Well over 100,000 B2B visitors

The Chinese furniture industry has given itself a double dose of confidence over the past month and a half. Because only six weeks after the 45th “CIFF” Guangzhou, which was postponed from March to July due to the pandemic, industry representatives met in Shanghai from September 6 to 10. 1,000 exhibitors, who occupied a total of 250,000 square metres of exhibition space, ensured that 118,409 professionals flocked to the National Exhibition & Convention Center. “An unquestionable success, confirming ‘CIFF’ as the key business platform for the Asian furniture market,” writes the organiser.

The Shanghai International Furniture Machinery & Woodworking Machinery Fair (CIFF/WMF) was held at the same time under the same roof, so the entire furniture industry supply chain was present: home, outdoor and leisure furniture, home accessories and furnishing fabrics, office furniture and machinery for the furniture industry.

The organiser praised the functioning safety concept in pandemic times: “A working concept and a commitment that has proven to be worthwhile in every respect. Thanks to the support of the entire furniture industry and the further improvement of the organisational quality, the dream ,CIFF Shanghai Connecting the Future’ could be realised, thus sending a positive signal for the recovery of the Chinese furniture market and the immediate return to normality of its reference fair”.

The next two trade fair dates will then fall back into the regular cycle: The 47th “CIFF Guangzhou” 2021 will show home furniture, home décor and home textiles, outdoor and leisure furniture from 18 to 21 March, while office furniture, hotel furniture, equipment for public and commercial spaces as well as components, raw materials and machinery for the furniture industry will be exhibited from 28 to 31 March. The 48th “CIFF” Shanghai is scheduled to run from 3 to 6 September 2021.

Goes on sale as hybrid special edition

Koelnmesse is clearly committed to “Imm Cologne” 2021 – but due to the Corona pandemic, it will be a special edition and in a hybrid form, with a clearly focused exhibition section and a digital platform. To mark the start of the year, the event will take place on four event days from Wednesday to Saturday from 20 to 23 January (previously seven days). At the same time, “Livingkitchen” 2021 will be suspended. However, the kitchen theme will be integrated into the special edition. “Our goal is clearly defined, even against the background of the challenging general conditions, to make ‘IMM Cologne’ possible next January. Based on a compact exhibition area and enriched with digital networking and presentation options, ‘Imm Cologne’ will provide the furniture industry with important impulses for the new business year,” explains Oliver Frese, COO of Koelnmesse. “With a comprehensive hygiene and protection package, exhibitors and visitors alike can move around the exhibition centre safely and concentrate on their business. We also offer our exhibitors a special edition of precisely tailored and innovative stand construction solutions that enable efficient and inspiring trade fair participation,” adds Matthias Pollmann, Executive Vice President of Koelnmesse.

Together with the Creative Director of “Imm Cologne” Dick Spierenburg, the team around Matthias Pollmann and Claire Steinbrück has developed various stand construction concepts and event formats. “With the new stand concepts, we offer companies a well-plannable framework for a first-class presentation on a compact area, and can thus bring together the most diverse ranges of interior design and kitchen themes,” explains Claire Steinbrück, Director of “Imm Cologne”. “Smaller areas and open stand design also means fewer stand personnel and lower costs. Nevertheless, the brands can still present themselves individually. The result is efficient business with maximum risk reduction”.

With the new “Imm@home” platform, the fair is expanding the business opportunities for exhibitors. It can also reach a wide range of visitors who are currently unable to travel to Cologne due to the Corona pandemic. This hybrid approach gives the special edition of “Imm Cologne” a wide range of additional opportunities for interaction. At “Imm@home”, visitors can engage in virtual exchanges with the industry and network with relevant contacts. Companies also have the opportunity to present their products virtually in their own online sessions.

“In the next few days we will see how positively our special edition concept is received by the entire market. I look forward to when we reopen the doors on 20 January 2021,” emphasises Matthias Pollmann.

Builds modern technology and knowledge centre

The Follmann Chemie Group is investing in a modern technology and knowledge centre at its company site in Minden, Westphalia. The laying of the foundation stone took place on 9 October 2020 – due to the current situation and the associated distance and hygiene rules in a small circle. In addition to the management and some employees of the Follmann Chemie Group, representatives from politics as well as the responsible architectural office Dälken (Georgsmarienhütte) and the construction company Hartmann (Minden) were present.

A modern, multifunctional training and event centre will be built on a total of 12,000 square metres by the end of 2021, where customer training courses, information events for visitor groups and employee events will take place. The two-storey entrance building is accessible via the central foyer for both visitor groups and employees of the Follmann Chemie Group. A staircase leads to a gallery with meeting rooms. This part of the building also houses a large auditorium with an adjoining catering area, which can accommodate over 140 people.

The adjacent single-storey building is connected to the entrance building and provides rooms for theoretical and practical customer training as well as for the application technology of the two companies Follmann and Triflex. In future, product tests and customer trials of adhesives and water-based printing inks on wood, paper and film as well as of construction chemical waterproofing and marking products will be carried out here.

A roof garden with a football pitch is also planned above the training building, where employees can take part in sports as part of the Follmann Chemie Group’s company health management system. The building also attaches great importance to sustainability. For example, a photovoltaic system generates the necessary electricity, and the building materials have been selected accordingly.

The company is investing around 15 million euros in the attractive complex: “Partnership-based cooperation with our customers, service providers and suppliers is very important to us,” emphasises Dr. Henrik Follmann, managing partner of the Follmann Chemie Gruppe. “The new technology and knowledge centre clearly shows the solutions we are working on together and also offers many opportunities for information and further training”.

The construction of the Technology and Knowledge Centre is also a further milestone with which the Follmann Chemie Group is continuing its expansion at the Minden site: The last construction project – the expansion of the construction chemicals production for Triflex – started in April 2016 and went into operation in 2018.

International study on return rates

In foreign business, the return rates are lower than in Germany. This is the result of a study by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) and the research institute Ibi Research at the University of Regensburg. According to the study, the retailers surveyed in Germany state an average return rate for Germany of over six percent. The average returns rate for foreign business is 3.8 per cent. Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Great Britain and France have a rate of returns of between 5.6 percent and 3.4 percent. The remaining countries account for 3 percent (USA) and 2.9 percent (China and Italy).

The study makes no distinction between industries and the sale of B2C and B2B. In the retail and clothing trade, the rates are somewhat higher when viewed in isolation. However, for the overall international comparison, the study deliberately forms an average value – across all product groups and sales forms – in online trade.

Other countries, other payment preferences. From this it can be concluded that the method of payment for goods ordered online has an impact on the rate of returns. In France and Italy, for example, “ordering on account” is completely unknown. In France, customers pay for their purchases directly by direct debit, credit card or PayPal. Many French online merchants even ship the goods only after advance payment. Other possible explanations for lower quotas in the foreign business of German retailers include the fact that in many European countries it is not common practice to return products without further ado or free of charge. The situation is completely different in Germany – here, customers expect a free return. In most of the countries surveyed, the return is generally subject to a charge at the customer’s expense.

“For the retailer and the environment, returns are by no means free of charge, even in Germany. This makes it all the more important that the processes in returns management are further optimised to avoid unnecessary returns. The costs and environmental impact of unavoidable returns must also be further reduced. The Returns Compendium should also make an important contribution to this by bundling knowledge and making it available to all those involved,” says Alien Mulyk, project manager for the “Returns Compendium” at the BEVH.

Criticises European Parliament proposal for a regulation on deforestation-free supply chains

The European Parliament is currently discussing a draft regulation on products from deforestation-free supply chains for the internal market. The aim of the proposal is to halt global deforestation by banning the import of products resulting from the conversion of natural or renaturalised forests for the cultivation of, for example, soya or palm oil. The list of potentially eligible products includes wood and the requirement to integrate the rules of the EU Trade in Timber Regulation (EUTR) into the new regulation with a delay of three years. While the ETTF welcomes the overall initiative on forest protection, it rejects the reference to wood as a raw material and to the EUTR.

In a first opinion addressed to Members of the European Parliament, the ETTF warns against creating further bureaucratic hurdles that could result from double regulation. “Professional due diligence systems have been in place for years for the import of timber and timber products, which are also subject to external monitoring by government authorities,” says Thomas Goebel, ETTF General Secretary. “We will call on the Commission to start by doing its homework on the implementation of the EUTR in all Member States at a level that will finally put an end to the ongoing market distortions”.

The ETTF is very concerned that the new initiative to seal off the internal market from the international timber trade could lead to products such as soya or palm oil from deforested areas being sheared in the same way as the sustainable raw material wood. The Association expects a clear demarcation here, but this is not feasible if the rules on wood imports are integrated into the new proposal.

The actual procedure for a regulation is expected to take place in the first half of 2021. This is the responsibility of the EU Commission, but the ETTF wants to contribute its position to the Brussels procedure very early on. The ETTF’s position is supported by the European wood industry association CEI-Bois, of which the ETTF has been a member for a year.

Hybrid event, other part of the fairground and parallel to “Heimtextil”

The two leading international trade fairs for technical textiles and nonwovens and for the processing of textile and flexible materials are looking forward to the coming editions from 4 to 7 May 2021 in Frankfurt am Main in a positive mood. With additional digital formats, a comprehensive hygiene and safety concept, new claims and a change of the exhibition grounds, both fairs are announcing changes.

From 4 to 7 May 2021, international suppliers of technical textiles and nonwovens, as well as of machinery for processing textile and flexible materials, will once again gather at “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” in Frankfurt am Main. Against the background of the worldwide corona crisis, Messe Frankfurt, as the organiser, looks forward to the coming editions.

“The current situation around Covid-19 also poses challenges for “Techtextil” and “Texprocess”. Although we expect the situation to ease up to the next editions, we cannot be certain. Therefore, we are planning both events on the basis of Messe Frankfurt’s current hygiene and safety concept. The number of exhibitor registrations and the feedback from the industry is very positive. There is a great need for personal exchange and to experience innovations live”, says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles and Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt.

Techtextil and Texprocess will continue to sharpen their profile for the next edition with a realignment of communication. In a first step, both fairs will have new sub-lines. With immediate effect, Messe Frankfurt will communicate “Techtextil” with the addition “Performance. Function. Future” and “Texprocess” with “Technology. Efficiency. Progress.” This is intended to give greater expression to the dynamism and innovative strength of the sector.

There will also be innovations in terms of exhibition space allocation at both fairs. With the 2021 edition, “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” with Halls 8, 9, 11 and 12 will use the western part of the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre for the first time. The current situation around Covid-19 makes it necessary to continue to expect circulation at major events. The health of exhibitors, visitors, partners and employees is therefore at the heart of planning for “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” in May 2021.

Messe Frankfurt is working on the basis of a concept that includes detailed hygiene, medical and organisational measures. Hygiene, distance and fresh air supply are important factors in the concept, which Messe Frankfurt continuously coordinates with the relevant authorities. Exhibitors at “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” will receive information and recommendations for their trade fair presentation that comply with the current regulations.

Up-to-date information on Messe Frankfurt’s protection and hygiene concept can be found here http://techtextil.com/hygiene and here http://texprocess.com/hygiene. In addition, a Corona Hotline on +49/69/75756699 provides information on all trades and Messe Frankfurt’s measures for holding events during the Corona Pandemic every day from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to the presentations of exhibitors at “Techtextil” and “Texprocess”, both fairs will once again offer a variety of fringe events, highlight themes and special formats. In addition to the planned physical formats, ‘Techtextil’ and ‘Texprocess’ will increasingly focus on digital supplementary formats for exhibitors and visitors. Among other things, live streaming of conference formats, new digital presentation options for exhibitors and opportunities for digital matchmaking between exhibitors and visitors are planned.

New: for the first time, ‘Texprocess’ will present the future of denim processing in a Denim Future Factory, with a special focus on sustainability aspects and the growing luxury sector for denim products.

In addition, the subject of sustainability will be expanded at both trade fairs by also highlighting, for the first time, products and sustainability approaches of exhibitors who, although not yet certified, promote sustainability in the sector. The “Techtextil” and “Texprocess Innovation Awards” also honour sustainable innovations. The range of products to be seen at ‘Techtextil’ will be rounded off by a new format of a fashion show on Smart and Functional Textiles. Techtextil and the Texprocess Forum bring high-ranking industry experts to the stage in lectures, workshops and panel discussions.

Techtextil and Texprocess will share the Exhibition Centre for the first time in May 2021 with Heimtextil, the biggest trade fair for home and contract textiles. The background to the postponement of the Heimtextil dates is the current situation in the wake of the Corona Pandemic and the associated international travel restrictions.

The trade fair normally takes place in Frankfurt am Main every year in January and, in 2021, offers the unique opportunity to present additional synergies along the textile chain at the Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre at the same time in 2021, together with “Techtextil” and “Texprocess”. Thanks to the fact that the three fairs will be held in parallel, trade visitors to all three fairs will be able to gain a comprehensive overview of functional materials for home and contract textiles, right through to their processing. The trade-fair duo “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” with the “Hometech” segment already addresses the home textiles sector.

With a total of 1,818 exhibitors from 59 countries and around 47,000 trade visitors from 116 countries, the biggest ever editions of “Techtextil” and “Texprocess” took place in Frankfurt in May 2019.

Acquires System TM A/S

The Homag Group intensifies its activities in the new market segment Construction Elements Solutions by acquiring 80% of the shares of the Danish engineering and manufacturing company System TM A/S. System TM is a leading supplier of optimization and systems solutions for the timber processing industry. In 2019, the company generated an annual turnover of approx. 30 million euros with approximately 130 employees.

In addition to Homag’s focus on the furniture sector, a new business segment is being created within the Homag Group. The new segment, Construction Elements Solutions, will combine timber production and processing technology along with Homag’s existing activities. Earlier this year, Homag has already increased its stake in Weinmann to 100%.

Pekka Paasivaara, CEO of Homag Group, explains: “We want to become a system supplier for the complete process chain in the area of construction elements, including cross-laminated timber (CLT). We are already in a good starting position. With System TM, we are acquiring an experienced, leading manufacturer with high-end products and a high reputation in project implementation.”

Markus Vöge, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing of the Homag Group, explains: “The business models of System TM and Weinmann support the strategic goals in the area of sustainability. With wood as a renewable raw material, we can achieve eco-friendly buildings and healthy living environments. Additionally, the strategic partnership with Hundegger, which was initiated in 2019, will remain an important component of our new business segment.”

Jan J. Samuelsen, CEO of System TM: “The company founders and former majority shareholders, Poul and Ingrid Thøgersen, have decided that now is the right time to retire, and to bring the ownership to new shareholders, who believe in the business philosophy of System TM and support the positive development of the company further on. Homag is the ideal partner for us, because next to our existing business in cross-cutting and finger joining solutions, it will enable us to expand into the area of cross-laminated timber. We see a good growth potential in this business segment. The new setup for us is a logical step as we have already been cooperating with Homag in North America very successfully.”

Further on, the Homag Group expects the new business segment to extend economic potential from a double-digit million euro level to a low three-digit million euro range. Additional synergies in the technological field as well as in purchasing are expected.

The Homag Group is the world’s leading provider of integrated solutions for production in the woodworking industry and woodworking shops. Its 14 specialized production sites, about 20 Group-owned sales and service companies and approximately 60 exclusive sales partners worldwide make the company a unique system provider. Backed by a workforce of some 6,600 employees the Homag Group offers its customers solutions for digitized production, based on digital data continuity from point of sale through the entire production process, combined with a comprehensive software suite. In addition, the open ecosystem “tapio” (open Internet-of-Things platform) maps the data flow along the entire value chain of the timber industry. The Homag Group has been majority-owned by the Dürr Group since October 2014.

System TM was founded in 1977 by Poul Thøgersen and is today a leading global supplier of automated high-end secondary solid wood processing systems. System TM is one of the largest suppliers for this sector in the world. The core competencies include everything from system design, installation, commissioning and training of personnel to service and maintenance. The latest technology, a unique project organization and a strong focus on close cooperation with the customer result in integrated solutions for every concrete need by optimizing processes and wood resources. System TM is headquartered in Odder, Denmark, and includes administration, production and assembly facilities. System TM employs approximately 130 highly qualified employees and has a strong network of partners and suppliers.

Final countdown for applications

The application phase for the “Ifoy Award“ 2021 is entering the finishing phase. Suppliers of products and solutions can apply for the “Ifoy Award“ 2021 for just one more week. The application portal at www.ifoy.org is open until October 15, 2020.

In addition to forklifts, warehouse technology equipment and special vehicles, automated guided vehicle systems (AGVs), shuttles, robots, cargo bikes, drones, cranes, software and apps as well as successfully implemented, integrated warehouse concepts are also eligible for application. In addition, outstanding technical details or components, such as ergonomic innovations, safety solutions or automation components, are also awarded. In the category “Start-up of the Year”, newly founded companies with innovative prototypes or functional developments can apply for an “Ifoy Award“.

Applications can only be submitted via the Internet at www.ifoy.org. The conditions of participation can be requested from the Ifoy office.

The International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year (“Ifoy Award“) has established itself as an indicator of economic efficiency and innovation and is regarded as the leading innovation award in intralogistics due to its technical expertise. The jury, with its members being the chief editors of leading international logistics media, makes its decisions independently, according to transparent criteria and on the basis of professional expertise. The decision is based on the three-stage audit. The products and solutions nominated for the final will undergo individually tailored driving or functional tests during the “Ifoy Test Days“ in early 2021 at the Hanover Exhibition Grounds, including the Ifoy test protocol comprising around 80 criteria and the scientific Ifoy Innovation Check. It is crucial that the nominees are not compared with each other, but with their competitors on the market. In addition, jurors and their advisory teams from the industry travel to the fair to assess the finalists themselves before they cast their vote.

The sponsor of the “Ifoy Award“, which is under the patronage of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy, is the VDMA Sector Association for Materials Handling and Intralogistics. Ifoy partner is the “Hannover Messe“. Pallet partner of the “Ifoy Award“ is Chep, world market leader in the pooling of pallets and containers. Partner for the logistics real estate sector is Garbe.

Digital tools ensure maximum range

Just as with “Imm Cologne”, Koelnmesse is also sharpening the profile of “Interzum”. The quote “We are not waiting for the good old days to return. We are actively shaping a new one”, by Matthias Pollmann, Vice President Trade Fair Management, naturally also applies here. The aim of the trade fair team is to use “Interzum” 2021 to offer the industry a secure platform for maintaining its position on the international market. “I believe that we must all be aware that the world has changed and will continue to change rapidly – and with it the reality of people’s lives. But we firmly believe that with our hygiene and safety concept #B-SAFE4business, our new digital and wide-reaching tools within the framework of ‘Interzum@home’ and with a positive attitude, anything is possible. With ‘Interzum 2021’, we have prepared the playing field for the industry in the best possible way. Now it is up to the industry to use this template,” comments Pollmann on the preparations for the upcoming ‘Interzum’.

A world-leading trade fair like ‘Interzum’ offers significantly more potential for customer contact than any other analogue or digital format. Because only such a globally relevant platform can really bring supply and demand together – just as only real marketplaces have been able to do for centuries. “The future as a marketplace will increasingly take “Interzum” into the digital realm as well, because this is where we see the best opportunities to extend the reach and influence of “Interzum” and thus reach not only visitors who cannot come to Cologne, but also people who take the diverse topics of “Interzum” more seriously than before, but who have never found their way to Cologne before,” explains Maik Fischer, Director of “Interzum”. “In the future, digital reach will also be used as a new success criterion for all our trade fairs. So it will no longer just be a question of the number of exhibitors and visitors physically present in Cologne and their origin – we also want to be measured by the quality of digital reach,” Fischer continues.

With the new “Interzum@home” platform, the trade fair not only expands the business opportunities for exhibitors, but also reaches a broader spectrum of visitors. In this way, the fair offers its participants a wide range of additional opportunities for customer interaction. Here, visitors can engage in virtual exchanges with the industry, network with known and new relevant contacts and advance their business. In addition to various digital stages with live streams, there are open and thematically curated video chats in the Virtual Café, and online trade fair visitors can also experience exclusive new products in private showrooms of the “Interzum” exhibitors. Exhibitors thus benefit directly from additional contacts and reach.

In contrast to conventional webinar and video conferencing systems, “Interzum@home” offers its exhibitors not only the streaming of content, but also the opportunity to enter into an immediate direct exchange with customers. The “Interzum@home” thus offers real networking, a decisive advantage for every exhibitor.

Trade fairs thus go to a new level. At hybrid events, what happens at the trade fair location is made suitable for online use, correspondingly distributed worldwide and enriched by additional digital offers and longer availability on the net. This does not replace the successful trade fair model, but extends it. “Events at the trade fair location continue to provide the basis and develop traction as a temporary meeting place for entire industries. Because we are convinced that concentrated energy unfolds when the right people come together for a short time and the immediate, personal, emotional exchange takes place – that is trade fairs, that is ‘Interzum’,” says Pollmann. “Certainly, in these times, you have to look ahead calmly but also courageously, because just as with ‘Imm Cologne’, the motto for ‘Interzum’ is ‘You make it possible – we make it happen!’
