2021 edition cancelled

With regards to the safe and healthy environment in Colombia and the region, trade show organizers Koelnmesse and Corferias have decided to cancel the 2021 edition of “Interzum Bogotá” because of travel concern and other circumstances regarding the world outbreak that made it impossible to hold “Interzum Bogotá” in the first semester of 2021.
Intensive discussions with key stakeholders and clients, exhibitors and visitors alike have shown they see great value in interzum bogotá in generating new business opportunities in its international platform. However due to new protocols and the current development of the world pandemic, the industry community considers the original show date in February too early to make full use of the trade show potential.
Because of market feedback, international travel to Colombia still being restricted, and different health concerns from international visitors, trade show organizers have decided to cancel “Interzum Bogotá” 2021 to meet again in May 10 – 13 of 2022.

A Happy New Year

A special year is coming to an end: 2020 will be remembered by us all as the “Corona Year”. Many things have gone off the rails in this context, both in our professional and private lives. Above all, the pandemic ensures that meetings take place predominantly in the digital space rather than in “real life”. Some companies are struggling to survive, others are clear winners of the Corona crisis. At the beginning of 2020, surely no one could have foreseen what was in store for all of us.

It was not an easy year for the “möbelfertigung” network either; after all, we thrive on being close to the market – ideally on the ground. But at the same time it was a chance to try out new things and to push them forward. We would like to thank you very much for the trust you have placed in us, through whatever channel. The entire team wishes you a happy new year and a successful 2021. Stay healthy!

Presents the new “World Furniture Outlook 2021”

Once again, the Centre for Industrial Studies (CSIL) has analyzed the global world of furniture and summarized it as a report, the “World Furniture Outlook 2021”:
2020 has been a challenging year for the furniture sector, hit by the pandemic both on the demand and supply side. The lockdown policies and their length varied across countries, segments of production and retail activities. World furniture consumption is estimated to decrease by 10% in 2020 (in current US$). For the first time, all regions are projected to experience negative growth in 2020, with differences across countries, reflecting different economic structure (dependence on severely affected sectors, on external financial flows and pre-crisis performances) and containment reactions facing the pandemic evolution.

Some trends that were already present across the sector have been accelerating during the year, impacting companies’ strategies. On the consumption side, the role of the online channel increased at unprecedented growth rates, with also leading manufacturers entering the market directly.

On the production side, supplied products, for example great changes in the office spaces, rising in the home office segment, multi-functionality, antibacterial surfaces, increasing attention of consumers wellbeing etc., are evolving. They could represent growth potential for the future.

The main furniture producer is China, with 41% of world furniture production. Other major furniture manufacturing countries are the United States, Germany and Italy. From 2011 to 2020 furniture production share of Asia and Pacific increased by about 11 percentage points. As a consequence, in 2020, more than half of world furniture production took place in Asia and the Pacific.

The leading importers of furniture are the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Until 2018 the increase in imports in the US was the main engine of growth in international trade of furniture. The decrease in US furniture imports in 2019 was mainly due to trade restrictions. Because of trade tensions between the US and China, within the total US furniture imports from Asia, the share of China decreased in favour, in particular, of imports from Vietnam. Preliminary data for 2020 show substantial decreases in furniture imports for all major countries.

The main furniture exporting country is China, followed at a distance by Vietnam, Poland, Germany and Italy. In the last ten years, the international trade of furniture has consistently amounted to about 1% of international trade of manufactures. After the major contraction in 2020, growth will resume in 2021 and the pre-crisis level, in current US$, is expected to be attained in 2022. CSIL report assumes that the international scenario will be as follows: The annual percentage change in real terms could be 5,2% in the worls for 2021 and 4,2% in 2022. Advanced Economies might have 3,9% in the next year and 2,9% in 2022. Emerging and developing Economies will have a change from 6,1% in 2021 to 5,1% in 2022.

According to the International Monetary Fund, the decrease of World GDP due to the pandemic in 2020 can be estimated at 4.4%, with a more severe contraction in advanced economies than in developing countries. Growth is expected to resume in 2021 and 2022, but uncertainties regarding the evolution of the pandemic remain high, and downside risks remain significant. For the year 2021 growth of furniture consumption above the depressed levels of 2020 is expected worldwide. Among large markets (over US$ 5 billion of furniture consumption) the countries expected to have a greater rebound in furniture consumption growth are China and India.

Stable sales and earnings growth at half-year

The Egger Group closed the first half of its 2020/2021 financial year (reporting date 31 October 2020) with consolidated sales of EUR 1.45 billion (-2.1 % as compared to the previous year).

The Egger Group was able to absorb the economic impact of the global coronavirus pandemic in the past six months and take advantage of catch-up effects. The positive industry environment from June onwards and thus a very high demand, favourable raw material costs as well as fixed cost reductions, which were taken as part of the measures against the coronavirus pandemic, led to a significant increase in earnings to EUR 293.9 million (+33.5%). The EBITDA margin is 20.3%. The shareholder’s equity ratio remains at the high level of 38.6% despite major investments in recent years.

The conclusion of this extensive investment programme is the 20th production site in Lexington, North Carolina, USA, which started operations in September 2020. This first non-European greenfield investment will enable Egger to serve the growing demand for wood-based materials in the North American market in future as a local producer and reliable local partner.

Despite continuing uncertainties due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the outlook for the second half of the 2020/2021 financial year is positive overall. Egger Group Management expects stable development in the key markets and emphasises that the company is very well positioned for further development with its modern industrial base, global market presence, broad product range, solid financial base and, last but not least, its approximately 10,100 motivated and loyal employees, even if new challenges arise.

Cooperates with Likora in the future

Two more players that want to work the market together in the future: Lamigraf and Likora have just signed a cooperation agreement. Lamigraf was founded in 1976 and operates as an international printing group with production centers in Spain, Germany and Brazil. The German Likora GmbH was established in 1983 and is a company specializing in the production of finish foils and similar products for the furniture industry. Common to both manufacturers is the focus on trendy and high quality solutions in the finish foil sector. With this cooperation, the two medium-sized and autonomously operating family-owned companies want to offer the furniture industry an even better service, further increase quality, and work more flexibly and even more reliably.

As part of an increasingly competitive industry, both suppliers have recognized the need to accelerate development and innovation in the search for new for furniture finishes in order to remain at the forefront of the competition in the long terrm.

Moves into new offices in Shanghai

Välinge Innovation China moved earlier in December into new offices in Jing’an District in Shanghai. This move was triggered by the increased organization in China in support of the growing number of licensees and the addition of a showroom for the upcoming launch of Välinge Flooring in Asia.

“We are proud of and well-known for the extensive support that we offer our partners, our licensees and their customers to decrease their time to market and bring them turnkey solutions related to floor and wall locking systems, material saving technologies, click furniture technologies as well as surface technologies. China and the Asia region has for a long time been important for Välinge Innovation and with current travel restrictions, strengthening our local presence is a key strategy. Our commitment to the region and the support we can offer our partners and licensees will continue to be of prime importance going forward”, says Magnus Holgesson Vice Regional Manager China/Asia.

Established in China since 2007, Välinge is actively supporting more than 200 licensees in China and in the APAC region. Adding to the Support Center established in Kunshan in December 2019, this larger office will serve as the support platform for technology sales and support as well as a showroom and regional headquarter for the sales and distribution of Välinge Flooring products.
