Robots help to fight coronavirus worldwide

Robots play an important role in fighting the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 around the globe. Disinfection robot UVD for example has been in high demand since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. Chinese hospitals have ordered more than 2,000 UVD robots by Danish manufacturer Blue Ocean Robotics. They started to destroy viruses in Wuhan, where the global pandemic began. The units operate in more than 40 countries – in Asia, Europe and the United States. UVD uses ultraviolet light (UV-C) to kill harmful microorganisms. The robot is the current holder of the IERA innovation award by IEEE and the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

“We are now helping solve one of the biggest problems of our time, preventing the spread of viruses and bacteria with a robot that saves lives,” says Claus Risager, CEO of Blue Ocean Robotics. “The immediate demand has increased a lot with the outbreak of COVID-19. Existing customers buy many more units than before, and many new customers are ordering the UVD robots to fight coronavirus and other harmful microorganisms.” This is an ongoing success story for the IERA award winning robot. Blue Ocean Robotics has seen a growth in sales of more than 400 percent annually over the last two years.

The Danish robot moves autonomously around patient rooms and operating theatres – covering all critical surfaces with the right amount of UV-C light in order to kill specific viruses and bacteria. The more light the robot exposes to a surface, the more harmful microorganisms are destroyed. In a typical patient room, 99.99 % of all viruses and bacteria are killed within 10 minutes.

“UVD is a supplementary device which assists the cleaning staff,” said Claus Risager. For safety reasons, it works on its own and automatically disengages the UV-C light if someone enters the room. The collaborative robot can be used in various enclosed spaces – not only in hospitals. The technology also works in environments such as office spaces, shopping malls, schools, airports and production facilities.

“Robots have a great potential of supporting us in the current severe corona pandemic,” said Dr Susanne Bieller, General Secretary of the International Federation of Robotics.
“They can support us in healthcare environments, but also in the development, testing and production of medicine, vaccines and other medical devices and auxiliaries. Disinfection tasks performed e.g. by UVD units or safe distribution of hospital material in quarantine zones – without personal contact – provided e.g. by Photoneo´s mobile robot Phollower, are just two of many examples.”

By now, medical robots represent a well-established service robot market with a considerable growth potential. Sales of medical robots increased by 50% to 5,100 units in 2018. This is according to the statistics published in World Robotics by IFR.

Is postponed to 20th – 22nd January, 2021

The inaugural edition of “Hanoi Wood” is originally expected to be held between 28th to 30th April, 2020. In light of the COVID-19 situation, the organisers have decided to postpone the exhibition to 20th – 22nd January, 2021 for the safety and well-being of exhibitors, sponsors, delegates, trade attendees and staffs.

As the growing uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation develops, the postponement of “Hanoi Wood” will help the industry’s movers and shakers; from top exhibitors to buyers to be given time to participate.

“Hanoi Wood” is the platform to network with industry peers and experts from across the various sectors of the wood and woodworking industry so as to help visitors gain insight on how best to penetrate the Vietnamese wood market.

Participants will also be able to bear witness to the latest industry innovations and gain valuable insight from technology experts and key decision-makers.

“Hanoi Wood” 2020 is jointly organised by Binh Duong Furniture Association (BIFA), Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association (VIFORES), and Panels & Furniture Group of wood magazines – all respected pillars of the timber and woodworking sector.

Biesse also sees positive incentives in the current situation

“First of all, the good news: the company is doing well so far, in many areas we are able to maintain our activities on a large scale – of course taking into account the instructions of the authorities”, explains Raphaël Prati, Corporate Marketing & Communications Director of the Biesse Group. “There was of course a great deal of uncertainty on the part of our customers, especially after the announcement on Saturday that non-relevant productions in Italy had to be shut down. However, we are in the happy position that this restriction only affects us in part. We had to shut down some of the lines. Others continue to run without any impairment because the machines that are created there are relevant for the basic supply. And this applies to the wood industry, but also to other industries in which we operate, such as plastics and glass. On some belts there are machines that run completely 24 hours, here there is a special permit. In addition, machines that have already been completed are still allowed to leave the plants and reach the customers largely according to plan,” the Italian marketing specialist sums up. “Overall, the situation here is still quite good. With the production facilities outside Italy, we are very well positioned and see ourselves in a position to meet the demand in the coming months. In addition, there is still a very lively day-to-day business. Of course, fewer new orders are currently coming in from some countries, but the service and supply of spare parts is going very well. And new orders are definitely coming in: In some countries people are preparing for a ‘new start’ or are not even affected by the Corona crisis and the corresponding measures as much as we are in Italy, Germany, France or Spain.”

Federico Broccoli, Sales Director of the Wood Division and Director of all the subsidiaries, also confirms: “We work in close collaboration with our 39 subsidiaries to ensure business continuity for our customers. We support them with spare parts and services, as well as with remote assistance and interventions at the customer’s site, in full compliance with local laws. Encouraged by the high order backlog, we are going through these weeks of emergency with confidence and above all with a sense of responsibility. Furthermore, the machines that continue to be produced by our production plants and the technology available in our centres in Italy, North America, Australia, Malaysia and India guarantee a supply that is more than sufficient to meet the needs of Biesse and Intermac customers throughout the world and to respond to their technological requirements during this period. Thanks to this strategic reserve, we can also face the current slowdown with confidence.

Raphaël Prati goes even further: “First of all, we hope that with the current corona lockdown in many countries, we are only talking about a few weeks. And not over a phase of several years as in the economic crisis after 2008. As soon as the locks are lifted again, most things should start up again. And in other areas, the current situation is certainly an opportunity. The path of digitization that has been taken is getting a real turbo boost. With the IOT platform ‘Sophia’, we have been offering many digital services for some time now, and interest has risen noticeably. Such a phase forces even skeptics to rethink. The online connection of a machine will be the norm, not the exception. Digital twins and start-ups will also be. In addition, we will be putting physical meetings to the test even more in the future. Because we are currently realizing how well we can communicate via digital channels and video conferencing. This should make collaboration with customers more efficient in the future, reduce travel times and increase output. Webinars will increase, and training courses will increasingly be conducted online. In this respect, we are learning our lessons from Corona at an early stage by sounding out the opportunities and setting the course in the company accordingly. We also see many things as encouragement that we are already on a very good path.”

Deadline Extended – register products until 24 April

The “International Woodworking Fair” has extended the deadline for the 2020 “Challengers Award”, to April 24.

“We have received calls from exhibitors requesting a deadline extension to submit ,Challengers Award’ entries,” says JP Roberts, IWF Director of Sales. “To accommodate ,IWF‘ exhibitors the judging panel has agreed to a compressed evaluation time, so that the deadline can now be extended from April 1st to April 24th.”

The “IWF Challengers Distinguished Achievement Awards” Competition for Technology and Innovation has become known throughout the world for recognizing outstanding companies who have distinguished themselves by developing innovative technology in products, services, or manufacturing techniques that will advance the industry. Time-saving, money-saving, and environmentally friendly products are among the traits of many successful “Challengers Award” entries.

A panel of 10 distinguished judges, all industry professionals representing a broad cross-section of the wood manufacturing sectors, review and analyze dozens of entries, which are narrowed down in a two-step process, resulting in a list of semi-finalists, which then yields 21 finalists.

These finalists will perform live demonstrations before the judges on the day before IWF 2020 opens. The judges then make their decisions, and winners receive their award the first morning of the show. The winners will remain on display in The Challengers Award Gallery for the duration of the show.

Entering the competition is free to “IWF” 2020 exhibitors. Winning entries will be named on the morning of Tuesday, August 25. Industry media will be there to cover the winning companies and announce these innovative products to the woodworking world. Spreading good vibes with Youtube film

One thing is extremely important in view of the corona virus that keeps not only Germany but many, many countries worldwide “on tenterhooks”: stick together and don’t lose your good mood. A cheerful greeting in the form of a film comes from the Spanish mechanical engineering company Barberán, based in Castelldefels near Barcelona. The film shows the various employees, some of whom are at their desks in the factory, but many of whom also signal from their home offices that they are present and “at work”.

Sales and earnings forecast for 2019 achieved

Surteco Group SE was able to achieve its sales and earnings forecast for the 2019 financial year after presenting preliminary figures. At 675.3 million euros, consolidated turnover was within the target corridor of 670 to 700 million euros.

The main reason for the decline in sales compared to the previous year (699.0 million Euros) was the sale of the North American impregnation business. The operating result (adjusted EBIT) of EUR 40.5 million was slightly above forecast. Due to restructuring provisions and other special effects totaling 19.4 million euros, the reported EBIT of 21.1 million euros in the reporting year was below the previous year’s figure of 32.2 million euros.

The individual segments showed different developments in 2019. While by far the largest segment, “Decoratives”, was slightly below the previous year in terms of sales revenues, as forecast, the “Profiles” segment was able to increase sales revenues more significantly than forecast. The “Technicals” segment suffered on the one hand from weak demand for laminate flooring and on the other hand from the sale of the North American impregnation business and was therefore below forecast.

“Surteco has achieved the operating sales and earnings forecast for 2019. The sale of the North American impregnation business and the initiation of restructuring measures will further improve competitiveness in the medium term. We are in a very solid financial and balance sheet position to counteract the expected burdens from the dynamically developing corona crisis,” comments Wolfgang Moyses, CEO of Surteco Group SE, on the development.

Publication of the annual financial statements and the annual report for 2019 is scheduled for 30 April 2020.
