Not a presence trade fair, but a “virtual.drupa”

After close consultation with exhibitors and partners, the world’s leading trade fair for printing technologies “Drupa” has had to be cancelled for 2021 due to the effects of the corona pandemic. The next event will take place from May 28 to June 7, 2024, as scheduled. Until then, the organizers are bridging the time window with “virtual.drupa”, a four-day digital event. The date of “virtual.drupa” falls within the period originally planned for “Drupa”: April 20 to 23, 2021.

“The pandemic has caused great uncertainty among exhibitors and visitors with regard to participation in ‘Drupa’ 2021. Travel restrictions and budget pressure have increasingly aggravated the situation in the print industry,” explains Erhard Wienkamp, COO of Messe Düsseldorf. “We have made this decision together with our partners who support this step. This was preceded by a detailed process of weighing up the situation, taking into account the current framework conditions and the needs of the industry.

Sabine Geldermann, Project Director Print Technologies, adds: “Our primary goal remains to support the industry with all the means at our disposal to stay in contact with each other at national and international level, to further strengthen their network and generate leads. To this end, there will be an intermediary event from 20 to 23 April, which will give our exhibitors and visitors an additional sales channel and planning security”.

Claus Bolza-Schünemann, CEO of König und Bauer and drupa President, welcomes this approach: “A virtual event is exactly the right format in these times. Participating in “drupa” under the familiar parameters was simply too risky for many exhibitors against the backdrop of declining exports and sales, as well as considerable travel restrictions – even for visitors. The new digital forum, whose reliable pillar is a virtual platform, offers the opportunity to maintain the valuable exchange within the industry until 2024″.

The drupa preview platform launched in October has already given a preview of what “virtual.drupa” will look like: Companies will have the opportunity here to present themselves virtually and showcase their innovations; new contacts can be made and existing contacts maintained via matchmaking; the conference program of the five “drupa” hotspots will provide important impulses and, thanks to its agenda setting, ensure knowledge transfer online. International speakers from vertical markets will present successful brand stories on Future Technologies in the Cube, for example, and point the way to the future of the industry with their speeches.

“Our members tell us that there is still a great need for trade fairs that drive their business forward. The value and radiance of “Drupa” is unbroken. The decision to suspend it in 2021 is solely due to the pandemic situation,” emphasizes Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the VDMA’s Printing and Paper Technology Association. “In the long term, it is important for all of us to maintain “Drupa” as an international platform in Europe that reflects the industry in all its diversity. 200 years of expertise are rooted in Europe and must continue to exist. However, as an intermediate solution until 2024, we welcome the introduction of the new digital platform”.

The print industry continues to stand clearly behind its world-leading trade show, whose top international reach is unbroken. As a platform that calls for an open and competitive market comparison, it is a driver for innovations, from which exhibitors and visitors alike benefit. Through direct contact, technology trends and innovations can be experienced and compared and new synergies discovered. Its impetus, sales strength, unique atmosphere, comprehensive industry exchange and intensive network maintenance are aspects that can only be depicted to a limited extent via online formats. With “virtual.drupa” and the annual “Print & Digital Convention” in Düsseldorf, which is held in cooperation with the Fachverband Medienproduktion e.V. (fmp), the trade show is therefore aiming to meet this demand until it returns in 2024 as a presence format with new, valuable parameters and hybrid offerings.

Wienkamp concludes: “Today’s decision to cancel “Drupa” 2021 and offer a different format is an event- and industry-specific decision. For all other Messe Düsseldorf events, we are in close contact with the authorities and partners of the respective trade fairs, with whom we will assess the situation in good time and make responsible decisions”.

Has given itself a new form of society

The parent company of the Häfele Group has been operating as a new corporate form since 1 December 2020. Häfele Germany is now operating under the name Häfele SE & Co KG. “With the legal form of a “Societas Europaea” (SE), we are making Häfele at the Nagold location fit for the future as an internationally active family business with foresight,” says company manager Sibylle Thierer.

Numerous large German family-owned companies have already implemented this change to a “European corporate form” or are planning to do so accordingly. Background: the shareholders gain more flexibility for the future management of their companies and at the same time, while retaining an additional limited partnership, create more alternatives for involving the family.

Häfele is thus laying the foundation stone for the fourth generation to assume responsibility and at the same time making a commitment to future independence as a family business. “We want to remain an attractive and modern employer for our employees and international managers with lean decision-making structures for fast action in the future. With the continued existence of the partnership, we are also ensuring continuity and creating trust with our customers and suppliers,” says Sibylle Thierer.

In the company’s 97-year history, Sibylle Thierer is only the fourth female managing director at the helm of Häfele and she will head Häfele SE & Co. KG as Managing Director. Sibylle Thierer attaches particular importance to the change in the company’s legal form, which will have no effect on the daily work of the employees.

There have been several changes to the legal form in Häfele’s almost one hundred year history. Häfele was founded as a sole proprietorship by Adolf Häfele on December 1, 1923. In 1949, the second generation took over the company as a general partnership (OHG) with Walther Thierer at the helm. Due to its strong growth, the company was converted into a KG (limited partnership) in 1972 and 20 years later, in 1992, into a GmbH & Co KG. Sibylle Thierer has been managing the company in the third generation since 2004.

The Corona Crisis and its Effects on the Workplace

The Corona crisis brought about major changes for many companies and their employees: from one day to the next, the workforce was able to work from home, video conferences replaced business trips and internal meetings were replaced by virtual meetings. Tarkett, an international manufacturer of sustainable flooring solutions, has incorporated these changes into its ongoing “Rethinking Workplace” study and in June of this year specifically asked office workers worldwide about their experiences during the pandemic. The results are now available and refute the assumption that employees would prefer to work from home: According to the study, over 87 percent of those surveyed believe that they are more productive in the office than in the home office.

The large-scale “Rethinking Workplace” study was launched in 2018, and a total of around 9,000 office employees worldwide have now been surveyed. In the latest part of the study, which this year focused on the pandemic, a total of 2,800 participants from 14 countries, including Germany, took part and reported, among other things, on their experiences and perceptions in the home office. The research, which is unique in the flooring industry, is currently investigating whether and how the workplace can and must adapt to the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic. And the results of the first round speak a clear language: 87 percent of the European and even 90 percent of the respondents from Australia, China and the USA believe that they work more efficiently in the office than at home. The initial euphoria in the home office was soon followed by the realization that there is a lack of exchange with colleagues and personal collaboration.

“What is needed are offices that enable teamwork and take into account different ways of working despite the limitations. Flexibility is one of the very important keywords here,” sums up Anette Timmer, EMEA Marketing Director Carpets/Workplace at Tarkett. “The results also show that good indoor air quality is one of the key concerns. As developers and designers of floor coverings, we can make our contribution to sustainable work areas in this respect alone and have already done so in the past – among other things with three “Desso AirMaster” innovations, which promote a healthy workplace with fine dust binding, low VOC emissions and a Cradle to Cradle certificate in gold”.

Invites you to a virtual tour through the laboratories on December 10

On-site appointments have become a “scarce commodity” in times of the Corona pandemic. The Italian examination specialists at Catas have made a virtue out of necessity – and invite you on December 10 to a virtual discovery tour through the laboratories in Giovanni al Natisone (Udine, Italy) and Lissone (Monza Brianza, Italy). So that interested parties from the woodworking industry will still have the opportunity to experience the equipment of the workplaces and of course test chambers and, above all, to get in contact with technicians and employees at Catas, at least via the Internet, to ask live questions and chat.

“We are used to receiving visitors in our laboratories on a regular basis”, explains Managing Director Dr. Andrea Giavon. “Company employees and other groups come to Catas from all over the world, as do customers and business partners. And normally, everyone can get information about our range of services directly at our premises. For quite some time – hopefully not too much longer – this will not be possible. That is why we have started to think about opening the doors of Catas ‘online’, with pictures and dialogues in English. And at the same time underline how well equipped we are. The title of the event, ‘Testing the experience’, was also a conscious choice: It obliges us to communicate the latest state of the art in terms of standards, certifications, test methods for the many areas in which we are active.

The event starts at 10 am CEST. Franco Bulian, Deputy Director of the Testing Institute, will guide all online visitors through the event. To participate free of charge, registration is required at the following link: https://catas.com/it-IT/news/catas-testing-the-experience

Furniture fair will take place from September 5th to 10th with “Eurocucina”, “Euroluce” and bathroom fair

The Milan “Salone” will definitely be postponed and will be held from September 5 to 10, including the “Eurocucina”, “Euroluce” and Bathroom Furnishings. This means that the 60th edition of the world’s largest furniture fair will for the first time unite all product categories and will also take place in autumn instead of spring for the first time. Shortly before the German kitchen mile in OWL (18.-24.9.2021) and “M.O.W.” (19.-23.9.2021) as well as the “Ligna” (27.09.-01-10.), which has also been postponed, the timing will be a challenge for everyone involved in this country.

Previously there had been lengthy and far-reaching discussions between the management of the “Salone del Mobile” and Fiera Milano. The postponement of the dates of the “Salone del Mobile” is not only a question of a new orientation in the calendar, but must ultimately also take into account the time required for assembly and dismantling in the halls. “Now we have achieved the best possible all-round solution,” the trade show writes in its press release.

"Holz-Handwerk"

From 2022 from Tuesday to Friday and now with new online offer

The European trade fair for machine technology and manufacturing requirements sets the course for the next event: With a new sequence of days from Tuesday to Friday it will take place from March 29 to April 1, 2022 – as usual in conjunction with “Fensterbau Frontale”. Exhibitor registration will begin in spring 2021, and in the meantime the trade fair’s online channels under the slogan “Holz-Handwerk connected” will provide contact points for all those interested in the sector to network and keep up to date with the latest trends and products. www.holz-handwerk.de/bridgingthegap offers an overview.

Will be moved from January to August

The “MEM Industrial” and the “Tecno Mueble Internacional”, originally planned for the end of January, will be held together for the first time from August 18 to 21, 2021. The venue is the “Expo Guadalajara” exhibition center. The partnership between “MEM Industrial” and “Tecno Mueble Internacional” was already agreed in February of this year, with the aim of combining the strengths of the two largest trade fairs for the wood industry in the country.

The “MEM Industrial” is Latin America’s leading trade fair for woodworking, furniture manufacturing and forestry. The “Tecno Mueble Internacional” is an important event for machines, raw materials and accessories for the furniture and woodworking industry, especially for the Guadalajara region. The region around Guadalajara is home to the most important furniture cluster in Mexico. Parallel to the two events, the “Expo Mueble Internacional”, the leading trade fair for furniture and interior design, is also held.

“The joint date of “MEM Industrial” and “Tecno Mueble Internacional” creates new synergies and offers great potential for the entire industry. It enables us to present the entire value-added chain of wood and furniture processing, from forestry, machinery and supplier products to focus topics such as Industry 4.0 and digitization, at a single venue,” emphasizes Christian Pfeiffer, Global Director “Ligna” & Woodworking at Deutsche Messe. “In addition, the postponement of the MEM Industrial in view of the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic gives the participating companies more time for their preparations and significantly greater planning security.

The venues of the new joint event, which is set to become the most important trade fair for the woodworking and furniture industry in Mexico and Latin America, alternate annually between the “Expo Guadalajara” and the “Centro Citibanamex” in Mexico City.

Customers make their plants fit for the future

Plant modernizations are becoming more important for wood-based panel producers worldwide. Eppingen-based machine and plant manufacturer Dieffenbacher is collaborating with customers on innovative modernization solutions that can help customers keep their plants competitive far into the future.

One recent example is the retrofitting of a steam preheater at Pfleiderer’s MDF plant in Baruth, Brandenburg, Germany. The companies’ collaboration led to Dieffenbacher “EVOsteam” technology. Installed directly at the press infeed, the EVOsteam preheats the mat by injecting steam. This reduces the time needed to heat the mat inside the press, accelerating production.

“EVOsteam” can also be used in particleboard plants. To boost its particleboard production in the province of Long An, Vina Eco Board Co. Ltd. of Vietnam is also equipping its line with the new Dieffenbacher steam preheater.

Vina Eco Board also commissioned Dieffenbacher to convert the forming station of the same line. By installing roller screens in both wind formers, spreading accuracy is improved, leading to better surface quality of the produced boards. Installation and commissioning of both modernization projects are scheduled for summer/fall 2021.

Another forming station conversion is underway for Pfleiderer at its Grajewo site in northeastern Poland, where it produces MDF and particleboard. To meet increased demands for particleboard surface quality, Pfleiderer worked with Dieffenbacher to develop a surface layer forming process that satisfies the highest quality requirements. The special feature: With a design adapted to the airflow, the new forming station accommodates shorter, space-saving wind formers. The project is scheduled to go into operation as early as next spring.

In addition to offering custom conversion packages, retrofits, component exchanges and plant extensions, Dieffenbacher develops custom solutions for performance optimization, the integration of modernization solutions into existing processes, and the automation of existing plants. Dieffenbacher also relocates plant components or complete plants for its customers and partners.
