Must be postponed due to official stop of entry

Actually, it should take place from Tuesday, May 26, 2020 to Friday, May 29, 2020 in the “Corporación de Ferias y Exposiciones S.A.” in the center of Bogotá – the “Interzum Bogotá”. However, Koelnmesse is now looking for a new date for this fair as well. The reason for this is the entry ban until 30 May inclusive, which the Colombian authorities have imposed with immediate effect due to the Corona pandemic. A date in the fourth quarter is planned, which will be announced in due course.

Donates 300,000 euros for hospitals

Standing together in a difficult phase: The Neolith group is participating in the fight against the Corona pandemic with a donation of 300,000 euros for three hospitals in Castellón, where the Spanish manufacturer of sintered stone has its headquarter. Neolith itself currently employs over 500 people in Almazora (Castellón).

“With this financial contribution, as well as a series of preventive measures implemented in the workshops and offices in compliance with the directives of the Ministry of Health, we wish to face this exceptional situation and fulfil our obligation to protect our employees, their families and the community in which we live and work,” says the internationally active company.

Market exploration in India

Five members of the Furniture Club (Germany) were on the road in India. In line with the vision of positioning itself with international customers as a “one-stop network for interior solutions with sustainable quality made in Germany”. And thanks to Hettich’s support, numerous appointments with top decision-makers from the Indian contract market were made. “I was particularly interested in the information on developments in the hotel sector. As in Europe, individuality plays an important role in India too. During these three days, we were able to find out in several conversations that we are willing to cooperate”, says Johannes Hegger, owner of GH Hotel Interior Group and member of the board of Furniture Club. In many cases, concrete hotel and apartment projects and specific enquiries have already been discussed. The companies involved are now faced with the question of what structure they want to use to establish themselves in India. Eric Seliger, Sales Manager of Halbmond Teppichwerke: “To overcome the high barriers to entry, the right partners are needed. The market environment is favourable and the interest in German quality products is high”. The trip also showed impressively what great potential can be exploited in a well-functioning network.

First continuous wood-based materials production plant in North Africa

In El Tarf, Algeria, the first continuous wood-based materials production plant in North Africa is being built. The Bigstar subsidiary Panneaux d’Algérie had commissioned Dieffenbacher to build the complete MDF plant. The installation work is currently entering the decisive phase. The first board is to be produced in August 2020.

The complete plant project includes all the trades from the woodyard and the “CPS+” continuous press to the short-cycle press for coating the finished boards. The plant concept is specially designed for smaller capacities. This shows that the “CPS+” is also suitable as an ideal entry-level system for newcomers to the wood-based panel market and, as an economical alternative, can easily replace older single or multi-daylight presses in existing plants with smaller capacities.

Guelai Mohamed Chiheb, CEO at Bigstar, is extremely satisfied with the project schedule: “The cooperation with Dieffenbacher has worked excellently right from the start. We have been confirmed 100 percent in our confidence in the company and especially in its employees”. Looking ahead to the next few months, he adds: “There is still a lot of work ahead of us, but we can’t wait to start production. With our new Dieffenbacher line, we will be able to offer our customers high-quality MDF panels at fair prices”.

Dieffenbacher’s concepts, which are precisely tailored to the needs of African wood-based material manufacturers, also impressed Ghamoud, also from Algeria, and the Egyptian Egypt Kuwait Holding subsidiary Nile Wood, among others. Ghamoud ordered a complete particleboard line from Dieffenbacher in October 2019. The project – similar to BIGSTAR/Panneaux d’Algérie – is being implemented together with the Chinese Dieffenbacher subsidiary Shanghai Wood-based Panel Machinery (SWPM). The order from Nile Wood dates back to 2018 and the complete MDF system will be supplied by Dieffenbacher headquarters in Eppingen. Nile Wood will use around 70 percent locally grown wood as raw material.

In order to overcome the shortage of wood in some regions of Africa, Dieffenbacher offers various solutions for using alternative raw materials in panel production. These include rice, millet and wheat straw, which would otherwise be largely burned in the fields. Processing them into material boards also makes a major contribution to environmental and climate protection. Jute and cotton stalks, palm fronds, bamboo and bagasse – a waste product of sugar cane – are other common substitutes for which Dieffenbacher provides its customers with plant concepts. In addition, the company also develops customized solutions for other fast-growing woods and annual plants.

Postponed to the second half of the year

The “Xylexpo” will be postponed and will not take place as planned from 26 to 29 May. The fair is to be made up for in the second half of the year, but an exact date has not yet been fixed. “We waited as long as we could, hoping that the situation would return to normal,” said Lorenzo Primultini, President of Acimall and the exhibition, at the end of the board meeting. “We hope that the effects of the coronavirus will be clearer by the end of May but unfortunately we cannot say when this emergency at a global level will be over and, above all, we cannot predict its impact on the industrial system and supply chains of the wood and furniture technology industry”.

"Euroshop 2020"

This is what the future of retail looks like

The world’s leading trade fair for the investment needs of retailers, the “Euroshop 2020”, came to a successful close after five days on February 20 in Düsseldorf: Around 2,300 exhibitors from 57 nations reported very good contacts and business deals. Lively post-fair business is also expected. 94,000 visitors informed themselves about products, trends and concepts for the trade and its partners.

At the pulse of the industry: “We are very pleased that ‘Euroshop’ has once again proved that it is the most important platform for the global retail scene in terms of trends, inspiration and networking. Our exhibitors deserve high praise for their loyalty. With their innovative strength they were once again the magnet for an entire industry,” says Erhard Wienkamp, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf, very satisfied with the course of ‘Euroshop 2020’.

The exhibitors praised above all the high level of internationality of the trade fair. Around 70 per cent of the audience came from abroad this year. Large delegations came from Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, for example. In total, with 142 countries on the visitor side, the number of nations represented increased once again compared to the previous event in 2017.

Investment in third digital printing machine

Interprint continues to strengthen its commitment in digital printing. As early as 2015, the Arnsberg-based company was the first décor printer in the world to include industrial digital printing in its product range with a single-pass inkjet system. The second digital printing machine went into operation in autumn 2019. Previous experience was used to develop the machine and optimise the corresponding inks and materials.

Interprint has been part of the Toppan Group since October – and the investment strategy in digital printing is already being continued: The third digital printing machine should be ready for operation in the first half of 2021. With the commissioning of the “Rotajet 225”, the entire bandwidth up to 225 cm printing width will then be available. Interprint is thus further expanding its worldwide technical leadership as a pioneer in digital printing.

“At the ‘Euroshop’ 2020, we have already presented and established our Customized Solutions to a completely new customer group: The Customized Industrial Digital Printing is meeting with great interest from the bank,” summarizes Holger Dzeia, Managing Director at Interprint. “It is the solution for everyone who is looking for individual solutions in smaller quantities – or for repeat lengths of up to five metres”.

Export to China causes problems

Regarding the effects of the corona virus on the German-Chinese furniture trade, Jan Kurth, Managing Director of the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM), explains: “German furniture exports to China already showed clear signs of slowing down last year. In 2019, exports to the Middle Kingdom fell by 16.5 percent to 281 million euros. However, this decline was due less to the coronavirus than to the slowdown in economic growth in China and the introduction of higher furniture import duties in the USA. The oversupply of furniture from Chinese production had a negative impact on demand for German and European furniture in China, but at the same time stimulated Chinese furniture exports to Europe. Accordingly, German furniture imports from China increased last year by 12.9 percent to 2.15 billion euros. The German foreign trade deficit in furniture trade with China thus rose to 1.87 billion euros.

Even though no official foreign trade figures are currently available for the current year, we expect a significant decline in the volume of German furniture exports to China in the first quarter of 2020, given the already visible negative effects of the corona virus on demand for furniture in China and on global supply chains. This is likely to affect not only German furniture exports but also imports of furniture, primary products and vendor parts. At the end of February the VDM conducted a member survey on the effects of the corona crisis on the German furniture industry. According to the initial results available, almost half of the companies surveyed (49%) are currently unable to deliver the goods they have already ordered to China. More than half of the respondents (58%) currently note a decline in incoming orders from China. On the import side, more than half of the companies (56%) state that they are affected by supply bottlenecks from China.

The current situation should therefore lead to a significant – at least temporary – decline in German furniture exports to China as well as a change in imports. If the slow start to furniture production in China means that German retailers are unable to purchase special offers, or at least delivery is significantly delayed, then large-scale and discount stores in particular will have to find other sources of supply. Whether this happens in Germany because of the pricing of the goods concerned, or whether it is spread over other European or international countries of origin, will certainly also depend on the reaction speed and delivery reliability of the alternative suppliers. One thing is certain: the year 2020 will again be a particularly challenging one for the furniture industry”.
