Following the Guangzhou government’s announcement that all trade fairs after March 11 will be suspended for the time being, organizers have postponed both the “China International Furniture Fair” in Guangzhou (“CIFF Guangzhou”) and the “China International Furniture Machinery & Furniture Raw Materials Fair” 2022 (“CIFM”/”Interzum Guangzhou”) to a later date.

The fairs were originally scheduled for March 18-21 and March 28-31 in Guangzhou. The new date will be announced in due course.

A new era of automation with artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have been a part of industrial production for years – at least in theory. The vehemence of how AI is now making its way into practice will become apparent at “Automatica”, which will be held in Munich from June 21 to 24, 2022.

It is beyond question that AI-based automation solutions will be the most important topic in coming years. Now the question is how quickly the immense potential of this technology can be used to the benefit of manufacturing companies. A survey by Longitude Research and Siemens provides some clear insight: According to the survey, more than half of business leaders expect that control of industrial plants, machinery, and critical infrastructure will be taken over by AI within the next five years.

However, the basic prerequisite for this is end-to-end digital connectivity of all components involved in the production process. Once this hurdle is overcome and autonomous exchange of data between all systems involved is ensured, the basis for smart production will have been created. “In a few years’ time, largescale digital networks will be implemented. This will enable all components to exchange data with one another, optimize themselves, and act intelligently” says Even though most facilities have not yet implemented comprehensive digital networking, nothing stands in the way of applying stand-alone AI solutions today.

Here, machine vision is paving the way for smart production processes. A quick trip into space shows how advanced imaging technology works. For example, ten satellites equipped with ABB multispectral imaging systems will orbit the earth and record the ecosystem of our planet starting in 2023. The system provides high-quality imagery with a resolution down to five meters. An AI-based analytics system provided by the satellite operator will assess changes across our globe – both natural and human-caused – in near real-time.

Now back to earth and into the “Automatica” exhibition halls. Here, exhibitors such as Asentics, Basler, Cognex, MVTec, IDS, ISRA Vision, Sick, and Stemmer Imaging will present groundbreaking cameras, sensors, and software with integrated AI. Imaging is a critical aspect of AI-based robotics applications, too. Vision systems have been the prerequisite for robot autonomy and flexibility for many years. If robots are to act intelligently, high-performance image processing will be one of the basic requirements.

Dr. Werner Kraus, Department Head Robotics and Assistance Systems at Fraunhofer IPA, sums up other robot characteristics required for the integration into smart production environments: “Image or force data forms the basis for AI-based robotic functions. However, most robots currently deployed are blind in their supplied state. In the future, the integration of cameras and force sensors must be already included in the scope of services for any standard robot to be deployed in smart factories. To enable truly autonomous actions, the virtual training environment is another crucial factor. Industrial robots need a digital twin to generate training data in simulations so that the actual robot can be productive right from the start.”

Last but not least, cycle time is always critical in robotics, meaning that low-latency real-time AI is required. Therefore, AI is moving from the cloud with extensive computing resources to the edge. This requires computing power in the robot controller to run and train AI models.

Young emerging companies such as Micropsi Industries and Robominds are developing visionary solutions to qualify standard robots for AI applications while keeping the effort to a minimum. These companies have made it their mission to make robots smart. Christian Fenk, CSO of Robominds, comments: “We believe that every robot deserves a brain. At ,Automatica’, we will show how robots can be upgraded for AI applications using high-performance controllers and machine vision systems, thus ‘tuning’ them to be particularly easy to operate. We are pursuing the ambitious goal of ushering in a new age of robotics by pioneering true artificial intelligence.”

The extent to which smart systems are already being deployed in standard components is, among others, demonstrated by manufacturers of gripping systems, including exhibitors such as Festo, IPR, Onrobot, Schunk, and Zimmer Group.

Such high-tech grippers – packed with all kinds of sensors and integrated software – enable reliable implementation of applications such as bin picking with comparatively little effort. Visiting professionals at “Automatica” can also take a closer look at exciting combinations of cobots and smart gripping systems in various demo applications.

In summary, the megatrends of digital networking and artificial intelligence are ushering in a new era of automation. They enable implementations of highly flexible intralogistics and production concepts that were previously not feasible. With the current pace of innovation, this year’s leading exhibition is probably going to be the most important “Automatica” ever – with a wider spectrum of exhibitors than ever before, ranging from startups to industry leaders.

Announce brand partnership, setting an industry benchmark in sustainability and transparency

Japan is World´s number one Robot Maker

Japan is the world´s number one industrial robot manufacturer – delivering 45% of the global supply. In recent years, the country’s robot suppliers have increased their production capacity considerably: Their export ratio rose to 78% in 2020, when 136,069 industrial robots were shipped. These are results published by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) ahead of the International Robot Exhibition (iREX) in Tokyo, March 9 to 12, 2022.

“Exports of Japanese industrial robots on average had a compound annual growth rate of 6% in the last five years”, says Milton Guerry, President of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).“At the same time, imports of robots have always been extremely low. In 2020, only 2% of Japanese installations were imported. The domestic Japanese robot market is the second largest in the world after China.”

36% of the Japanese exports of robotics and automation technology were destined for China. Like other international robot suppliers, Japanese manufacturers also serve the Chinese market directly from their factories in China. These factories on the world´s largest market for industrial robots proved to be a major advantage in 2020, when international supply chains were disrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Japanese suppliers were able to benefit comprehensively from the Chinese post-crisis boom that started in the second quarter of 2020 and gained momentum in the second half of the year.

With a market share of 22%, the United States is the other top market for Japanese exports of robotics and automation technology. Both countries – the US and China – are expected to further rebound from the Covid-19 pandemic. Together with the domestic market, the major export destinations will secure demand for Japanese robotics.

“Japan is a highly robotized country and a global frontrunner in the use of robots for everyday life”, says Dr Susanne Bieller, General Secretary of the International Federation of Robotics. “This year´s iREX exhibition in Tokyo will focus on ways towards a friendlier society, bridged by robots. iREX will display how robots are increasingly shaping our daily lives, e.g. by improving the quality and availability of the products we receive, the reduction of carbon emissions, health outcomes or care for elderly people.“

Excludes exhibitors from Russia and Belarus

Acquires remaining shares in Stadler Metalle

Ceratizit S.A. acquired the remaining 50 percent of shares in Stadler Metalle on March 1, making it the sole owner of the company, which specializes in trading in secondary raw materials and their processing. The use of secondary raw materials from recycling not only helps to secure the supply chain, it is also sustainable. ‘The recycling of used cemented carbide requires 75% less energy than the processing of ore. In addition, the detrimental effects on nature of intensive mining are avoided,’ Andreas Lackner adds.

The current Managing Director and founder of Stadler Metalle, Mrs Gabriele Stadler, will officially retire on 28 February together with her husband, Mr Hubert Stadler. ‘We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mrs Stadler and Mr Stadler. They have led and developed the company very successfully over the years, and helped to facilitate a smooth integration into the Ceratizit Group,’ says Executive Board Member Melissa Albeck.

The management of Stadler has been in the hands of Thomas Wenger since March 1, 2022. He has already been working in purchasing and sales at Stadler Metalle since 2010 and previously spent 10 years in strategic purchasing at two companies in the tungsten sector.

Both sides have agreed not to disclose the financial details of the transaction.

For the first time, Texprocess will also mark an outstanding development in the field of garment making and processing technologies with the Texprocess Fashion Technology Award. Submissions are now open online. The deadline for applications is March 25, 2022.

Entries are invited from exhibitors of Texprocess 2022, as well as companies, institutes, universities, polytechnics and individuals not represented at the fair. The rules: the developments submitted should be shortly before being launched onto the market or, if already available on the market, not have been so for more than two years. Additionally, they may not have been chosen for any other award.

Developments in the field of technical textiles will be honored with the Innovation Award at Techtextil 2022, which is taking place at the same time.

Currently, more than 1,000 international exhibitors have already registered for Techtextil and Texprocess 2022. In addition, numerous joint stand participants will complement the presentations. In total, registrations from 44 (Techtextil) and 27 countries (Texprocess) promise comprehensive international exchange with relevant top decision-makers and business partners. Homag and Heesemann agree to partnership

Now the two companies have agreed on an even more extensive cooperation. The scope of Homag’s product portfolio has grown considerably in recent years. For this reason, Homag has decided to discontinue in-house development and production of wide belt sanding machines.
