Third “CPS+“ order from Africa

Egypt Kuwait Holding (EKH) subsidiary Nile Wood has ordered from Dieffenbacher a complete MDF plant with “CPS+“ continuous press for its greenfield site in Sadat City, Egypt. The order placed in September 2020 follows a development and engineering phase that began in late 2018.

EKH was established in 1997 by a consortium of Kuwaiti and Egyptian businesspeople and has since become one of the fastest growing companies in the Middle East and Africa with investments in 19 companies. Nile Wood is EKH’s first venture into the wood-based panels industry.

“We first contacted Dieffenbacher at ‘Ligna’ 2017 in Hannover and started serious project discussions a few months later,” said Nile Wood CEO Walid El Hennawy. “We chose Dieffenbacher because we believed their experience and dedication could help us successfully enter the wood-based panels market. We’re relying on Dieffenbacher to provide us with a high-end MDF line that will set the standard for wood-based panel production in Africa.”

Nile Wood will use Sesbania wood from its own plantations as the raw material for its MDF line. Sesbania is a fast-growing plant that matures for harvesting within two years and is environmentally friendly due to its ability to fix nitrogen. The water for the plantations is processed from urban waste water.

The complete MDF plant for Nile Wood includes a “CPS+“ continuous press, a chipping line, dryer, air grader and gluing system, forming station and forming line, raw board handling and storage, and a sanding and sawing line. MDF production is scheduled to start by the end of 2021. Operating under full load, the line will reach an annual production capacity of 200,000 m³.

Nile Wood’s “CPS+“ will be the third in Africa. The 8 ft press has a length of 32.4 meters. The first “CPS+“ sold in Africa was to Panneaux d’Algerie in Algeria in 2019 for a new MDF plant. The second “CPS+“ is being built for Ghamoud’s new particleboard plant in Algeria.

Signing ceremony with Guangxi Xiangsheng Household Materials Technology

On September 16th, 2020, Guangxi Xiangsheng Household Materials Technology Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Shuntian International Group Machinery Import and Export Company, and Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH officially signed an equipment purchase agreement. The agreement includes the production line with an annual output of 300,000 m³ line for Guangxi Xiangsheng Household Materials technology Co., Ltd.

At the signing ceremony, Mr. Pang Zansong, President of Xiangsheng Company and Head of the Paiyangshan forest farm, congratulated Siempelkamp on its success in the equipment selection, and expressed his gratitude for the technical guidance provided by Siempelkamp in the equipment selection stage.

The plant includes Siempelkamp’s universal flaker, a competitive technological milestone. The new ultimate flaking process developed by Siempelkamp, being one of the key factors for the customer’s decision, makes it possible to use more economic wood assortments, while still producing superior flake quality that results in excellent board quality. Boards made from these flakes are characterized by superior mechanical properties and a low weight. This process allows the usage of smaller log diameters below 80 mm and other wood assortments that would not be suitable in the traditional two-stage-process with knife ring flakers and therefore increase the overall feasibility and economics of the board production with respect to energy and wood. Additionally it is a contribution is also made to an increased ecological board production, because locally available wood can be processed, limiting transport distances for raw materials. This allows full use to be made of the superior forest resources in Chongzou area of Guanxi, Sino-Vietnam border area and Paiyangshan forest farm, Xiangsheng company’s controlling shareholder.

Another focus is set on the goal of producing environmentally friendly wood-based panel products. The formaldehyde free home decoration has become the biggest demand of consumers in China. The most significant feature of the new production line is that the whole line will follow the concept of “formaldehyde free production and environmental protection”. The overall concept is committed to producing high-end, formaldehyde free and environmentally friendly wood-based panel products.

Mr. Lubomir Avramov, General Manager of Siempelkamp (Qingdao) Machinery and Equipment Co., Ltd., thanked Xiangsheng Company for its trust and support on behalf of Siempelkamp. He pointed out that the signing is only the beginning of the trendsetting cooperation between two sides. With Siempelkamp’s technology, equipment and talents support as a guarantee, Siempelkamp made sufficient preparations for the cooperation to be started soon.

Siempelkamp will provide the process design and engineering technical guidance for the whole production line, and also provide the core equipment, including the universal flaker, strander, dryer, drum screen, hammer mill, oscillating screen, blender, forming and press line and trimming/crosscutting equipment. The plant includes a ContiRoll® Generation 9 with a length of approx. 40 meters and a width of 8,5 ft (2.8 meters). Equipped with five forming heads, it offers the production capability of OSB, light OSB, fine surface OSB and load-bearing special purpose OSB. This wide variety of board types furthermore underlines the recent trends and the local market requirements of hybrid boards and increased production flexibility.

Xiangsheng has been in the particleboard industry for over eight years and the additional annual output of 300,000 m³ high bending strength particleboard at the new plant represents an important decision made by Xiangsheng to adapt to the market demand, focus on the goal of making the main business bigger and stronger, and harmonizing with local industrial development planning. The first board will be completed and produced by the end of September 2021.

Record 2.7 Million Robots Work In Factories Around The Globe

The new World Robotics 2020 Industrial Robots report presented by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) shows a record of 2.7 million industrial robots operating in factories around the world – an increase of 12%. Sales of new robots remain on a high level with 373,000 units shipped globally in 2019. This is 12% less compared to 2018, but still the 3rd highest sales volume ever recorded.

“The stock of industrial robots operating in factories around the world today marks the highest level in history,” says Milton Guerry, President of the International Federation of Robotics. “Driven by the success story of smart production and automation this is a worldwide increase of about 85% within five years (2014-2019). The recent slowdown in sales by 12% reflects the difficult times the two main customer industries, automotive and electrical/electronics, have experienced.”

“In addition to that, the consequences from the coronavirus pandemic for the global economy cannot be fully assessed yet,” proceeds Milton Guerry. “The remaining months of 2020 will be shaped by adaption to the ´new normal´. Robot suppliers adjust to the demand for new applications and developing solutions. A major stimulus from large-scale orders is unlikely this year. China might be an exception, because the coronavirus was first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019 and the country already started its recovery in the second quarter. Other economies report to be at the turning point right now. But it will take a few months until this translates into automation projects and robot demand. 2021 will see recovery, but it may take until 2022 or 2023 to reach the pre-crisis level.”

Asia remains the strongest market for industrial robots – operational stock for the region´s largest adopter China rose by 21% and reached about 783,000 units in 2019. Japan ranks second with about 355,000 units – plus 12 %. A runner-up is India with a new record of about 26,300 units – plus 15%. Within five years, India has doubled the number of industrial robots operating in the country´s factories.

The share of newly installed robots in Asia was about two thirds of global supply. Sales of almost 140,500 new robots in China is below the record years of 2018 and 2017 but still more than double the numbers sold five years ago (2014: 57,000 units). Installations of top Asian markets slowed down – in China (minus 9%) and Japan (minus 10%).

In China, the broad majority of 71% of new robots was shipped in from foreign suppliers. Chinese manufacturers still mainly cater to the domestic market, where they gain increasing market shares. Foreign suppliers deliver some 29% of their units to the automotive industry, while it is only around 12% for Chinese suppliers. Therefore, foreign suppliers are more affected by the decline of business in the Chinese automotive industry than the domestic suppliers.

Europe reached an operational stock of 580,000 units in 2019 – plus 7%. Germany remains the main user with an operational stock of about 221,500 units – this is about three times the stock of Italy (74,400 units), five times the stock of France (42,000 units) and about ten times the stock of the UK (21,700 units).

Robot sales show a differentiated picture for the largest markets within the European Union: About 20,500 robots were installed in Germany. This is below the record year 2018 (minus 23%) but on the same level as 2014-2016. Sales in France (+15%), Italy (+13%) and the Netherlands (+8%) went up. Robotics in the United Kingdom remains on a low level – new installations slowed down by 16%. The newly installed 2,000 units in the UK are about ten times less than the shipments in Germany (20,500 units), about five times less than in Italy (11,100 units) and about three times less than in France (6,700 units).

The USA is the largest industrial robot user in the Americas, reaching a new operational stock record of about 293.200 units – up 7%. Mexico comes second with 40,300 units, which is a plus of 11% followed by Canada with about 28,600 units – plus 2%.

New installations in the United States slowed down by 17% in 2019 compared to the record year of 2018. Although, with 33,300 shipped units, sales remain on a very high level representing the second strongest result of all time. Most of the robots in the USA are imported from Japan and Europe. Although, there are not many North American robot manufacturers, there are numerous important robot system integrators. Mexico ranks second in North America with almost 4,600 units – a slowdown of 20%. Sales in Canada are 1% up to a new record of about 3,600 shipped units.

South America´s number one operational stock is in Brazil with almost 15,300 units – plus 8%. Sales slowed down by 17% with about 1,800 installations – still one of the best results ever – only beaten by record shipments in 2018.

The adoption of human-robot collaboration is on the rise. We saw cobot installations grew by 11%. This dynamic sales performance was in contrast to the overall trend with traditional industrial robots in 2019. As more and more suppliers offer collaborative robots and the range of applications becomes bigger, the market share reached 4.8% of the total of 373,000 industrial robots installed in 2019. Although this market is growing rapidly, it is still in its infancy.

Globally, COVID-19 has a strong impact on 2020 – but also offers a chance for modernization and digitalization of production on the way to recovery. In the long run, the benefits of increasing robot installations remain the same: Rapid production and delivery of customized products at competitive prices are the main incentives. Automation enables manufacturers to keep production in developed economies – or reshore it – without sacrificing cost efficiency. The range of industrial robots continues to expand – from traditional caged robots capable of handling all payloads quickly and precisely to new collaborative robots that work safely alongside humans, fully integrated into workbenches.

Awarded “Best Managed Company” by Deloitte for the third year in a row

Once again the Biesse Group is among the winners of the third edition of the Italian “Best Managed Companies”. The initiative to support and reward Italian companies that stand out for their excellent organisational skills, strategy and performance is promoted by Deloitte, an international company in the business sector offering services in the fields of auditing, risk consultancy (Risk Advisory), tax consultancy, financial consultancy (Financial Advisory) and consulting for companies and institutions from all sectors of the economy.

Deloitte evaluated companies on the basis of six pillars: strategy, skills and innovation, corporate social responsibility, corporate commitment and culture, corporate governance and performance measurement, internationalisation.

“Congratulations to the Biesse Group for this important recognition”, said Ernesto Lanzillo, Private Leader for Italy, Greece and Malta, and Andrea Restelli, Deloitte Partner and BMC Manager. “The companies honoured in this third edition have shown not only outstanding performance but also great ability and resilience in coping with the crisis caused by the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic. In fact, the assessment of the candidates took longer than expected to allow us to assess the way the candidates have managed the crisis period. The 59 best-run companies in this issue are thus the reflection of an Italy made up of excellence, which, by exploiting its strengths and through careful management, is successfully overcoming an unprecedented period of uncertainty”.

There are a total of 59 “Deloitte Best Managed Companies” (BMC), i.e. companies that have received awards under the Deloitte initiative. In addition to Deloitte, the Altis Università Cattolica supports the competition, as does “Elite”, a programme of the London Stock Exchange Group and the Italian employers’ organisation Confindustria.

The winners were selected at the end of a careful evaluation process by an independent jury composed of experts from the Italian institutional, academic and business world: Professor Lorenzo Ornaghi, Honorary President of the School of Economics and International Relations (ASERI) and university lecturer, former Rector of the Catholic University and former Minister of the Italian Republic, Maurizio Costa, Director of important Italian groups with consolidated management experience, and Francesca Brunori, Director of the Credit and Finance Division of Confindustria.

Takes place from 2 to 5 February 2021

Koelnmesse had originally planned to hold the “Interzum Bogotá” in May in the fourth quarter of this year. Due to the further deterioration of the situation in South America, the event has now been postponed until next year. To be more precise, it was postponed to February 2 to 5.

The “Interzum Bogotá”, formerly known as “Feria Mueble & Madera”, is the leading trade fair for industrial woodworking and furniture production in Latin America. The exhibition offers a wide range of machine samples, supplies and services for the woodworking and furniture manufacturing industry.

The most important decision makers of the region will be represented at the “Interzum Bogotá”. Colombia is the fastest growing market among the large economies of Latin and Central America. Therefore, the “Interzum Bogotá” offers the best opportunities to enter this market with high potential.

Digital General Assembly – Live events were the main topic of discussion

Special times require special measures: Eumabois, the European association of manufacturers of woodworking machines and tools, held its annual general assembly on 18 September 2020. Due to the Corona virus, the decision was made to unite all delegates and the Board of Directors on a digital platform to ensure the protection of all participants. The twenty-one representatives, together with the Eumabois President Jürgen Köppel and the Eumabois Vice President Luigi De Vito, used the 2020 General Assembly to discuss the challenges and opportunities that Europe and the world have faced and are facing as a result of the Corona pandemic in recent months.

Given the serious and profound impact of the Corona Pandemic on many industrial sectors, in particular on the exhibition industry, the participants discussed measures to be taken and different alternatives and their implementation. They agreed that the corona virus accelerates the digital transformation, which can already be seen at some trade fairs that are planning hybrid solutions as a combination of digital events and face-to-face events. However, Jürgen Köppel explained that “no digital solution can really replace the experience of a live demonstration, where visitors have the opportunity to see technology and compare the latest technologies”.

Looking at Eumabois’ global trade show network, many trade shows in 2020 were cancelled or postponed to 2021, which was certainly the right move at the time. Other fairs developed safety and hygiene plans to protect participants, exhibitors and everyone involved in the exhibition, in order to avoid a complete cancellation. “A great challenge, but an important step back to normality”, as Luigi De Vito stressed during the General Assembly.

In addition to the topic of Corona, which to a certain extent overshadowed the General Assembly due to its considerable impact on all sectors and economies, the various projects from the Eumabois technical and marketing sectors were explained. Jürgen Köppel emphasized the importance of a common European approach, because the competence and know-how of all member associations and their more than 850 member companies are the strength needed to set trends in the wood and wood-based panel industry on a European and global level.

In addition, the status of two very important technical projects was presented and further steps were discussed. Both projects, OPC UA (Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture) and ETML (European Tool Machine Language), provide answers to the questions related to digitization on a European level. The participants were very satisfied with the progress of both projects and it was agreed to intensify the efforts to develop common European solutions in the digitization of the woodworking industry. Luigi De Vito also took the opportunity to present the results of the Market Intelligence Project (MIP), recently completed by Eumabois.

Finally, Jürgen Köppel warmly thanked all associations, member companies and stakeholders who continuously drive the success of Eumabois by contributing their know-how and commitment to the common European idea in the wood industry. He closed the meeting with the statement: “I am confident that the current challenging times also offer opportunities that can be the basis for new approaches and ideas in our industry.

Even though the first digital Eumabois General Assembly was concluded smoothly and on time, all delegates are looking forward to meeting again in person at the next General Assembly, which will take place in Vienna on June 25, 2021.

Change in leadership for a strong future

New faces at the subsidiaries of Vivonio Furniture GmbH: While the plant management of Maja-Möbelwerk GmbH in Wittichenau is being transferred to new hands, there are also new developments at the management level for the Danish colleagues of KA Interiør and in the Netherlands at Noteborn.

The subsidiaries of Vivonio Furniture GmbH are positioning themselves for the future: Thomas Petzold will assume overall responsibility for production as plant manager at Maja-Möbelwerk GmbH. At the Wittichenau site in Saxony, flat-pack furniture such as shelves, drawer elements and chests of drawers are produced in three-shift operation by 800 employees in highly specialised plants. One focal point here is the production of lightweight furniture using a highly automated manufacturing process.

A new plant manager has been found in Thomas Petzold, who is best qualified for this demanding role. The graduate industrial engineer has extensive expertise in both process engineering and project management and offers many years of experience from various management positions, including at Infineon and Q-Cells. He has already taken up his new position and will report directly to Managing Director Uwe Gottschlich.

Two more subsidiaries of Vivonio Furniture GmbH will receive new management in the future. At KA Interiør in Grindsted, Denmark, René Heisselberg Pedersen will take over as Managing Director from 1st October, replacing Allan Meyer, who has been with the company for 25 years. As the largest private-label producer of sliding door cabinets in Scandinavia, KA Interiør offers its customers a wide range of made-to-measure surfaces, accessories and interior design options. The main sales market is Denmark, followed by Norway and Sweden. René H. Pedersen is a manager with international experience who has worked in the United States and Singapore and has many years of management experience in various industries, including the furniture sector, to draw on.

The management change at Noteborn is proceeding as planned: Over the last several decades, former CEO and owner, Norman Noteborn, has developed Noteborn into a highly professional manufacturer of made-to-measure dressing rooms and wardrobes. He has already left the company as agreed. Traditional craftsmanship combined with the latest production techniques as well as high-quality service are what account for Noteborn’s success today. Overall responsibility for the company will now be assumed by Bas Philippens, who will also take up his post on 1st October, 2020. Bas Philippens brings extensive experience from operational management roles and as a managing director. Originally from the Heerlen area, he has held positions at major corporations such as Nestlé and GE Healthcare in Germany and most recently at the Estée Lauder cosmetics group in Antwerp.

The new management will continue to utilise the existing synergies between the two companies KA Interiør and Noteborn: CSO Kristian Bonde, who has already worked for KA Interiør for 12 years, will continue to manage the sales activities of both companies. “We are pleased to be able to implement the long-planned changes in the various management positions so smoothly,” says Elmar Duffner, CEO of the Vivonio Group. “This allows us to continue our course of growth and to continue to advance the positive development of recent years”.

There is no classic presence fair in January

Although Messe München can demonstrate a proven hygiene concept, “Bau”, the world’s leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems, will not be held from 11 to 16 January 2021 as a classic presence trade fair. This is the very clear vote of today’s meetings of Messe München with the advisory board and board of trustees of “Bau”. Instead, a hybrid format will be realized from 13 to 15 January 2021, giving exhibitors the opportunity to present their innovations to a broad public. The digital part of this event will also be an important part of the classic presence fair “Bau” 2023.

As recently as June, Messe München had announced in agreement with both bodies that the event would be implemented as planned in January 2021 – but with the reservation that it would wait and see how things developed and review the situation at the end of September before exhibitors had made the bulk of their trade fair investments. Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of Messe München: “Falling infection figures and the opening of borders in June gave rise to justified hopes of a significant improvement in the situation. Unfortunately, the omens changed significantly in the course of September. Even if it were possible to hold a presence exhibition with our protection and hygiene measures, the designation of more and more risk areas throughout Europe with the associated travel restrictions has now called for this decision. According to our exhibitor survey, which we have conducted in the last few days, especially against the background of the worsening Covid 19 situation, the vast majority of our exhibitors now consider their participation in the presence fair to be unrealistic, since in the current situation it can be assumed that only a few of the originally expected visitors will be on site.

Reinhard Pfeiffer received approval from Dieter Schäfer, the long-standing chairman of the “Bau” advisory board and board of trustees: “The decision made in June was the right one. At that time, it would have been much too early to question ‘Bau’. It was clear to all of us that clarity would have to be achieved by the end of September. It was therefore logical to conduct a survey last week. The advisory board and board of trustees are behind the decision to replace ‘Bau’ in 2021 with a hybrid format.

A postponement of “Bau” was discussed with the advisory board and board of trustees. Martin Hörmann, the deputy chairman of these two bodies, explains: “Postponing the fair was never a serious option for us, because it would have interrupted the two-year innovation cycle that ‘Bau’ has always been based on. International exhibitors and visitors are a brand core of the classic ‘Bau’. Under the current COVID 19 framework conditions, we would not have been able to meet this expectation”.

Compared to previous years, ‘Bau’ 2021 will present itself in a significantly changed appearance. In addition to a compact exhibition area, the hybrid format includes an additional digital offer, especially for exhibitors and visitors who cannot come to Munich due to travel restrictions.

Exhibitors will be able to present themselves in the ICM International Congress Center Munich and in up to two exhibition halls, but forums and special shows will also be staged there. Companies wishing to present themselves on site can choose between compact system stands and individual stand design.

In the digital part of the event, lectures and discussions from the forums will be available to a global audience as a live stream and as recorded videos. In addition, companies have the opportunity to present their products virtually in their own online sessions. The hybrid format also offers virtual networking modules for exchanging ideas with other participants. It is also planned to integrate the traditional “Bau Info Talks” into the hybrid format.

Details of the new format and information on participation options for exhibitors and visitors are expected to be available online at www.bau-muenchen.com from mid-October. Exhibitors who had already firmly booked their stand for the classic presence trade fair will still be able to present themselves on site. Other exhibitors who have already cancelled can reconsider their participation, whether digital or on-site, under the new conditions.

Acquires minority stake in Cleaf

Cleaf and Egger, two manufacturers globally active in the sector of surface materials for furniture and interior design, enhance their cooperation, as already announced: With the signing of the acquisition agreement on 9.9.2020 and expected closing in November, the Austrian Egger Group will acquire a 27.5% stake in the Italian Cleaf.

Cleaf and Egger entered into a partnership about a year ago as an expression of a common vision and mutual respect between the two family businesses. As already announced the sales partnership will now be followed by the next step: Egger will acquire a minority stake of 27.5% in Cleaf. The parties agreed not to disclose the value of the transaction.

“We have always pursued the vision of broader cooperation. Our cooperation in sales has shown that together we can offer our customers the best of two worlds,” both companies comment. The majority shareholding in Cleaf will continue to be held by the Caspani family. Egger emphasizes that it does not intend to acquire a majority stake in Cleaf in the future either.

About a year ago the two companies announced the “Cleaf presented by Egger” collection for six European markets. Since its launch together with the Egger Decorative Collection in February 2020, customers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have shown great interest in this range. The two companies also presented themselves at the “Euroshop” in February 2020 in Düsseldorf on directly connected exhibition stands.
