Furniture eServices GmbH dissolved – No longer involved in Roomle

The Egger Group announces that Furniture eServices GmbH has been dissolved as of the end of December 2020. The two shareholders Egger (75 percent) and Roomle (25 percent) have taken this decision by mutual agreement. Egger’s nine percent shareholding in Roomle was also dissolved as a result, and the shares were bought back by the Roomle shareholders.

Furniture eServices GmbH was founded by Egger and Roomle on July 1, 2019, with the objective of distributing software solutions that enable end consumers to design furniture online and have it delivered and assembled by their local carpenter. A comprehensive furniture library was envisioned as the core of the service portfolio, to be produced and marketed by licensed partners.

Different assessments by both shareholders on the approach and orientation ultimately led to the decision to dissolve Furniture eServices GmbH and discontinue its activities. Regardless of this, Egger continues to focus on the creation of solutions that support retailers and processors in the change of consumer behavior.

Invested in virtual showroom

2020 will definitely go down in history as the “corona year”. And it is precisely this circumstance of the pandemic with lockdowns and contact restrictions that has presented the industry with completely new challenges to which it has been necessary to respond intelligently: How can customer contacts be maintained away from visits and trade fairs?

MB Maschinenbau, a company based in Herford, Germany, has addressed this issue in a very special way. As a specialist for brush grinding technology and customers all over the world, as well as a know-how of meanwhile 30 years on the market, the Westphalians wanted to bring their novelties closer to all interested parties also in this special situation. For example, the “Roba Fusion double-end tenoner”, which was launched on the market last year.

Right at the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic, Ronald Busch, founder and owner of MB Maschinenbau, made the decision to invest in multimedia capabilities for a virtual demonstration center. His main requirement for the special showroom was to be able to perform live grinding and milling demonstrations and communicate them to the customer in real time. To this end, nearly the entire range of machines – from grinding to structuring to milling solutions – was placed in a separate area of a new annex that will be completed in 2020.

30 high-resolution cameras, operated by a control center, show the presenter of the live broadcast, the presented machine in overview and in detail. This allows the customer to precisely assess the technology involved and authentically follow the processes and quality. And in the best case, even with parts that the potential user has sent in advance. Modern image processing and streaming services make it possible to ask questions and make suggestions in real time, thus creating a real trade show feeling.

This investment by MB Maschinenbau was well received and has already been used frequently. And it has subsequently proven its worth in yet another way: The technology can be used to rectify any problems following the delivery of machines. This is because the models installed at the customer’s site are connected remotely via the Internet to the MB Maschinenbau service department. This means that technical problems as well as operating and application issues can be discussed live directly from the virtual showroom. This is an option that hardly any other machine manufacturer offers in this form, and MB Maschinenbau customers are consistently enthusiastic about this service.

"Ifoy Award" 2021

14 companies are in the final round

The finalists for this year’s “Ifoy Award” (International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year) have been determined. In the ninth round of the competition, which is also known as the “Oscar of intralogistics”, the jury has selected 17 devices and solutions from 14 manufacturers from the field of 36 applicants to compete for the best intralogistics products and solutions of the year. “This year, the jury concentrated on a few top models in classic forklifts and warehouse technology, and focused very much on the warehouse of the not-so-distant future in the nominations. This is a clear statement of where the journey in intralogistics is heading; autonomization, technology, software and holistic solutions are more important than ever right now. The final will be highly exciting,” says Anita Würmser, chairwoman of the “Ifoy” jury.

The finalists include Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV), robots, special vehicles, software and complex warehouse solutions. The companies Arculus, Cargotec Engineering, Hai Robotics, Hänel, H+E Produktentwicklung, HHLA Sky, BMW subsidiary Idealworks, Interroll Group, Nimmsta, Oppidum Tic, Still, Synaos, Volume Lagersysteme and Waku Robotics all want to win a trophy.

All finalists will undergo the three-stage “Ifoy” audit at the international “Ifoy Test Days” from March 22 to 26 – for the first time in 2021 at the Messe Dortmund exhibition center. In the “Ifoy” Test, experts measure the key figures of the finalists in a standardized procedure. In the “Ifoy” Innovation Check, scientists assess the innovative value of the nominated products and solutions. The Innovation Check is conducted by specialists from the Dortmund Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), the Chair of Technical Logistics at the University of Dresden and the Chair of Materials Handling, Material Flow and Logistics (fml) at the Technical University of Munich. At the end of the “Ifoy Test Days”, jurors from Europe, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa will travel to the Ruhr area to inspect the nominated equipment and test it themselves.

The jury consists of trade journalists from leading logistics media from 21 countries. The criteria assessed include innovation value, technology, ergonomics and handling, safety, marketability, design and customer benefits, as well as cost-effectiveness and sustainability. Important to know: Finalists are not compared with each other in their respective categories, but with their competitive devices on the market. “Only those who outperform their direct competitors in terms of innovation have a chance of winning,” Würmser emphasizes.

The coveted trophies will be awarded on May 21 at the Hofburg in Vienna. In cooperation with Logistik.Kurier and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, the award ceremony will take place as part of the Austrian Hermes Verkehrs.Logistik.Preis gala. Several hundred international guests are expected in the tradition-steeped Great Ballroom of the Hofburg, including the top names in transport, logistics and intralogistics. Until then, the result will remain a secret – both for the finalists and for the public.

Under the motto “Ifoy meets Business”, B2B trade visitors from logistics will again be admitted on two days in 2021 as part of the “Ifoy Test Days” – on March 25 and 26. The Test Camp Intralogistics enables logistics decision-makers to take test drives, test equipment and hold intensive technical discussions with company representatives who have made it to the “Ifoy Award” finals with their equipment and solutions. In addition, nominated vehicles and solutions from previous years will also be presented.

Agree on Exclusive Patent Partnership for Advanced Digital Printing Technologies

I4F, a group of companies providing patents and technologies to the flooring industry, announced today that it has entered into a patent partnership with Hymmen GmbH Maschinen- und Anlagenbau, a leading international supplier of digital printing systems specializing in flooring. This new strategic partnership gives I4F exclusive licensing rights to all of Hymmen’s digital printing patents and technologies for flooring production. It includes Hymmen’s award-winning “Digital Lacquer Embossing” (DLE) technology. This is an important addition to I4F’s comprehensive digital printing portfolio, which already includes technologies from market leaders such as Classen, Kronospan and Benchwick.

Hymmen has established itself as a global leader in offering industrial digital printing technologies for flooring and won an “Interzum Red Dot Award in 2019 for its patented “DLE” technology. Hymmen claims to have supplied most of its digital printing lines to the flooring industry worldwide. More than 80 percent of digitally printed floors throughout the world are produced on Hymmen equipment, according to the company.

In addition to exclusive licensing rights, I4F intends to work closely with Hymmen to advance digital printing technology in the flooring industry and represent the Bielefeld-based machine builder in future patent protection matters. In the past, Hymmen has already protected its own strong position with regard to its patent rights (IP); as an example, the recent patent infringement proceedings against Barbaran SA at the Regional Court in Düsseldorf.

Digital printing will play an increasingly important role in the future of flooring manufacturing, as it allows unlimited flexibility in decor design and can be applied to a large number of different materials. It enables faster response to market needs and trends while reducing waste.

Commenting on the partnership, Dr. René Pankoke, Managing Partner & CEO of Hymmen, emphasizes, “I4F is the perfect fit for Hymmen as we share the same passion for innovation and continuous development within the global flooring industry. I4F is known as a technology leader in the flooring industry and will help us develop and further expand the digital printing market.”

John Riedfeld, CEO of I4F adds, “The ability to produce high quality digitally printed flooring has become strategically important in securing the future of our industry. We believe that Hymmen not only develops the most innovative technologies at the highest quality levels, but also holds an extremely strong position in terms of IP rights. The addition now to our patent cluster concept further strengthens our promise to our licensees to obtain the best and most innovative technologies in the world. They are backed by a robust patent protection infrastructure.”

Hybrid trade fair cancelled – Only as “Digital Day” on May 20.

The worldwide corona infection does not allow a hybrid “Domotex” as it was planned from May 18 to 20 in Hanover. Therefore, the leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings will be held this year for the first time on May 20 as “Domotex Digital Day.” This was announced by Deutsche Messe AG. Novel digital formats – the central element is a digital conference – will address the issues that concern the international floor coverings industry, promises “Domotex.”
“Trade fairs like ‘Domotex,’ which are characterized by great internationality on both the exhibitor and visitor sides, have a long planning lead time. Following the recent surge in global infectious disease, accompanied by renewed lockdowns, worldwide travel warnings and restrictions, and quarantine requirements, we have now had to make a decision. Unfortunately, for the first time in its 32-year history, we will not be able to hold ‘Domotex’ as a physical trade fair at the Hannover site in 2021,” said Dr. Andreas Gruchow, Member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Messe AG. “Even a hybrid ‘Domotex’ is not conceivable in the form and at the present time, as that would require a certain proportion of physical exhibitors and visitors, combined with travel from all parts of the world. We have therefore decided to hold ,Domotex’ as a purely digital event, in order to give our customers the necessary planning security from now on.”

And Sonia Wedell-Castellano, Global Director “Domotex” adds: “‘Domotex’ thrives on the live experience. The exhibited products must be experienced live on site in terms of their haptics. As long as the worldwide pandemic has us so firmly in its grip and a sufficient vaccination quota cannot be guaranteed worldwide, we cannot safely plan for the future with a physical event. Markets thrive on exchange. Our customers are urgently looking for participation formats so that they can in turn enter into dialog with their customers and present their products and topics despite contact restrictions. Our answer to this is the ‘Domotex Digital Day’. A conference format in which we will address current topics with top representatives of the industry on May 20, 2021 and provide participants with an interactive business platform. As part of the conference, exhibitors will be able to present their products and innovations and make direct contact with their customers. The specific opportunities for participation will be available in our store very soon.”

The Covid-19 pandemic is forcing trade show organizers to rethink. Numerous trade shows are currently taking place purely digitally to meet market participants’ desire for complementary digital offerings. With the “Domotex Digital Day”, Deutsche Messe is acknowledging the importance of the rapidly increasing online channels in the flooring industry as well. The digital event will therefore also focus on the topic of digitalization. But “Domotex” 2021 is to remain unique, a cautious “back” is planned: The next hybrid “Domotex” is scheduled for January 13-16, 2022, at the Hannover Exhibition Center.

First “Saturn Digital Printing Line” for decor paper commissioned in the pilot plant

In mid-December, the time had come in Westphalia: digital printing system manufacturer Hymmen from Bielefeld successfully installed the first “Saturn Digital Printing Line” in its technical center. It is now ready for production.

“Saturn” is an industrial digital printing line with water-based inks that can be integrated into customers’ existing production processes. It is a standard machine that offers high-tech components at an affordable price and guarantees efficient decentralized production at the desired quality level. According to Hymmen, it is “…a breakthrough in the production of digitally printed decor paper.” Hymmen worked closely with Ricoh for the development.

“Saturn” was designed to move the printing process closer to the end of the value chain. Unlike many other applications, the machine is designed to meet the actual needs of the production facility. With the required capacity, the system unlocks all the benefits of digital printing. Lower energy consumption, easier paper drying and higher reliability due to reduced complexity are the positive side effects.

Change in the management

Franco Bulian – born in Udine in 1960, married and father of two sons – is the new chief director of Catas, one of the most important European testing laboratories for the wood and furniture industry, which carries out more than 50,000 tests a year at its sites in San Giovanni al Natisone (Udine) and Lissone (Monza Brianza).

Bulian joined Catas’ chemical department in 1987 and a few years later took on the role of deputy director as well as marketing director. He is also a contract professor in the “Materials and Technologies of the Furniture Industry” course at the University of Trieste and the author of numerous books and technical publications.

His long commitment to Catas has made him an active part of the company’s overall activities and an important protagonist of its positive development.

“I am really proud to complete my journey in Catas with this new and prestigious challenge,” he commented. “I would like to thank the Board of Directors and the President Lucia Cristina Piu for their trust and I am sure that together with all the excellent people of Catas, their enthusiasm, passion and skills, we will be able to achieve new and ambitious goals, with the renewed aim of contributing to the improvement of the safety and performance of the products of this important industrial sector.”

Bulian thus takes the place of Andrea Giavon, who is leaving the Institute to enjoy a new phase in his life. Giavon received the thanks of the Board of Directors and all employees and staff of the Institute for the tremendous contribution he has made to the growth of Catas, where he joined at a very young age in 1984. To welcome Giavon, the staff and collaborators of Catas collected a sum of money that, at the request of the outgoing director, was donated to the Hospital of Santa Maria della Misericordia in Udine for “Covid-19” emergencies.
