Unveils state-of-the-art sound reduction testing

The Vita Group, one of Europe’s leading providers of flexible polyurethane (PU) foam, has taken its R&D capabilities to the next level with the introduction of advanced acoustic testing technology.

Middleton based Vitec, part of The Vita Group has invested in the installation of an Alpha cabin, which provides in-depth data on the acoustic insulation and noise absorption properties of foam products. This will help Vita further formulate materials and composites with optimum noise reduction levels for end users in a range of market sectors.

Vitec can now conduct innovative, high-end audio testing within its own research department. This allows the R&D team to test more batches and to react to customer demands or in-house R&D breakthroughs at a faster rate.

Understanding the acoustic properties of foam is vital for a number of applications, including making cars and planes relaxing environments, reducing noise transfer between multi-occupancy residences and achieving a high level of sound quality in cinemas and other auditoriums. Knowing how sounds travels through foam also helps minimise disturbances from noisy appliances such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning units as well as lowering potential hearing damage risks in loud industrial spaces by quietening heavy machinery and equipment.

Thanks to investments such as the Alpha cabin and the expertise of the Middleton Innovation Centre, Vita’s team can tailor foam solutions to absorb specific frequencies. This means that if a particular nuisance frequency is known then the foam can be adjusted to best meet the challenge at hand.

Stuart Roby, Technical and Flooring Division Managing Director at The Vita Group, said: “Having the Alpha cabin at our Middleton Innovation Centre is an exciting development. It opens up a number of opportunities for our research into noise-tackling foam solutions. It opens up multiple opportunities for research into noise-tackling foam solutions. There is a demand for noise reduction systems of this kind, with everyone from data centres to manufacturing hubs and theatres all eager to find out how they can solve tricky sound-related issues and noise reduction systems, for which there is huge demand in the market. Whether it is data centres, manufacturing hubs or theatres, we can now support all our customers’ needs to solve tricky sound-related issues.
Our ability to quickly turn around state-of-the-art tests and then use this information to tailor foams for specific situations has streamlined the research process, making us the ideal partner for companies that want to find out how foam can solve their acoustic challenges and concerns.”

Silver from EcoVadis – seal of quality in the field of sustainability

Lohmann has received a silver medal from EcoVadis, a rating organization for sustainability and corporate social responsibility, for its commitment to sustainability. It was the first time the company had taken part in the certification process and met the requirements at the first attempt. The certificate applies to all Lohmann sites worldwide and underscores the company’s sustainability efforts.

The adhesive tape specialist’s sustainability performance was rated as “good” and thus awarded the silver certificate. This makes the company one of the most sustainable companies in the world. EcoVadis, the leading provider of CSR/sustainability assessments, enables companies to assess a supplier’s CSR and sustainability performance using a collaborative CSR assessment platform. The underlying methodology complies with the international GRI/G4 and ISO 26000 guidelines. Reason enough for Lohmann to meet the requirements of EcoVadis for the first time and to make the leap from a standing start into the best list of the most sustainable, international companies.

The sustainability experts from EcoVadis examined the company’s activities in the areas of environment, labor and human rights (social), ethics and sustainable procurement on the basis of guidelines and certificates. Lohmann scored well, or advanced, in all areas. For example, the company received 70 out of a possible 100 points for its environmental commitment. With the silver certificate, the third highest award within the rating, EcoVadis rated Lohmann’s sustainability commitment as “structured” and “proactive”.

The certification confirms the company in its strategic sustainable orientation. The principle that a company can only be successful in the long term if it combines innovative strength and sustainability is firmly anchored in Lohmann’s corporate values. Ralph Uenver, Director Sustainability at Lohmann, is all the more pleased and provides an outlook on upcoming sustainability topics within the company: “With this measure, we have impressively demonstrated our sustainability efforts, also in comparison to our market competitors, and we want to expand them even further in the future. Currently, for example, we are working on implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aim to be climate neutral by 2035.”

Ticket shop open, combined tickets also in conjunction with “Interzum”

The ticket shop for “Ligna”, the world’s leading trade fair for the woodworking and wood processing industry, which takes place in Hannover from 15 to 19 May, is now open. Interested parties can purchase tickets for the event via the webshop. You can choose between day or full-event tickets (39€/56€), reduced tickets (up to 15€) and a full-event combination ticket (76€), which also entitles you to take part in a Guided Tour. In addition, visitors who have been invited with a ticket code can register and activate their “Ligna” ticket via the ticket shop.

The prompt release of the “Ligna” ticket shop this year is also due to the difficult visa situation in some visitor countries. The organizers, Deutsche Messe AG and VDMA Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen, are hoping that early ticket purchase and appropriate planning time will facilitate visa approval. The “Ligna” team will be happy to assist visitors who need an official letter of invitation for their visa application.

After the regular registration of tickets or exhibitor passes, networking will be available to all “Ligna” participants from March. After logging in to the “Ligna” website, visitors and exhibitors can activate this service via their personal dashboard. In the profile, availability and individual time slots can be set and imported into their own calendar. Participants can complete their own profile with pictures, contact details and business interests. To receive new business matches, participants also activate their visibility for matchmaking via the profile. After activation, visitors and exhibitors will be suggested suitable profiles based on their stated interests and have the option of searching for potential business matches using keywords. In this way, participants can get in touch with each other in the run-up to the event, arrange appointments during the show and prepare their visit or exhibition at “Ligna” in the best possible way.

This year visitors to “Ligna” will once again benefit from the fact that their ticket purchase also includes access to “Interzum” (9-12.5.2023) in Cologne. Relaunch of the brand: “Paper made for life”

Paper is an extraordinary material. The climate-friendly, renewable material is strong, flexible and extremely versatile. With these properties, paper offers endless potential and plays an important often unrecognised role in everyday life. Felix Schoeller combines the experience of more than 100 years of paper production with the know-how to develop solutions for life from this material together with customers and partners. “Paper made for life” – that’s what the Felix Schoeller brand stands for. This is the result of an extensive process in which the company, led and accompanied by CEO Hans-Christoph Gallenkamp, looked at what contribution Felix Schoeller wants to make to society today and in the future. The new claim is one result. It simultaneously reflects the family-owned company’s vision of using paper to make life better and sets out the speciality paper manufacturer’s mission to harness the power of paper to enable solutions in people’s daily lives.

“We strive to empower our customers and partners with the power of paper to find solutions for everyday life. Solutions that enable our everyday lives today, address the challenges of our society and make life better for people and our planet,” says Gallenkamp. “We think ahead of paper and see it as a resource for the future – with endless possibilities.”

As part of the intensive process, Felix Schoeller involved employees, customers and partners from the very beginning. A central aspect was to find out what the brand stands for, what people value about the company and what they want for the future. The results were as varied as the possibilities that paper offers. “Paper made for life” simultaneously reflects Felix Schoeller’s own aspirations with its products and is a promise as the company’s contribution to society. Paper is the material and at the same time, as a recyclable material, it is at the centre of all activities. “Made” stands for the company’s expertise, borne above all by its employees, while “for life” stands for the drive to use its own products to enable customers and partners to make a contribution to people’s lives.

At the beginning of February, Felix Schoeller officially raised the curtain on its new corporate brand. In addition to the above-mentioned content, the comprehensive relaunch also includes a new global design and a uniform appearance to strengthen the Felix Schoeller brand. The Felix Schoeller Group will become Felix Schoeller, Schoeller Technocell GmbH & Co. KG will operate under the name Felix Schoeller GmbH & Co. KG and the Canadian Technocell Inc. will be called Felix Schoeller Inc. “Technocell” is and will remain the epitome of high-quality decor papers. The brand relaunch does not change Felix Schoeller’s services and portfolio for a wide range of applications and market segments in numerous industries and markets worldwide, either in this or in any other product area.

With its new brand identity, the company wants to focus on its proven strengths in challenging times around the world and send out a clear signal. “As Felix Schoeller, we want to send out a very clear, positive signal,” says Gallenkamp: “for a consolidated company, for paper as a material with potential and for the forward look of an entire industry.”

Door skin duo for Steves & Sons

New order for Siempelkamp: The US door manufacturer Steves & Sons, Inc. placed an order for two forming and press lines for the production of door skins. Siempelkamp’s comprehensive expertise in the area of wood-based panel plants, in particular for the production of thin MDF and HDF boards, was convincing here.

The new Texan customer also placed an order with Siempelkamp subsidiary Büttner for two fiber dryers and an energy plant. Steves & Sons, a Texas family-owned company, is entering the door skins manufacturing business with this project. “Quality, superior craftsmanship, and style” form the definitive commitment of the Texas family-owned business with 157 years of tradition in its markets.

The two press lines each consist of a fiber classifier, mat forming, forming line and the multi-daylight press yielding millions of door skins per year. For the press line design, the focus was specifically on the wide product variety, combined with the minimization of trim waste. For the process heat supply of the mill, Büttner contributes an energy system, based on biomass combustion, including flue gas precleaning as well as two fiber drying systems. The energy system not only supplies thermal energy to the drying systems, it also heats thermal oil for press heating and generates steam for wood defibration. Commissioning and start-up is scheduled for 2024.

The decisive factor for the cooperation is Siempelkamp’s outstanding competence in the wood-based panel industry, which includes plants for the production of thin MDF and HDF boards. This expertise is also in demand for the production of door skins – thin molded hardboard panels which, glued to frames on both sides, are used as interior doors. Siempelkamp has already proven its experience in the area of door skin production with a high-performance plant operated by a Turkish customer. The surface qualities of the panels require highest demands: From appearance and material density to thickness tolerances, many factors affect the appearance, the final quality, and ultimately the production costs of the door skins.

In addition, other factors contributed to the fact that two family-owned companies with almost identical longevity came together in this project. “Our experience in the North American market, our competence in being able to adapt technical designs very specifically to local requirements, convinced Steves & Sons.

We can also bring our exceptional expertise in the planning of complete plants to the table. This ensures an optimal process technology and operating cost design, for example in the form of low maintenance and energy costs, a minimized use of raw materials, and a high degree of automation,” say Dirk Koltze, President Siempelkamp LP/Büttner in Charlotte/USA, and Andreas Krott, Senior Sales and Project Engineer Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH.

Successful start to fiscal year 2023

Stabilus SE benefited from strong performance in its Automotive Powerise and Industrial business segments in its first quarter of fiscal 2023, which ended on December 31, 2022, and reported a significant increase in sales.

Consolidated sales increased to €290.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2023 from €243.7 million in the same period last year, representing year-on-year sales growth of 19.3 percent.

“The first quarter’s sales growth – both in absolute and organic terms – is on a par with that of the past, very successful fiscal year 2022,” said Dr. Michael Büchsner, CEO of Stabilus. “Our business development thus continues to defy the challenges of the difficult macroeconomic times worldwide. Even though the ongoing geopolitical and related economic uncertainty persists, we remain committed to our objective of profitable growth and our results show that we are able to deliver.”

In the EMEA region, revenue increased 3.5 percent to €109.2 million in the first quarter of FY2023 (Q1 FY2022: €105.5 million). The main revenue driver here, with organic growth of 21.7 percent, was the Automotive Powerise business unit, which outperformed the increase in vehicle production in the region. Stabilus achieved the largest increase in sales among all regions in the Americas region with 41.5 percent to €109.2 million (Q1 FY2022: €77.2 million), with exchange rate translation having a supporting effect here (organic growth plus 23.2 percent year-on-year). Growth was driven in particular by a strong performance of the industrial business in all segments and a general increase in vehicle production on the continent. In Asia Pacific (APAC), the company reported an 18.3 percent year-on-year increase in revenue to €72.3 million (Q1 FY2022: €61.1 million), mainly due to another strong performance by Automotive (organic growth in Automotive Powerise up 42.2 percent and Automotive Gas Spring up 2.7 percent year-on-year).

By business unit, Automotive Powerise remains the fastest growing segment, with organic sales up 31.9 percent to €107.8 million (Q1 FY2022: €76.7 million), despite only a slight increase in vehicle production worldwide. This was primarily due to unabated high end-customer demand for electrically operated liftgates. Overall, 35 percent (Q1 FY2022: 37 percent) of Group sales were generated by the Industrial business unit and 65 percent (Q1 FY2022: 63 percent) by the two automotive business units Automotive Powerise and Automotive Gas Spring.

Adjusted operating profit increased by 11.3 percent to €32.6 million in the first quarter of FY2023 (Q1 FY2022: €29.3 million). This corresponds to an adjusted EBIT margin of 11.2 percent compared to 12, percent in the same period of the previous year.

In the first quarter of FY2023, profit was €15.5 million (Q1 FY2022: €18.0 million) and free cash flow before acquisitions was €32.7 million (Q1 FY2022: €7.4 million).

Stabilus confirms its guidance for the full fiscal year 2023 and continues to expect sales of €1.1 billion to €1.2 billion with an adjusted EBIT[1] margin of between 13 and 14 percent.

Acquires Assets of Novem Industries

Egger Group, a global leader in the manufacturing of wood-based materials, has acquired the business and assets of Novem Industries, Inc., an established wood recycling facility located in Charlotte, N.C.The acquisition, via Egger’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Timberpak, LLC, is expected to enhance the mission of Egger Wood Products LLC to create more from wood and to be sustainable for future generations. Timberpak finalized the acquisition on Jan. 3, 2023.

“This acquisition will not only serve an important role in bolstering our sustainability initiatives here in North America, but will also better position us in key markets as we continue to expand and grow,” said Markus Frevert, plant manager for production at Egger Wood Products. “Timberpak will process post-consumer recycled materials to be used in the production of particleboard and thermally fused laminate products at our Lexington, North Carolina manufacturing plant. This diverts resources that would have otherwise gone to landfills. “

With the Novem Industries acquisition, Timberpak intends to transition and adapt its European-based processes and procedures to meet the needs of Egger’s Lexington plant, supplying raw materials for the plant’s on-site wood-recycling operations, which is currently under construction. Timberpak will serve as an additional source of wood for Egger’s particleboard and thermally fused laminate (TFL) production, while furthering the company’s sustainability goals.

In addition to Timberpak’s acquisition and new operational location, Egger Wood Products has strengthened its mission toward sustainable production by investing an additional $38 million in its Lexington production plant, which will further the ability to process raw recycled materials on site. Timberpak will be a valued partner in the new recycling operation.

The Charlotte location will continue to serve Novem’s existing customer base and retain the company’s six employees. The newly established North American Timberpak plant will be an addition to Egger’s existing waste wood collection operations in the United Kingdom, Romania, France, Germany and Poland.

Timberpak will accept construction and demolition waste wood, in addition to packaging waste—primarily used and broken pallets—from distribution centers for industrial manufacturing. The wood will be ground into pieces about one foot in length before delivery to Egger’s Lexington production plant.

Further processing will occur at the on-site wood recycling facility, which is expected to be completed in early spring. The recycled wood will be screened for metal, stones, plastic and other foreign materials as it is crushed into appropriately sized chips for particleboard production.

2022 was an excellent year

The year that has just ended was a really good one for Catas, the most important European laboratory for testing in the wood-furniture sector, which looks back on the past twelve months with real satisfaction, in the light of a slight growth over 2021 in terms of the number of tests carried out, just under 45,000, and a turnover that remains just over the 7 million euro threshold. The number of personnel is growing, reaching 56, and is set to increase further thanks to the hirings planned in the first weeks of the new year. And in 2022 about 200 training hours were made available to operators and companies by Catas Academy, through webinars, meetings, and seminars in Italy and for the international market.

“A 2022 that has pleasantly surprised us”, the Managing Director Franco Bulian comments, “if we think of the atmosphere of concern in which it had begun, with the uncertainties of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which led to the closure of three markets – Ukraine, Belarus and Russia – where we were making around 4 per cent of our revenues”.

Some of the activities launched by Catas in 2022 have undoubtedly contributed to this result, first among them a renewed commitment to the supply of testing machines designed and manufactured by Catas Engineering, thanks to which more and more companies manufacturing furniture can keep the quality of their products under control. The debut of the new service launched by the laboratory, “The Life Cycle measured by Catas”, has also been highly profitable: at a time when markets throughout the world are increasingly focus on sustainability issues, many companies have turned to Catas to objectively measure the environmental impact of a raw material, a semi-finished product or a finished product according to the internationally recognized principles of the LCA-Life Cycle Assessment.

A more aware consumer
“Today, more than ever before, consumers are careful in their choice of safe and reliable products”, Bulian continued. “A scenario that is undoubtedly the result of both greater awareness on the part of individuals and even more decisive and consistent international standards that have, as their ultimate goal, the best quality of life for all. However, I am convinced that the context of great difficulty that we have shared in recent years also plays an important role in this dynamic, as if among so many dark moments we are seeking serenity, a greater tranquillity among the objects that are part of our daily life. It is inevitable for companies to play their part and guarantee – through tests and certifications – reliability, safety, durability, care for the environment.”

The demand
As the Italian market continues to grow, tests for customers around the world now represent 35 per cent of Catas’ entire business. In 2022, in particular, there was a significant increase in orders from China, where many manufacturers have to meet the stringent specifications imposed on them by the furniture distribution global retailers.

The Catas proposal
A growth in complexity to which Catas responds – one of the few, if not the only laboratory in the world – by being able to offer all-round competence and experience: not only tests according to reference standards on the performance of a chair, a mattress or a table, but also fire reaction tests rather than on the quality of surfaces, mechanical tests, tests on paints and adhesives: “Those who turn to Catas know they can count on engineers, wood-furniture technicians, and chemists who can support them – quickly – with tests and certifications thanks to which they can define new products or implement and further improve established production processes. Being able to propose ourselves as a single point of contact for the entire furniture supply chain, as “total interlocutors”, helps us to consolidate relationships all over the world,” the Catas Managing Director continues.

Thirty years of the “CQA – Catas Quality Award”
The year 2023 will also see the thirtieth anniversary of the “CQA-Catas Quality Award”, a certification that does not concern a single product, but an entire production that therefore sees affirmed in terms of quality a “chain of values” including materials and processes. Just in the last few days Catas have reached the prestigious milestone of 200 certified products, from panels to coating systems, from semi-finished products to furniture.
An anniversary that will also be celebrated by the birth of the new certification – “VOC Low Emission” – which will be awarded to products that demonstrate that they limit emissions of volatile organic compounds within the most restrictive thresholds, another issue – that of indoor emissions – on which the end consumer is strongly urging the furniture industry.

Goals for 2023
For the year that has just begun, there are many opportunities to take advantage of activities, investments and plans that will allow Catas to further develop its activities in its three locations in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lombardia and Marche. In San Giovanni al Natisone (Udine) everything is now ready to start the project and construction of the extension of the building that holds the Fire Laboratory and the Mechanical Laboratory, an additional 2,400 square meters on three floors.
In the premises in Lissone, in the province of Monza and Brianza, Catas is reaping the benefits of a thirty-year presence that in recent years has involved a growing number of companies in the Brianza furniture industry and has led to the renewal and expansion of the number of the testing machines and equipment available.
During 2022, the activity of the Catas Point Pesaro, opened the previous year, was consolidated, which saw the definition of relationship for tests with many important companies in the area, as well as the start-up of courses and seminars that will certainly receive new boost from the move of the structure to a new and larger location.
And let us not forget abroad: during 2023 Catas will in fact be present for the first time in some exhibitions and events to confirm its international vocation and its desire to be more and more directly present wherever in the world there is a need to measure performance and results for the wood-furniture sector.
