“International Global Kitchen Design Award” goes into the next round

From now until August 15, Leicht partners, architects and interior designers around the world are invited to submit their latest Leicht projects online via www.global-kitchen-design.com. After the competition returned in 2021 after a two-year hiatus, this year it’s once again “Who has the world’s most beautiful kitchen?” The search is on for innovative and inspiring kitchen designs that reflect the potential of lightweight design options, materials and functions in their implementation. New this year is that kitchen highlights will be published regularly on the Home¬page in the run-up to the final submission date. The award ceremony will take place on October 15, 2022 at the “Leicht | Welt” in Waldstetten.

The international “Global Kitchen Design” competition organized by kitchen manufacturer Leicht is unique in the kitchen industry. The kitchen projects submitted will compete directly against each other and will be judged on whether the planning and equipment are particularly convincing in terms of the high-quality, timelessly modern Leicht style. The evaluation of the projects goes through two phases: At the end of the application period in mid-August, votes can be cast for the participating kitchen designs. Afterwards, a jury of experts will select the winning project from the kitchens that have received the most votes online.

Every day, more than 1,000 kitchen planners around the world work with Leicht products. The inestimably large creative potential of these products gives rise to planning scenarios that are both clearly reduced and emotionally conceived in line with the brand identity. Leicht follows the conviction that extraordinary projects develop from an interface of quality and design aspirations, and that the “Global Kitchen Design Award” is exactly the right platform to promote them. “We are looking for partners who share this conviction with us and reinterpret it. The idea behind the award is to network the international kitchen world and to make inspiration for creative interior design ideas by and with Leicht accessible to trade partners and end customers,” says Stefan Waldenmaier, CEO of Leicht Küchen AG. In addition to providing a platform for voting, the website www.global-kitchen-design.com also presents particularly exciting projects from recent years that are suitable for a wide variety of room situations and serve as inspiration and a source of ideas.

Akzonobel CEO, Thierry Vanlancker, commented: “We continued to make good progress, with strong revenue growth in both paints and coatings in the first quarter. Through our vigorous pricing initiatives, we are in line with the unprecedented variable cost inflation that impacted our industry during the quarter. I’m very proud of our organization, and our first quarter results are proof of the ongoing hard work and commitment of all our employees.
Although uncertainties remain with regard to amongst others the sanctions on Russia, the COVID-19 resurgence in China and continued supply constraints – especially in North America – we remain confident in realizing our Grow & Deliver strategy.”

Outlook: Akzonobel targets to grow at or above its relevant markets, in line with the company’s Grow & Deliver strategy. Trends differ per region and segment, with raw material and other cost inflation (including freight) expected to gradually ease during the second half of 2022. Akzonobel aims to continue to offset raw material and other variable cost inflation (including freight) through pricing initiatives. Market uncertainties have increased due to the sanctions on Russia and the resurgence of COVID-19 in China, among others. Assuming there are no further significant market disruptions, Akzonobel aims to deliver the €2 billion adjusted EBITDA target for 2023, and an average annual 50 basis points increase in return on sales over the period 2021-2023. Akzonobel targets a leverage ratio of 1-2 times net debt/EBITDA and is committed to retaining a strong investment grade credit rating.

Online exhibition will end tomorrow

Since its launch on April 28, the “Wood Taiwan DigitalGo” 2022 has so far attracted more than 2,000 visitors. The online exhibition will end at 6 p.m. this coming Thursday on May 12. Please grasp the opportunity to actively participate in the various exciting online events.

According to the tracking data, visitors from more than 20 countries have visited the “Wood Taiwan” online exhibition and its peripheral activities, stimulating quite a lot of business opportunities. Launched on the first day was the Sourcing Taiwan, the one-on-one matchmaking served buyers looking for woodworking suppliers. Among them, Japanese Asahi Woodtec was highly appreciating the sourcing opportunity during the pandemic. More than 100 sessions have been achieved with five top buyer countries, including India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Poland, and Thailand.

Next on the stage is the “Wooddiscover Factory Tour”, which can be described as one of the most popular events in “Wood Taiwan DigitalGo”. From May 2nd onward, exhibitors have been bringing their products and production lines online for seven consecutive days and interacting directly with the viewers. The videos on demand for further viewing allow business opportunities to continue to ferment. Moreover, 6 leading exhibitors, namely Anderson Industrial, OAV, Innovator, Leadermac, Jun Shiau and Kuang Yung were interviewed in the webinar series launched in cooperation with “Manufacturers Win Podcast” for the first time. Through the interviews, the audience can better understand the latest trends in the woodworking machinery industry, including how the production processes have been made more ESG, more digitalized, more system-integrated, and so on. Aired on the last day of the exhibition will be the first episode of “Wood Insight”, to which Harry Urban, publisher of the “Woodworking Network” from the United States, will analyze the woodworking machinery market in North American.

Brilliant year 2021

The year 2021 was really positive for the producers of wood and furniture technology. This trend was reaffirmed by the Studies Office of Acimall, the association of Italian manufacturers of wood and furniture technology: production amounted to 2,530 million euro, up by 36.9 percent compared to 2020 and by 11.6 percent versus 2019.

Excellent results also for export, reaching 1,740 million euro (plus 30.8 percent over 2020; plus 10.1 percent over 2019), with a domestic market showing signs of liveliness (790 million euro, up by 52.5 percent over 2020 and 15.1 percent over 2019).

Import also increased, reaching 244 million euro, 59.4 percent more than 2020 and 21.4 percent more than 2019.

According to tradition, driven by the strong propensity to export of Italian companies, the trade balance was also positive, with a value of 1,496 million euro (plus 27.1 percent over 2020, plus 8.5 percent over 2019). Apparent consumption also increased: 1,034 million euro, up by 54.1 percent over 2020 and 16.5 percent over 2019.

“The 2021 numbers speak for themselves and show that the technology industry has come out of two difficult years and is back to pre-Corona pandemic levels,” said Dario Corbetta, director of Acimall. “The government incentives have certainly played an important role, but they have not fundamentally ‘changed’ the market trend: the growth we are seeing now is not only due to the incentives. After all, in a capital goods industry, these ultimately only lead to a concentration of investment decisions within a narrow time frame. Rather, we are seeing a significant market recovery that has brought companies back to their normal development patterns.”

“We would therefore like to reassure those who fear that the current trend is fundamentally ‘distorted’ by the incentives and that once this window of opportunity closes, we will be faced with stagnant demand,” Corbetta continued. “This assumption is supported by the economic figures for the first months of 2022, which clearly point to structural growth in our industry that will last.”

The consolidated figures for 2021 allow further conclusions to be drawn about Italian exports, which have increased compared with 2020 and 2019. Looking at the current situation, it can be seen that the Russia-Ukraine crisis has so far caused only a limited decline in Italian exports. Russia, Ukraine and Belarus together account for only a small portion of Italian exports, about five percent, and export flows to these countries appear to be continuing, albeit with a significant decline.

Many woodworking machines are not listed in the category of dual-use equipment that can be used to manufacture war materiel, so they are not subject to the current embargo, while all spare parts are subject to restrictions. Currently, despite some difficulties, banking operations have not been interrupted, and some Russian institutions continue to operate.

Looking at the figures for 2021, it is easy to establish a ranking of countries interested in wood and furniture technology “Made in Italy”, which is not surprising. The ranking confirms the stability of the regions where Italian products are highly appreciated.

The top position is taken by the United States (164.2 million euro, plus 13.9 percent over 2020), followed by France (118.2 million, plus 10.3 percent) and Poland (110.6 million euro, plus 34 percent). Germany is at number four in the list of “customer countries”, with an expenditure of 106.3 million euro on Italian machinery, up by 11 percent compared to 2020. Then come the United Kingdom (81.3 million, plus 56 percent), Spain (76.2 million, plus 62.3 percent), Russia (67.3 million, plus 102.4 percent) and China, placing orders in Italy for 60.1 million euro, the only country in the top-ten list with a negative trend by 19 percent.

The list is completed by Belgium (in ninth place with 56.6 million euros, up 18.4 percent) and Austria (54.5 million, up 36.6 percent) in tenth place.

In conclusion, all figures indicate that the positive trend will continue in the current fiscal year 2022, although supply chain disruptions and unforeseen events related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the development of the global Covid 19 pandemic could reshuffle the cards.

“We’re now looking forward to ‘Xylexpo’ next October,” sums up Dario Corbetta, “which will be a great opportunity to review the status quo of our industry and the evolution of international trade flows.”

Registrations meet expectations

“Once again, ‘Xylexpo’ is a reflection of the current market”, Dario Corbetta, director of the biennial international technology fair “Xylexpo” for the furniture and wood industry, is sure. The next edition is scheduled from October 12 to 15 at the “FieraMilano-Rho” exhibition center in Milan.

“It will be a good exhibition edition,” Corbetta continues. “A great comeback in the exhibition calendar after four years, due to the global pandemic. We believe the event will provide a comprehensive showcase of the industry’s best technologies.”

Based on near-daily feedback from exhibitors, indications are that the next edition could be a true “reboot,” buoyed by a strong enthusiasm and seemingly unaffected by the problems still facing the world – or so the show says. Six months before the official opening, that’s why halls 22 and 24, earmarked for the 2022 edition, are almost sold out.

So far, more than 220 exhibitors have registered for “Xylexpo”, occupying a total exhibition area of almost 34,000 square meters.

The show will thus be a comprehensive showcase where industry users can “experience” technology along the entire value chain: from primary processing to solid wood processing, from machines for wood-based materials to finishing, from tools to equipment of all kinds.

For the first time, “Xylexpo” will be held simultaneously with the 33rd “Bi-Mu”, a trade fair for machine tools, robotics and automation that also takes place every two years. This new symbiosis is intended to lead to a “Week of Mechanical Engineering” where exhibitors and visitors can meet to find expertise, solutions and ideas with a clear goal: to produce ever more sustainably and efficiently.

Record order intake in the first quarter of 2022

In the first quarter of 2022, the Homag Group was able to further improve its order intake, sales and earnings. The company was particularly successful in China and North America.

In the first three months of 2022, the Homag Group’s order intake increased by 30 percent to EUR 574 million (previous year: EUR 440 million), thus reaching a new quarterly record. Sales improved by 21 percent to EUR 367 million (previous year: EUR 303 million), while the order backlog reached a new record of EUR 1,213 million as March 31, 2022 (March 31, 2021: EUR 718 million). The HOMAG Group almost doubled its EBIT before extraordinary effects to EUR 26.8 million (previous year: EUR 13.5 million).

“Once again, we exceeded the previous year’s high order intake and achieved a new quarterly record,” emphasizes CEO Dr. Daniel Schmitt. “Our single machine business performed very well. We were particularly successful in the Chinese and North American markets.”

As of March 31, 2022, the company had 7,274 employees (December 31, 2021: 6,634). Roughly 120 employees joined the company for acquisition-related reasons. In addition, the Homag Group increased its workforce moderately as part of its growth strategy.

“A forecast for the rest of the year is not easy given the many economic and geopolitical uncertainties,” says Dr. Daniel Schmitt. “Nevertheless, we are confident that we can continue to improve sales and earnings in view of our high order backlog and the good first quarter, which testifies to customers’ high investment requirements. The high material prices and the recent pandemic-induced lockdowns in China are posing challenges, although we are able to address them successfully.”

Soprema commissions new wood fibre insulation board plant

With its special expertise Siempelkamp once again convinced a leading supplier of sustainable insulation materials: The Soprema Group ordered a second Siempelkamp plant for the production of its “Pavatex” wood-fibre insulation. The plant will be installed in Chavelot, France, near the current site in Golbey. Soprema is one of the world’s leading building products companies and has a strong focus on expanding its sustainable product range and resource-saving production.

Under the “Pavatex” brand, Soprema offers modern ecological insulation solutions based on renewable raw materials. Soprema commissioned the new Siempelkamp plant for its new “Pavatex 3” production site. Here, the waterproofing and insulation manufacturer invests in a new production center for “Pavatex” wood-fibre insulation boards in the field of sustainable building materials.

Soprema decided on a scope of supply for the new plant that is almost identical to that of the first Siempelkamp plant in Golbey. This first dry fibre production for “Pavatex” wood fibre insulation boards had been ordered by Soprema from Siempelkamp in 2012 and was started up in April 2013.

The current production line, which operates completely in the dry process, includes a ContiTherm calibration press. After screening, the wood chips are thermally and mechanically defibreed and dried in the approx. 120 m long flash dryer supplied by Siempelkamp’s subsidiary Büttner. Also included in the scope of supply are the engineering and installation. The Siempelkamp control system Prod-IQ.quality is also part of the plant concept.

The special highlights of both Siempelkamp plants for the production of “Pavatex” wood fibre insulation include the flexibly applicable gluing units. The fibres are glued only after drying. The “Pavatex” products manufactured meet the strict requirements of “Natureplus”, the quality label for ecological, health, environmental and function-compatible building products, and carry numerous other environmental labels. This corresponds with the corporate profile of the Soprema Group, which continues to expand its range of sustainable system solutions for the construction industry.

The assembly start of the new plant is scheduled for the last quarter of 2023. Its production spectrum is designed for approx. 55,000 t of insulation boards per year; added together, both Siempelkamp plants in Golbey will then provide an annual production volume of approx. 110,000 t of insulation boards.

Closes fiscal 2021 with record turnover

Successful year for Schattdecor: “Despite new challenges and the effects of the ongoing corona pandemic, we close 2021 with record turnover of more than 850 million euros. This means that in 2021 we have been able to record our best year to date with an increase in all our business areas,” according to the management of the surface specialist, which today has just under 3,000 employees at 17 locations worldwide. The increase in sales is also due to the continuously very high investments in technology, infrastructure and capacity, it said.

“Particularly in this globally ongoing exceptional situation, in which one crisis follows the next, we do not want to announce this result without the appropriate humility,” says CEO Roland Auer. “For us as a Group, this very positive development proves that together we have made the right decisions and set the right course for the future. We act directly in the interests of our customers and the requirements of the markets. For us as a global company, however, our actions and business activities also mean responsibility in view of current economic and political world events. Responsibility towards our employees, customers, suppliers and business partners.”

In the long term, the company continues to focus on solid, healthy growth: “The basis for this is the continuous review and adaptation of our product portfolio,” said Auer. With this in mind, the company acquired a 50 percent stake in the German foil manufacturer Fine Decor in the fall of 2021.

“Sustainability is one of the very big issues of our time,” explains Auer. “In Fine Decor, we have found a partner with whom we can already meet the demand for environmentally friendly furniture surfaces produced on the basis of recycled raw materials. Together, we will thus inspire our customers with modern surfaces.”

The finishing sector in particular is becoming increasingly popular and is also becoming more important in terms of sales. Impregnation and coating sites such as those in North America, Brazil, and also Italy and Poland have further extended their lead in this area. In 2021, a total of 830 million square meters of décor paper were finished (Impregnated and Finished Surfaces). In the printing sector (Printed Surfaces), Schattdecor reports a volume of almost 120,000 tons group-wide.

Roland Auer concludes: “The still young year 2022 is currently causing worry lines to deepen due to the war in Ukraine and the ongoing tense covid situation in China. We therefore refuse to make a forward forecast. What counts today more than ever are humanity, solidarity, responsibility and prudent action. The foundation we have built up over the past years serves us as a healthy and resilient foundation.”
