Official trade show evaluation of the 2022 event

A comprehensive retrospective, and then to take off in the direction of the next event in 2024: The organizers of the “IWF” in Atlanta have evaluated the past event. And released the results to coincide with the start of registration by preferred, long-time exhibitors for the upcoming show, August 6-9, 2024.

“IWF” organizers say the survey, conducted at random during show days, is representative of all buyers and exhibitors registered in 2022. The survey was designed, conducted and provided to the show organizers by Moore & Symons, a national research consulting firm based in Atlanta.

Exhibitors: According to the survey, 95 percent of exhibitors felt that “IWF” 2022 was attended by high-quality buyers who are important to the business of participating companies. Likewise, 95 percent of exhibitors therefore rated the show as “exceeded expectations” or “far exceeded expectations.” 94 percent stated that their investment in the event had paid off in the form of corresponding business deals. For 90 percent of exhibitors, the “IWF” in 2022 was characterized by outstanding purchasing power on the part of visitors. Another 90 percent were pleased with the large number of new customers. Even though trade fairs are nowadays less likely to be events at which spontaneous purchases are made, 89 percent said exactly that. Accordingly, there were noticeable sales of large orders concluded directly at the trade fair. 88 percent were satisfied with the public traffic on the stand. And 88 percent of exhibitors were confident during the show days in 2022 that they would return in 2024. Still, 72 percent see the “IWF” as a platform for business that would not have existed without the event.

Attendees: Attendees also swear by the Georgia event, with 96 percent considering the biennial “IWF” a must-attend show for the U.S. woodworking industry, and 90 percent saying it exceeded all of their expectations. And 85 percent of attendees consider the show the most important event in the U.S. for their company. Eighty percent visited the show halls with a firm intention to buy or said they were gathering information about a specific investment. Accordingly, the same number of visitors see “IWF” as the most important source of new woodworking technologies and woodworking products. 60 percent expected to make a purchase for products for which inspiration was sought at the show.

Appoint New UK Managing Director

Vollmer has now appointed Martyn Cross as the new Managing Director of the Vollmer UK subsidiary. Working alongside longstanding Managing Director, Peter Allen in the interim, Martyn has joined Vollmer UK to build upon the strong growth already overseen by Peter Allen over the last 24 years.

Since the end of 2012, Peter Allen has filled two roles as both Managing Director of Vollmer UK and President of Vollmer of America. With the recent construction of a new facility at Vollmer of America and the high demand for technologically advanced solutions in the UK as well as the USA, Canada and Mexico; Peter has made the conscious decision to fully focus his attention on the exceptional potential of the North American marketplace. With Martyn Cross joining the Vollmer UK team, and following a handover/transition period, the company will have a dedicated Managing Director with decades of expertise in the cutting tool manufacturing sector.

Martyn served a mechanical apprenticeship in the 1970s and has progressed his career from apprentice to applications engineer and on to positions as technical sales manager, production manager and subsequently director with many of the world’s leading tool and cutter grinding machine tool manufacturers. Such is the expertise of Martyn; he has also spent time working as an R&D manager at a prominent UK cutting tool manufacturer.

Commenting upon Martyn’s appointment, Joint Managing Director at Vollmer UK, Peter Allen says: “We are delighted to appoint an engineer, manager and leader of Martyn’s calibre. Martyn’s industry knowledge, insights and reputation precede him. The experience that Martyn will bring to Vollmer UK is second to none and his unfathomable relationships within the industry will certainly help to further enhance the position of Vollmer in the UK.”

“The Vollmer brand is growing exponentially with the launch of a completely new suite of machine tools launched at ,Grindinghub’ last year. Not only is Vollmer a full-line manufacturer of grinding, erosion and laser machine tools with a growing portfolio, but we have also introduced new brands and technologies to the group such as the ,Ultratec Ultrasonic’ deburring systems. To attentively support our customers in the UK and North America with the growing range of machine solutions, I have made the conscious decision after a lot of hard commitment to both subsidiaries, to gradually step away from the UK business and focus on the next chapter of my career with Vollmer of America.”

“After serving as the UK Managing Director for more than 18 years, there will be a transition period where I will be introducing Martyn to our internal and external teams and also our company structures. During this period, I will also be introducing Martyn to many of our prestigious UK customers. I have little doubt that Martyn will build upon the growth the Vollmer UK team is delivering and drive the company forward.”

The main objective is to build a community based on sharing knowledge, promoting alliances and supporting collaboration.

In ACAI are represented the most innovative companies in the fields of architecture, design and construction of interiors in Colombia. For this and many other reasons, Interprint became part of this network of companies.

Interprint’s goal is to share experiences and provide relevant content for members and partners, with different activities such as events, lectures, webinars and other collaborative activities to contribute our part in building the alliances.

12 years of close collaboration

Cleaf and Rotpunkt share a common design vision and a similar approach to implementing these ideas in industrial-style Italian and German furniture. Roberto Caspani, Managing Director of the Italian surface specialist and Andreas Wagner, Managing Partner of Rotpunkt Küchen, met to discuss aspects of the partnership between the two companies.

“The characteristics that define a Rotpunkt kitchen are sustainability and individuality,” explains Wagner. “Since 2017, our actions have been guided by the UN’s 17 global goals for sustainable development of the 2030 Agenda, the so-called Sustainable Development Goals. This decision has already produced many good ideas – including some technical innovations. For example, we can produce in batch size 1 at the Getmold site and thus significantly reduce material waste. All the panels we use, including those from Cleaf, are FSC® certified.

As far as customisation is concerned, we introduce new surfaces every year because we trust that materials can give a new look without changing the shape. After all, the height of our kitchens is 91 cm, not 80 cm. We think it’s more comfortable to do food preparation at that height,” says Wagner.

The German entrepreneur continues: “The collaboration with Cleaf came about in 2011 with the idea of giving our kitchens a new look. In these twelve years, our kitchens have also changed in some technical aspects. And the Cleaf surfaces in our range have increased significantly.

We want to be the first among the ‘Made in Germany’ kitchen manufacturers to make new proposals in terms of feel and look. When it comes to wood materials and laminates, I can say that Cleaf expresses an avant-garde level that is unmatched by anyone else. We are pleased to be able to meet with Cleaf’s R&D team to select the effects we find most interesting for our products,” says Wagner.

Roberto Caspani on the collaboration: “Rotpunkt’s industrial approach and innovation research immediately inspired us to work together back then. In these twelve years we have grown together step by step and got to know each other better and better.

I am very happy and proud of the path we have travelled together and of the ideas we have passed on to each other. Keeping our Italian identity while meeting the needs of the German market is a very interesting process that we can also push forward thanks to the partnership with Rotpunkt.”

“For the German market, September is the most important month. The exhibition format of the Küchenmeile, the week of open showrooms of the most important German kitchen manufacturers along the mile east of Hanover, is the most important moment for us to meet customers and present the new products to them. We will certainly also present some new Cleaf surfaces,” Andreas Wagner sums up.

“This year, the ‘Salone del Mobile’ and ‘Interzum’ fairs give us the right energy to present our latest research in the field of surfaces in the best possible way. We will introduce two more new textures, but I don’t want to give anything away yet,” says Caspani.

Streamlined management – without Bischoff and Rohner

With a management transformation, Ima Schelling Group, which was merged eight years ago, is entering a new phase that leaves previous thought patterns behind. In order to finalize the process and solidly unify the company, the decision was made to streamline management with short decision-making paths and a common direction.

Globally active and on a growth course, the Ima Schelling Group proves itself with its solutions for fully automated and interlinked plants in the furniture, wood-based materials and metal industries. Customers around the globe include major furniture and kitchen manufacturers, as well as corporations in the aircraft industry.

As a corporate group, success has transformed what were once separate, medium-sized operations into a united team with 1,850 employees. This united appearance is now a matter of course for Ima Schelling’s employees and customers and is now manifested all the more in the company’s changed top management.

Christoph Geiger and Maximilian Lehner, who were already members of the management, form the new executive board and continue to stand for the self-image as a united company. The executives formerly represented in the top management alongside the new managing directors are leaving the previous four-man management team. Wolfgang Rohner, co-owner and currently CEO, will move to the Supervisory Board at the end of the year. In this function, he will continue to support the new management in strategic matters.

Andreas Bischoff, previously CSO, is leaving the company on good terms and will take on a new challenge.

Ima Schelling Group will continue to support its customers in all markets and projects of the four service areas – Woodworking, Board, Precision and Consulting – with its usual competence and effectiveness. The shortened decision-making processes and the even stronger bundled orientation will further optimize the cooperation and process efficiency for staff and customers.

Invests more than $42 Million to increase production capabilities and capacity in Lexington

Wood-based materials manufacturer Egger Wood Products recently announced the start of production on a third lamination line at its Lexington, N.C. facility. The $21 million investment will expand the company’s thermally fused laminate (TFL) production capacity by 50%, increasing production to more than 155 million sq. ft. per year, and alleviate supply chain and logistical challenges for customers.

Egger’s Eurodekor TFL boards are produced on lamination lines by fusing resin-impregnated decorative paper directly onto both sides of the company’s Eurospan Particleboard substrate, which is also produced at the Lexington, N.C. plant. TFL is easy to process as a pre-fabricated, finished panel that requires only cutting and edge banding. It is also durable, scratch- and fade-resistant and hygienic, thanks to its nonporous surface.

Egger has also announced an additional $22 million investment to install a decorative paper impregnation line. This new line will supply locally-produced, resin-infused decorative papers to the lamination lines, allowing the company to have greater production flexibility to better meet the needs of its customers. Construction is expected to be completed this summer.

“Currently, we import impregnated papers from our manufacturing facility in St. Johann in Tyrol, Austria,” said Markus Frevert, Plant Manager for Production at Egger. “Ideally, the impregnated papers should be laminated within six months for optimal quality. Local impregnation will eliminate up to three months of shipping time, resulting in a longer lifespan for the papers, which will significantly reduce waste and costs, improve our service for special orders and shorten lead times.”

The new lamination and impregnation lines, representing a more than $42 million investment and 40 new jobs, will work in tandem to increase TFL production capacity while allowing Egger to better serve the needs of its customers in North America.

Finalizes purchase of Funder America

Genesis Products announced that it has completed the purchase of Funder America, Inc. The acquisition positions Genesis to meet the high demand for Thermally Fused Melamine (TFL) panels and broadens Genesis’ expertise as a leading supplier of laminated panels, components and panel processing. Funder America is one of the oldest, largest and most diversified TFL panel and component manufacturers in North America with 50 years of experience. Genesis currently serves kitchen cabinets, closets/shelving, RV, office and healthcare furniture markets.

“Adding TFL manufacturing to our capabilities solidifies our position as the most comprehensive supplier of laminated components and panels in North America. We are passionate about leveraging the breadth of our offering to better serve OEMs, distributors and retailers across the country,” said Jon Wenger, CEO of Genesis. Wenger added that the Funder locations in North Carolina, Florida and Arkansas “will greatly expand our national footprint.”

“As an independent TFL producer, Funder has the ability to work with any board or laminate to serve the constantly evolving needs of our joint customers. Our products and capabilities are naturally aligned to be stronger together,” said Peter Funder, who will continue to lead Funder as a division of Genesis after the acquisition.

Funder’s TFL panels and components feature decorative surfaces with enhanced visual appeal and excellent scratch and wear resistance. They are available in a variety of sizes, thicknesses, textures, and designs. In addition to TFL panels, Funder offerings available from Genesis include high- capacity shelving and panel processing; exclusive Kora paintable paper with the realistic look of hardwood and wood powder coating technology.

Focus Investment Banking (“Focus”) a national middle market M&A firm based in Washington DC acted as exclusive financial advisor to Funder. Said Curt Karges, Managing Director, “We are pleased to help bring these two leaders in their respective segments of the industry together to enhance both companies’ growth opportunities.”

2022 marked by sharp volume declines

After several successful years, the laminate flooring market saw cuts in 2022. Members of the European Producers of Laminate Flooring (EPLF) encountered difficulties, which was reflected in generally lower sales volumes in most regions. This resulted mainly from the global energy crisis due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine

Total EPLF sales in 2022 amounted to 367,169,430 m², a 24 percent decrease compared to 2021. Most regions were affected by this downward trend, with Latin America feeling the brunt of the sales decline at 11,175,159 sq m (down 51 percent compared to 2021). In contrast, sales in countries falling under the “other regions” category were largely stable, down 0.35 percent compared to the 3,527,908 sq m sold in 2021.

Sales in Western Europe were down minus 22 percent in 2022 (179,084,344 sq m sold). The vast majority of countries in the region were affected by the international upheavals. The countries that suffered most from the crisis in Western Europe were Belgium, down -34.7 percent and 6,019,139 m² sold; Finland, down 34.2 percent and 2,081,062 m² sold; and the Netherlands, down 33.5 percent and 14,158,495 m². The Eastern Europe region was hit even harder than its Western counterpart, with sales down minus 24 percent (107,745,587 sq m sold) compared to 2021. Macedonia (down 48.6 percent; 235,357 sq m sold), Kosovo (down 47 percent; 1,262,792 sq m sold) and, of course, Ukraine (down 55 percent; 3,798,536 sq m sold) suffered the most.

In North America, sales of 29,193,057 m² were only down by minus 2.4 percent. Meanwhile, the Canadian market suffered a drop in sales of minus 37 percent with 8,087,549 m² sold in 2022. The Latin American market again suffered the most, with sales volumes halving to 11,175,159 sq m sold (down 51 percent on 2021). The Chilean market was the most affected by this development (down 67 percent; 4,462,283 m²).

EPLF sales in Africa declined by -33% with 3,846,547 m² sold in 2022. Asia also saw a decline of minus 34 percent (21,504,454 sq m). The situation in Oceania is similar, with a decline of minus 16 percent (3,004,824 sqm).

Some countries again stood out from the rest of the markets. In Salvador (up 235.5 percent), Panama (up 226 percent), Brazil (up 117 percent) in Latin America, Cape Verde (up 655 percent) and Madagascar (up 23 percent) in Africa, and Iraq (up 131 percent), the Philippines (up 49 percent) and Malaysia (up 40 percent) in Asia, EPLF members managed to improve their sales figures.

Despite the supply difficulties and higher energy costs facing the market, EPLF members are confident that they will soon return to sales figures similar to those in 2021, when consumers’ eagerness to renovate during the pandemic led to significantly more laminate flooring being purchased. Meanwhile, members continue to innovate and offer consumers high-quality laminate flooring that is both sustainable and affordable with an eye on the future.
