training of junior staff. The latter has always been a matter close to his heart, and his ongoing commitment to training and the promotion of young talent will remain unforgotten to those around him, whether in his private or professional life. This year, too, although he was already in poor health, he took the opportunity to attend the annual Apprentice Day in order to welcome the young newcomers and to give them his motto “If you want to succeed, you have to be cheerful.

In his private life, Heinrich Sagel, as a passionate hunter and farmer, was committed to the interests of nature in his home region and beyond. Participation in and, above all, promotion of local associations were a matter of course for him and an integral part of his work.
