From the machine vision sector, companies such as Asentics, Basler, Carl Zeiss, Euclid Labs, IDS, Inxpect, Isra Vision, MVTec, Visual Components, and VMT will be exhibiting in Munich. The sectors of sensor technology, control system technology and industrial communication, software and cloud computing, safety and security technology, positioning systems, drive technology, supply engineering as well as research and technology will also be wellrepresented by exhibitors such as Balluff, Beckhoff, Cenit, DLR, Euchner, Fraunhofer, Hiwin, Keyence, Leantechnik, Leoni, Maxon, Nabtesco, Neugart, Sick, Siemens, Sumitomo, Unimotion, and Wenglor Sensoric.

In addition to the established industry leaders mentioned above, numerous newcomers such as Agile Robots, Apera, ExoIQ, Franka Emika, fruitcore robotics, incubedIT, Isochronic, Kassow, Mech-Minds, Micropsi Industries, Neura Robotics, Robotiq, Rethink, robominds, Techman Robot, Wandelbots, Yuanda Robotics, or Xitaso will also use “Automatica” 2022 as an opportunity to present themselves.

For exhibitors and visitors alike, the event will have a focus on innovations and products related to the established trend topics of Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence and Man and Machine. This cluster has now been complemented by Sustainable Production, which is mainly motivated by the EU’s goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. This requires rapid changes in automation, which poses a major challenge for the entire industry. “Automatica” offers the perfect platform to present the diverse approaches towards this goal.

The familiar halls A4 to A6 and B4 to B6 have been allocated, but there will also be a novelty in 2022: Both “Analytica” (the world’s leading trade fair for laboratory technology, analysis and biotechnology) and “Ceramitec” (leading international trade fair for the ceramics industry) will be held simultaneously with “Automatica” 2022. Two additional industries, one great advantage: Significant overlaps enable participants to leverage synergies between the trade fairs.

And then there are additional highlights for “Automatica” participants. After its successful digital premiere in 2021, the AI and robotics platform “Munich_i” will take place as an in-person event this year, comprising the High-Tech Summit on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, a digital Robothon, and the “AI.Society” special show.

In addition, “Automatica” will once again hold the well-known “Automatica” Forum, complemented by hybrid elements. Furthermore, a Test Zone is planned where robotics and automation applications can be tried out on site. More highlights and novelties of the supporting program are also available online at https://automatica-munich.com/en/supporting-program/overview/.

Generally speaking, “Automatica” comes at the perfect point in time as the industry continues to grow. Frank Konrad, CEO of Hahn Automation GmbH, confirms: “Our industry is on the upswing: Due to the pandemic, companies have postponed investments in robotics and automation, and now have a huge backlog. At the same time, new business is boosted by the topics of climate neutrality and sustainable use of resources.” The VDMA Robotics and Automation Association, conceptual sponsor of “Automatica”, announced in a December 2021 press release that it expects strong industry growth of ten percent for the current year. The association expects the industry turnover to reach 14.7 billion euros in 2022, precisely matching the pre-crisis level of 2019.

China Aims for Global Leadership in Robotics with new 5-year Plan

The new 5-year plan for the robotics industry in China, released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in Beijing, focuses on promoting innovation – making China a global leader for robot technology and industrial advancement. The statistical department of the International Federation of Robotics reports about the domestic and foreign engagement on the world’s largest market.

“China is by far the biggest robot market in the world regarding annual sales and the operational stock,” says Milton Guerry, President of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). “IFR´s robot density statistics is a useful indicator of China´s dynamic developments, counting the number of industrial robots per 10,000 employees: China´s robot density in the manufacturing industry currently ranks 9th globally (246 units) – compared to 25th (49 units) just five years ago.”

The automation race in China today is mainly catered by foreign robot manufacturers with a combined market share of 73%. With some volatility in the past 8 years, this share has been constant. In 2020, installations of robots from abroad – mainly imported from Japan, Korea and Europe – grew strongly by 24% to 123,030 units. This number also includes units produced in China by non-Chinese suppliers. Chinese robot manufacturers mainly deliver to their domestic market, where they held a market share of 27% in 2020 with 45,347 units shipped.

“China released the second five-year development plan for the robotics industry – following 2016-2020,” says Song Xiaogang, Executive Director and Secretary-General of the China Robot Industry Alliance (CRIA). “The plan has great guiding significance for promoting the high-quality development of China’s robotics industry during the 14th period. Robots are the key equipment of modern industry. The new 5-year plan leads the digital development and intelligent upgrading in China and also helps to promote the global robot technology progress.”

The trends for 2022

At the end of 2021, the trend towards authenticity and naturalness continued, with a growing demand for a more authentic and sustainable lifestyle. The members of the European Producers of Laminate Flooring association have continued to invest in new solutions, offering laminate flooring that is able to withstand intensive use while being environmentally friendly.

Warm, natural, oaky colours for an exceptional realism
Authentic designs continue to be the most attractive amongst customers, with new designs borrowing the best from nature while preserving resources. Warm colours reminiscent of honey and fine wood with natural characteristics will trend in 2022. Natural beige and sand shades are also trending, as are light grey shades. Overall, customers demand tend towards more ‘Scandinavian’ and ‘Japandi’ designs that combine functionality with rustic minimalism to create a comfortable, natural, and protective home against the external challenges of everyday life.
Manufacturers have therefore created laminate flooring with different nuances to provide a particularly natural feel. New designs offer bright and accentuating warm colours, coupled with historically charming patterns. A combination of traditional mineral building materials and tiles in various formats.
In terms of feel, mat nicely structured surfaces are still the favoured trend in most European countries, with Herringbone and Chevron being the most in demand when it comes to patterns. Regarding format, while European countries prefer standard plank sizes, Nordic countries tend to prefer longer and wider planks. And while design is a key aspect of flooring, customers are now more than ever looking at the quality, functionality, and safety of their flooring.

Sustainability will fuel innovation
As we spend more and more time in our homes, using our living space for more varied activities, customers are looking for a flooring that is both practical and durable. Laminate flooring is no longer simply for the bedroom or living room. It is also increasingly found in kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms thanks to its sturdy features.
On top of moisture-proof flooring with impermeable top and bottom surfaces, new technology allows for a new and uniquely tight-fitting click system that facilitates the installation process, while also preventing water ingress. Providing customers with a floor ready to withstand the challenges of time.
Aside from new functional properties, our members are committed to a flooring that is both durable and sustainable. CO2 emissions can be considerably reduced thanks to regionally sourced products containing a lot of wood -a renewable raw material- and therefore guarantee both a high indoor air quality and an unbeatable lifecycle advantage. With growing demand for flooring that is both natural to the eye and to the planet, this will be our members’ main focus for 2022: to enhance their contribution to climate protection through eco-conscious production, sustainable processes and certified materials, all the while providing high-quality floorings that promote natural designs in line with nature.

The “MEM” Industry Advisory Board had met in mid-January with the aim of assessing the feasibility of the 26-28 January 2022 “MEM” in light of the increase in Covid-19 Omicron variant cases in different parts of the country and globally.

After consultation with Advisory Board members and partners, discussing the concerns of exhibitors and visitors, and taking into account the comments of international and government health organizations, it was decided to postpone “MEM Industrial” 2022, which was scheduled for the end of January. The event will now be held at the Citibanamex Center from 29 to 31 March 2022.

“For Hannover Fairs México, one of the leading companies in the organization of B2B events in Mexico, the safety of all our visitors, partners, exhibitors, suppliers and employees is a top priority,” said Azul Ogazon Gomez, Project Director, Hannover Fairs México. “Therefore, under the circumstances, postponing the event is the most responsible decision we can make to ensure the health of everyone involved in this event.”

In the coming days, Hannover Fairs Mexico officials will be contacting all parties involved to clarify any details resulting from the postponement of the event.

“We look forward to seeing you in March at ‘MEM Industrial’ 2022, hosting the event under optimal hygiene and security standards and continuing the economic reactivation of this important sector for the country,” added Ogazon.

Abu Dhabi plant produces OSB from palm fronds

On December 14, 2021, Al Talah Board from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, produced its first branded “Desert Board” on a new Dieffenbacher plant using recycled date palm tree waste to manufacture OSB boards. The innovative and highly sustainable plant will use about 15% of the 500,000 tonnes of palm waste generated yearly in the UAE to produce 120,000 m³ of high-quality OSB per year.

Al Talah Board contracted with Dieffenbacher in 2019 to create the unique OSB plant, which will help keep slow-to-biodegrade palm waste out of landfills and industrial composting pits. Dieffenbacher’s scope of supply included the strand production, drum dryer, screens and material recovery equipment, gluing system, forming station and forming line, CPS+ continuous press with press emission control system, the raw board handling and electrics and plant automation.

“Our Chairman Mr. Hatem Farah envisioned 18 years ago using our country’s abundance of palm trees to produce sustainable building products. The state-of-the-art technology and innovative plant concept were most important for us when we chose Dieffenbacher for our project,” said Mazen Dukmak, Business Development Manager at Al Talah Board. “We are the world’s first company to use recycled palm waste to produce premium quality OSB. We made this happen with the technical collaboration of Dieffenbacher, their production know-how, and because of their expertise in the field of alternative raw materials.”

Launches new grout imitating technology at “The International Surface Event” in Las Vegas

Tile and stone designs are becoming increasingly important for the SPC industry. It is for that reason that Unilin launches a new type of bevel for resilient floors that looks exactly like a grouted groove. This revolutionary bevel technology called “Unigrout” is almost indistinguishable from real grout. “Unigrout” provides the looks of real ceramics, with all the benefits of an SPC floor.

This patented technology is specifically designed to minimize the risk of visible gaps between two panels. Even when floor panels would expand or shrink due to changes in temperature, the specifically designed system will prevent visible gaps by using a telescopic ability of the innovative joint, wherein the upper edges maintain an overlapping geometry even when distanced due to shrinking.

Unilin Technologies will launch these innovations at “The International Surface event” in Las Vegas. 1-3 February 2022.

"Light + Building" 2022

Postponed to the beginning of October

The pandemic still has the world firmly in its grip. Messe Frankfurt has therefore decided to postpone “Light + Building” to the fall of 2022. The new date: “Light + Building Autumn Edition” will take place in Frankfurt am Main from October 2 to 6, 2022.

“We took our partners’ concerns very seriously and, of course, weighed up the business opportunities and risks. As announced in December, all options for a new date were put to the test. Fortunately, we succeeded in finding an attractive fall date and making it possible through internal rescheduling for Light + Building. This means that the prospect of a strong, international industry launch in Frankfurt in 2022 remains,” explains Wolfgang Marzin, Chairman and CEO of Messe Frankfurt.

In the discussions, significant parts of the industry reiterated the need for an international industry meeting point in Frankfurt before the end of this year. Daniel Hager, Chairman of the Electrical Installation Systems Association of the German Electrical and Digital Manufacturers’ Association (ZVEI), explained: “After the long break, the industry absolutely needs the new start in order to finally be able to present the many innovations in the future market ‘Sustainable Building’ – and to do so at the world’s most important platform of its kind, ‘Light + Building’. The new date from October 2 to 6, 2022, gives all participants sufficient planning time and enables personal exchange before the end of the year. We are already looking forward to seeing business customers and partners again and to a joint, successful autumn edition of ‘Light + Building 2022’ in Frankfurt.” This was also confirmed by Ingolf Jakobi, General Manager of the German Electrical and Electronic Trades Association (ZVEH): “Our industry is actively involved in the development of important future topics such as climate protection, digitalization, electrification and energy efficiency. In all these areas, there are a large number of innovations that we would like to present to our customers and introduce in personal discussions. It is therefore essential for the e-trades that the trade fair, as the most important industry platform, takes place this year.” Dr. Jürgen Waldorf, ZVEI Managing Director for Lighting, also agrees: “For the lighting industry, especially after the long break, it is important to exchange ideas in person and to meet at the most important German and international platform.”

For the “Light + Building Autumn Edition” the hybrid concept remains. In addition to the international industry meeting point in Frankfurt, participation is possible via the digital platform “Light + Building Digital Extension”. At the exhibition center from October 2 to 6, 2022, exhibitors will present an enormously wide range of products for integrated building planning. All power-carrying trades will be united here: from lighting and luminaire design, networked security and building automation to electrical installation systems, intelligent energy management and the providers of e-charging infrastructure.
