Ninkaplast was recently named “Premier Supplier 2021” by the US office furniture company Steelcase for outstanding performance in engineering, quality, delivery performance and competitiveness. Only a few companies worldwide receive this exceptional distinction each year.

Steelcase, which is listed on the stock exchange, is one of the world’s largest suppliers of office furnishings and room solutions and has a global turnover of around 2.13 billion euros (2021) with 12,000 employees and over 800 specialist dealers. Ninka and Steelcase have had a business relationship for over 30 years. The focus of development is on high-quality armrest, seat and back components made of plastic and material composites.

Will be permanently moved to October and run in parallel with the automation fair “Bi-Mu”

When the trade fair calendar is completely shaken up anyway because of the Corona pandemic, this is an ideal starting point to put events to the test. That’s what the “Xylexpo” trade fair team has now done. And they are not only shaking up the tried and tested timing in May, which in principle alternates with “Ligna” and was always in the “Ligna”-free year, but also the bundling of thematic areas. This is why not only will a postponed “Xylexpo” be launched from 12 to 15 October 2022, but the whole thing will become a trade fair double with the 33rd “Bi-Mu”, a trade fair for machine tools, robotics and automation, additive manufacturing, digital and supporting technologies, running in parallel. The venue remains the “Fiera Milano-Rho” exhibition centre.

The closing of ranks between the two established trade fairs is made possible by a partnership agreement between the organising associations Ucimu-Sistemi per produrre – the association of Italian manufacturers of machine tools, robots and automation – and Acimall. According to the Italians, both trade fairs complement each other perfectly, especially with regard to the development with increasingly sustainable and efficient methods of producing in accordance with the principles of Industry 4.0.

In the past, both fairs have taken place every two years, which is to remain the case in the future. They will then run in October in every even year as independent, complementary industry platforms at the large exhibition centre in Milan. However, visitors can easily experience both fairs with their ticket.

The Italians are hoping for many synergies from this bundling: On the one hand, the circle of potential visitors is likely to expand, on the other hand, the traditional interested parties from the furniture industry can expect a significantly expanded spectrum with “a view beyond the end of one’s nose”. An accompanying programme with presentations, seminars and conferences on technical, technological and economic topics relevant to both sectors is also planned.

“This project is much more than the sum of two established and popular exhibitions,” says Barbara Colombo, president of Ucimu-Sistemi per produrre. “We believe that the merger of ‘Bi-Mu’ and ‘Xylexpo’ will help the industry represented in both fairs to show the best of their skills and potential. Under these conditions, we believe that the event will be a point of attraction for the global manufacturing industry, with strong radiance in Italy and abroad, to the benefit of all companies that choose to participate.”

According to Luigi De Vito, President of Acimall, “…an increasingly busy exhibition calendar, complicated by the relocation of many events due to the pandemic, but also by new technologies and ever-increasing international competition, requires a profound and accurate revision of the previous exhibition concept. It must no longer be ‘just’ a place where demand and supply meet. The cooperation between ‘Xylexpo’ and ‘Bi-Mu’ should develop into an innovative platform that focuses on high-end technology and profitable interactions. And ultimately a successful and eventful event that appeals to users, exhibitors, institutions and diverse stakeholders alike.”

Commenting on the concept of the new double show, Luca Palermo, Managing Director of Fiera Milano-Rho, said, “We are proud that ‘Bi-Mu’ and ‘Xylexpo’ – both outstanding events for Italy and the world in their respective sectors – have been on our show calendar for over fifty years. It is a testament to the quality of our site and the services offered by Fiera Milano. I believe that the decision to combine these fairs will bring further benefits to organisers and exhibitors. For our part, we are ready to examine all the details of the new project together.”

GO Lab relocates wood fiber insulation board plant from Germany to the United States East Coast

U.S. building products corporation GO Lab, Inc. is relocating a wood fiber insulation board plant from Berga, Germany to its production site in Madison, Maine. Once the equipment is up and running in 2022, GO Lab will become the first company to produce wood fiber insulation in North America.

German machine and plant manufacturer Dieffenbacher originally sold the relocated plant to Homatherm, later renamed Homanit Building Materials GmbH & Co. KG, in 2009. Dieffenbacher experts inspected the plant on GO Lab’s behalf in late 2018 and recommended the purchase. Once GO Lab agreed to buy the plant in April 2019, Dieffenbacher supported the company in financing the relocation and planning of its re-installation. Dieffenbacher will also modernize the plant and install new equipment, including a gluing system and dryer.

“Packed in more than 80 regular and oversized shipping containers, our plant arrived in Maine in late February,” said Dr. Joshua Henry, who founded GO Lab together with Matthew O’Malia in 2017. “This is a nationally and internationally notable event—the first wood fiber insulation manufacturing line in North America. The industry is looking at this hoping it’s going to be a model for the future,” Henry added.

“Our Madison facility is going to have three production lines. The Dieffenbacher line is the largest and most complex, beginning with the refining of the wood chips and continuing all the way to the production and packaging of the final product,” said Henry. “We’ve received great support from Dieffenbacher throughout the whole process—beginning with de-commissioning the facility in Germany, purchasing, financing and shipping the equipment and planning for the engineering required for the line’s revival in the U.S. If you are new to the market and planning a huge project like this, you need good engineering support. Dieffenbacher helped us really understand the equipment we were about to buy and the processes to get it up and running again.” “Moreover,” added O’Malia, “the financing was the most critical step. If Dieffenbacher had not stepped in, we wouldn’t have been able to ship the equipment and the whole project might have come to an early end.”

“The Dieffenbacher technology is great and is a sign of the company’s strength, but it’s their people that really impressed and inspired us,” Henry said. “Their engineering team showed a level of knowledge, dedication and thoroughness we haven’t seen from many other equipment manufacturers. Dieffenbacher has a lot of confidence in what they do. Their deep understanding of the equipment and the detailed support we’ve received was well worth the investment. Based on the last five years of dealing with many companies, I can honestly say that Dieffenbacher really stands out,” he noted.

“The idea to start production of wood fiber insulation in North America developed over time,” explained O’Malia. “As an architect, I consistently heard builders complaining about the itchy particles from mineral wool and fiberglass, and the bad air quality. Non-recyclable scraps of foam took up tremendous space in dumpsters, and plastic dust from cutting board insulation covered the ground and installers’ clothes during application. Additionally, I began thinking about why we were using insulating products heavily derived from petroleum to reduce the amount of fossil fuel required to operate the buildings. The reduced energy consumption is canceled out by these mainstream insulations and their high carbon footprints.”

“We found that wood fiber insulation would solve all these problems, but since it is such a light-weight product, significant freight costs made importing it from Europe unreasonably expensive,” said Henry. “In contrast, we figured that wood fiber insulation made in America—with much lower raw material and energy costs—would enable us to enter the market at a price point similar to other insulation options. We’ll be able to offer a high-performing, sustainable, comprehensive insulation product with a negative carbon footprint priced for mainstream adoption.”

“We started looking for the right production equipment and found it in Germany. The Dieffenbacher technology is exactly what we needed, and the support we got from Dieffenbacher will help us turn our idea into reality very soon,” O’Malia concluded.

Strengthens solid wood segment with additional management board member

Homag Group AG is stepping up the expansion of its solid wood segment and has now appointed Dr Daniel Schmitt as a member of the management board specifically responsible for this business. From the first of July 2021, Dr Daniel Schmitt will head the Solid Wood Processing business unit, with which Homag aims to establish itself as a leading technology partner for sustainable construction with solid wood.

In addition to the subsidiary Weinmann, Homag’s solid wood business also includes the two recently acquired Danish companies System TM and Kallesoe. The main suppliers are manufacturers of construction elements for sustainable wooden houses. In this fast-growing sector, Homag wants to significantly expand its market share from the current 10 per cent. In the current year, sales in the solid wood segment are expected to increase to well over 100 million euros.

CEO Ralf W. Dieter emphasises: “We want to become the leading system supplier for timber construction and develop the solid wood business into a second mainstay alongside our activities with the furniture industry. The strengthening of our management team shows how important this new area is to us.”

Gerhard Federer, chairman of the supervisory board of Homag Group AG: “The dynamics in the Homag Group are high and in order to sustainably manage the variety of strategic and operational issues, an expansion of the management board is necessary. In Dr. Daniel Schmitt, we have been able to gain a proven expert with great plant and technology expertise. He is an excellent team player and has proven that he can bundle strengths and expand new business areas.”

Dr Daniel Schmitt will lead the solid wood business together with the management teams of Weinmann, System TM and Kallesoe. In addition, he will assume responsibility for the CNC technology business unit and quality management on the board. The chemical engineer comes from Homag’s parent company Dürr. There, he has headed the environmental technology division Clean Technology Systems since 2017 and was responsible, among other things, for the acquisition and complex integration of the US company Megtec/Universal. Before that, he held various management positions at the Freudenberg Group in Weinheim for many years. Dr Daniel Schmitt explains: “The trend towards sustainability is leading to more and more buildings being made of wood. With the strong position of Weinmann and the recent acquisitions, Homag is well positioned to grow strongly in the solid wood sector. My goal is to showcase the strengths of the newly formed Solid Wood Processing division while maintaining the flexibility and customer proximity of the companies operating within it.”

Big plans in Latin America

Believing in Latin America´s potential, in the growth of its customers and in the creation of new markets, Schattdecor announced the acquisition of a new impregnation machine for the São José dos Pinhais unit in 2019. “PMI XIX ” began its operation in April 2021, with a production capacity of over 70 million square meters per year, with a nominal speed of 90m/min, complementing the Brazilian industrial park, which already had 3 impregnation channels.

In the second half of 2021, Schattdecor do Brasil will continue its strategic investment plan with the installation of a new resin reactor seeking self-sufficiency in producing resins and additives, totaling a capacity of 48 thousand tons/year. Later this year, we will receive the “PMI XXIII”, which will begin operating in the first few months of 2022. With the fifth channel (PMI XXIII), Schattdecor do Brasil’s impregnation capacity will jump to a level of 220 million m²/year of impregnated paper.

In printing, investments in energy and inventory are also planned since the Brazilian unit has 3 high-productivity printing lines and 1 lacquering machine for “finish-foil” production, which gives us a privileged situation of flexibility and capacity to serve customers from all over Latin America.

Transparent record figures in the environment of the world’s leading digital trade fair “Interzum @home”

möbelfertigung” has once again underlined its exceptional digital position in the competition between the relevant networks for the furniture supply industry. In the run-up to “Interzum @home”, which is important for the market, the portal www.moebelfertigung.com achieved record figures in April and recorded 60,401 visits and 112,489 page impressions.

As the only portal in the competition of relevant supplier networks, “möbelfertigung” has for years also been subject to online auditing by the IVW (Informationsgemeinschaft zur Feststellung und Verbreitung von Werbeträgern – Information Association for the Determination and Distribution of Advertising Media), so in the interest of its customers it also focuses on transparency here.

möbelfertigung” was the only publishing house worldwide to be represented with a contribution at the official press conference of “Interzum”. By curating the “Mattress Recycling Stage”, the industry network also underlined its position in terms of agenda setting for the international industry.

And the industry giant Häfele also relies on the know-how from Ferdinand Holzmann Verlag: At the “Häfele-Dicoveries”, the “möbelfertigung” team scored with the contribution “A journey through digital transformation”. This was one of only four Häfele contributions to be highlighted on the start page of the innovative platform. Verena Fink, Managing Partner of Woodpecker Finch, talks there with Tino Eggert, Editor-in-Chief & Project Manager of “möbelfertigung”, about artificial intelligence.

And because an innovative industry needs innovative products, you have been able to read our magazines completely online for years. All advertisers are linked directly to their company website or the relevant product.

Increasingly relies on the social media world

Sharpening specialist Vollmer is active on a range of social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. The Swabian machine manufacturer aims to promote and expand digital communication with its customers, partners and employees in a manner that is specific to each target group. True to the motto “digital first”, the company is strengthening its online marketing and sales channels, as well as its interactive recruiting. The combination of writing, sound and images available on social media is excellent for demonstrating how grinding and erosion machines are used and the services offered by the company. Vollmer also uses the platform to share its general expertise and technical explanations about sharpening with a global audience.

“We’ve been expanding our online marketing and sales channels in a targeted way for over ten years now,” says Jürgen Hauger, Managing Director at the Vollmer Group. “We not only want to use social media to engage with our customers and partners, but we also want to make our recruitment specific to the target groups to get young and experienced employees interested in Vollmer.”

LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube currently form the four pillars on which Vollmer has based its social media strategy. The opportunity to combine writing with sound and images allows the Biberach-based sharpening specialist to show its machines, services and the company in a detailed way which is tailored to the target group. In particular, the digital platforms allow writing and moving images to be used to showcase technology and the applications and benefits of the company’s sharpening machines based on the machining processes of grinding, eroding and laser machining. In addition, Vollmer seeks to use these platforms to explain in-depth content and general expertise in the field of sharpening technologies.

Back in 2011, Vollmer started its YouTube channel, uploading explainer videos about its grinding and erosion machines. The channel also has entertaining videos made by trainees, offering an informative and personal perspective of how the training at Vollmer works. Two years after launching its YouTube channel, the machine manufacturer began its “Vollmer Group” Facebook fan page, primarily intended for engaging young people with sharpening and working for Vollmer.

Vollmer has a presence on LinkedIn for Germany and its international subsidiaries in America, China, Great Britain, Spain and Japan. The company’s followers are given information about new technologies and services in specific categories, as well as being offered insights into the specifics of tool machining with sharpening machines. Vollmer also uses LinkedIn to share videos, images and articles, as well as to announce events, trade fair appearances and web seminars.

The company’s Instagram account became the latest addition to Vollmer ‘s social media platforms about a year ago. The focus of the machine manufacturer’s Instagram posts is training and education. For instance, interested young people can see informative and funny stories posted by Vollmer trainees going about their working day. This content is primarily conceived and made by the trainees themselves, showing a great deal of creativity and a keen eye for detail.

“The coronavirus pandemic has not only shown us, but the entire world, how crucial digital communication is for a company,” states Dr. Stefan Brand, CEO of the Vollmer Group. “And, although we currently have an excellent presence on social media, we’re continually working to expand our online communication so that’s it a cut above.”

Plant V in Saarlouis is opened

Even though the opening ceremony had to be rather small due to Corona, Nobilia’s Plant V in Saarlouis was officially opened today. All the important people were there: in addition to Dr. Lars Bopf as Chairman of the Nobilia Management Board, Minister President Tobias Hans, his deputy Anke Rehlinger and the Lord Mayor of Saarlouis, Peter Demmer. The symbolic start button was pressed by Nobilia owner Werner Stickling.

It took almost exactly two years since the ground-breaking ceremony for the large-scale project to be completed on a production area of 105,000 square metres. Industrialisation and the first test runs have been completed in the 600-metre-long and 250-metre-wide factory hall. To start with, there are 100 employees who get the assembly lines running with about 100 kitchens a day. And as usual for Nobilia, there is a lot of high-tech involved. In the final stage of expansion, around 1,000 employees are expected to complete over 1,600 commissions. The total cost of the plant is 200 million euros.

As is well known, the proximity to France, the most important foreign market, was decisive for the choice of location, and Plant V in the “Lisdorfer Berg” industrial estate offers perfect logistical conditions, as Dr. Bopf emphasised. The site as a whole covers 290,000 square metres and is thus expected to offer further potential for expansion.

Plant V is an important milestone for Nobilia to ensure further company growth, as was emphasised once again on the occasion of the opening today. In addition to the development abroad, this also includes the expansion of the product portfolio beyond kitchens to bathroom and living room furniture. At present, additional staff is being sought for Saarlouis, both for production and for the vehicle fleet installed here.

Based on the modular planning, the production volume is now being gradually ramped up. How quickly the number of commissions grows depends on the market and demand situation, explained Dr Bopf.
