Will be discontinued and replaced by other means of communication
The current Ikea catalog for the 2020/21 season will be the last one. As the Swedish company has just announced, the compendium will no longer be published after 70 years. Over the past decades, it has developed into a true classic and a key success factor for the company. Because it reaches many people around the world and has always inspired with affordable furnishing solutions as well as tips and ideas for a better home. However, in the meantime Ikea has become more digital and has found new ways to reach people, the press release says.
“For both our customers and our employees, the catalog is associated with countless great memories and emotions. For 70 years, it has been one of our best known and most popular products and has inspired billions of people worldwide. The decision to close the chapter “Ikea Catalog” is a consequence of changing media consumption and consumer behavior. In the future, we will reach the many people through new ways, interact with them and inspire them with our furnishing solutions,” says Konrad Grüss, Managing Director Inter Ikea Systems B.V.
The decision to discontinue the catalog was made in the course of the ongoing transformation, which will make Ikea more digital and more accessible. Last year, the Group’s online trade grew by 45 percent worldwide, and the website Ikea.com recorded more than four billion visitors. At the same time, the digital services division was expanded and new apps were developed to offer customers an even better experience – whenever and wherever they want it.
Ikea would like to duly appreciate and celebrate the great history of the catalog. A book with a wealth of furnishing knowledge and inspiration is scheduled for publication in fall 2021.
