How to protect the forest

Ikea wants to use its size and reach to counteract global forest degradation and deforestation. This effort is flanked by the now-published “Forest Agenda” for 2030, which aims to help protect biodiversity, slow climate change and use wood even more intelligently. For example, the agenda includes the following goals:

– Make responsible forest management the norm worldwide, and beyond even Ikea’s own timber needs.
– Protect biodiversity, support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests throughout the wood supply chain, and start with a climate footprint that extends beyond our own.
– Drive innovation to use wood in smarter ways and store carbon for as long as possible by designing all products from the outset to be reused, refurbished, reproduced and ultimately recycled.
– Ensure that at least one-third of Ikea’s wood product range is made from recycled wood.
– Ensure that the sourcing of other critical raw materials that pose a deforestation risk does not contribute to the deforestation or conversion of natural ecosystems.
– Continue to use only wood from more sustainable sources certified by the world’s most credible third-party certification systems.

Yet pressure is mounting on the world’s forests and the ecosystems that surround them. Now is the time to introduce an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for future generations,” comments Jon Abrahamsson Ring, CEO, Inter Ikea Group.

In addition, Ikea also intends to continue to innovate and develop new ways to use wood smartly.

Last year, Inter Ikea Group announced that it would invest 200 million euros in accelerating its transformation to a climate-positive company. A significant portion of the money is to go toward reforestation, rehabilitation of damaged forests and better forestry practices to sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

Ikea
