A healthy, regular and conscious diet is often a challenge in everyday working life. Closed canteens, long distances, high workloads or uninviting premises as well as unsuitable workplace design are among the contributing factors. Can a workplace be designed to allow for enjoyable and relaxed or shared and communicative mealtimes? A question that Vario addresses to young designers from the disciplines of architecture and interior design as part of its Vario Design Competition this year.

Since 2018, Vario has initiated the architecture and interior design competition Vario Design Competition, which annually focuses on design approaches for the modern, sustainable working world – and presents innovative solutions. 2023 is the sixth time the office furniture manufacturer from Hesse is calling for entries to its unprecedented industry competition. Theme this year: “work and snack vs. snack and work”. Students and young graduates from graduation year 2022 are now invited to enter the competition. Individuals and teams alike can register their participation.

The aim of the competition, which is endowed with prize money totaling 6,000 euros, is once again to promote the next generation of architects and interior designers and pave the way for them to enter the industry. Taunus Sparkasse is also supporting this year’s edition of the competition with a special award of 1,000 euros. Deadline for submission of concepts and designs is June 21, 2023. The award ceremony will take place in September 2023.
The designs are then judged in two different processes: All submissions will be put to a public vote in a digital exhibition on the competition website vario.com/designcompetition and on instagram (instagram.com/variobuero-einrichtungen, #variodesigncompetition). A jury of experts will also judge the submitted designs according to the following competition criteria:

• Conceptual approach and idea
• Wit and poetry- Convincing performance
• Relevance for a sustainable, modern working world

The jury is free to distribute the prize money of 6,000 euros. In addition, the selected projects will be implemented together with the participants at the Vario workshop in Liederbach, Hesse, and presented to the public at an awards ceremony.
